Westlake and Woodlands are much closer competitively than Reagan and the Woodlands. I think its more of a battle for 2nd honestly.
-
-
Reagan is the clear winner, unless something drastically changing.
2/3 - Woodlands/Westlake. Westlake scored higher than woodlands in BOA SA prelims in 2018. Could potentially upset them at this contest. I saw a picture of Westlake rehearsing on social media and they are using the props from pride of Cincinnati 2019. Don't know much about Woodlands show, but seems a little traditional?
As for the others....I am uncertain. Oak Ridge, Cy Fair are all going through director changes. They would be my top picks for 4/5 but I am not sure. I predict SFA will have a stellar season. I also think college park will do some damage at this show.

Marian Catholic 2012 - My Brothers Keeper
A show about mans inhumanity to man. This show was haunting. It begins with narration from Holocaust survivor and author Ellie Weisel. There was a segment where they played the Aria from "music for prague" and had news clips from 9-11 playing in the background. You can even hear hitler and osama bin laden at one point. The closer features haunting narration from Dr. Martin Luther King.

I’m truly skeptical of anyone other than Carmel winning GN. I have my reasons for thinking that. I hope I’m wrong.
Carmel is losing a few key staff members....I could see any of the Texas crew beating them. For some reason it feels like Vandegrift is going to be the national champs to me.

Bands are bailing from Grand Nationals because there are so many Texas bands coming. Texas will likely have half of the finalists at Grand Nationals.
in 2018, if any of the finalists from BOA San Antonio would have went to Grand Nationals, they almost certainly would have made finals. Prosper made finals, and they weren't in BOA San Antonio finals. They weren't even the first group out.
I am almost certain that in 2020 we will see some major change to the format of Super Regionals and Grand Nationals. San Antonio is, in every way you look at it, a much more competitive contest at this point.

Glad you mentioned that. There are several Texas contests that could see a program win its first Regional Championship. Exciting times, people!!
Which other ones do you think?

Also did Carol Brittin Chambers arrange for Westlake last year?
Yes - Chambers arranged for Westlake starting in 2018.
Last year she arranged for 4 BOA San Antonio finalists! Quite the track record

Westlake (TX) - "Opportunity Knocks"
"Traveler"- David Maslanka
"Enjoy the Silence" - Depeche Mode/Eric Whitacre
"Break on Through" - The Doors
Original Music By Carol Britten Chambers
Typically known for classical and conservative shows - I am glad to see Westlake branching out into more modern show design. They have been a great band for a long time now - but show design was holding them back. Last year, "Myspherical" was a great step in that direction and it looks like they will continue with "Opportunity Knocks."

I can't remember the last time Leander wasn't top 3 at BOA Austin. I am not ready to say that's going to change just yet. Let me see some fall shows first.
2017 was the last time they weren't in the top 3.

LD BELL 2010 - Honor: We Will Remember
This show was a tribute to the armed forces, and is one of the most moving shows I have ever seen. As the show develops, the field is gradually covered in Crosses, similar to the Arlington national cemetery in Washington DC.
LD BELL 2011 - The Circles Edge
This was a completely different show than 2010, an is the last time that LD bell won the BOA SA Super Regional. This is one of the hardest marching band shows I have ever seen. I have no idea what the theme is really, but the Iconic red and black guard costumes are burned in my brain as one of the most effective I have ever seen. This show is true Wes Cartwright genius.
MARIAN CATHOLIC 2012 - My Brothers Keeper
This is probably the most emotional marching band show I have ever seen. Marian placed 5th at Grand Natonals that year, and many thought they would place even higher. There was one point in the show when you heard the voices of hitler, osama bin laden, and various new clips of tragedies all with the background music of Karel Husa's "music for Prague 1968". The show ended in a creative way, with no music and simply the voice of Martin Luther King Jr, as the band solemly and quietly formed a peace sign on the field. I was there at GN finals in 2012, and there wasn't a single dry eye in the house after Marian Catholic performed.
LEANDER 2015 - Choral Works
This show blew the doors off of what marching bands could do with electronics in my opinion. The very first time I saw it, the electronic sounds leading into the opening impact gave me chills. This is still my favorite Leander show - they really captured a special aesthetic with this one.

If we were to go off of 2018 BOA SA Prelims scores

1. CTJ

2. Vandegrift

3. Leander

4. Vista RIdge

5. Henrdrickson

6. Cedar Ridge

7. James Bowie

8. Cedar Park

9. Round Rock

10. Rouse

11. Lake Travis

12. Westwood

13. Pflugerville

Honestly - I think it could end up just like that!

CTJ Winning - likely as they have done the past 2 seasons

Vandy, Leander, Vista - could go any way with those 3. Given that Leander and Vandy are going to GN, ill give them the nod.

Rouse getting into finals for the first time - I think this might be the year!

I say Reagan and TWHS would be top contenders of the confirmed group - Vandy and Bowie usually attend this event - so you can not count them out
Vandegrift and Bowie are not attending in 2019

Here are my thoughts on this contest as of right now, not really knowing anything about anyones shows.
Reagan - Clear winner here.
Woodlands - Based on history I would say clear 2nd place. Could beat Reagan if they have a strong season. Could be possibly upset by Westlake/oakridge/seven lakes if they do not. That is pretty unlikely
Westlake/Lake Travis - Both of these Austin programs surged last year due to design changes and staff pick ups. From looking at their website, Westlake picked up a long time SCV staff member as an assistant band director prior to the 2018 season and it made a huge impact. I expect both programs to continue to surge in 2019.
Oak Ridge - I was SO impressed by this band earlier in the season last year. For some reason it didn't carry all the way through San Antonio. The design is top notch, and I am really excited about what they bring to the table in 2019.
Seven Lakes - Same Story as oak ridge - I was blown away at BOA Houston but didn't carry all the way to San Antonio. Another band with CRAZY good design. What an interesting theme last year.

If you rank these according to BOA SA Prelims from 2018:
1. Flower Mound
2. Hebron
3 Keller
4. Marcus
5. LD Bell
6. Prosper
7. Timber Creek
8. Coppell
9. Keller Central
10. James Martin
Waxahachie didn't attend BOA san Antonio last year - but they would definitely be in the mix!
-
Myspherical + 1
Testament - 1
-
And that’s not including finalists from the past year that did not go to SA, such as Brazoswood and CyFair.
Wow didn't even think of that.....This may be an even harder regional to make finals at than Austin! Not sure about brazoswood, but I definitely think Cy Fair will be a finalist.
-
If you were to rank based on BOA San Antonio Prelims Placements from 2018 -
1. Ronald Reagan
2. Westlake
3. The Woodlands
4. Oak Ridge
5. Churchill
6. College Park
7. Seven Lakes
8. Pearland
9. Lake Travis
10. Clear Brook
------------------------
11. James E. Taylor
12. Westwood
13. Klein Oak
14. Pflugerville
This regional is pretty stacked! That group from Oak Ridge down to Clear Brook all scored within 2.5 Points of each other at BOA SA! I would imagine we see mostly the same names in finals, with a few different placements.
-
Westlake will be attending BOA Houston and BOA San Antonio (heard this from a friend who is an alum)
-
-
Disappointed for Leander. 2 seems really low for us.
Between Westlake and CTJ thats almost half of the all-state spots for the entire 6A area. Looks like Hebron and Flo Mo cleaned up similarily in Dallas area.
-
In CTJs Area, which is one of the hardest in the state
CTJ - 16
Westlake - 12
Reagan - ? Anyone know?
Vista Ridge - 5
Cedar Park - 4
Vandegrift - 3
Leander - 2
-
Two things I noticed since the dust has settled -
Vista Ridge went from 16th place in 2017 to 4th in 2018
Westlake went from 31st in 2017 to 11th (prelims) in 2018
Those are some huge jumps in placement and should give some hope for bands that placed in that range this season!
