I would like to say thank you to the Klein Oak Band for staying and supporting TWHS Band last night after the game. Ya'll were great! -

They certainly could be. What I don't know is if they will regress a little due to losing about 1000 students to Grand Oaks. I have no idea how that would be reflected in the band program. -

As the board skews to Austin, San Antonio, and DFW, I'll pick this one up again before it drops off the first page.... The bands that I am interested in seeing (other than TWHS), and that I think are in the finals hunt are: Clear Brook, Del Rio, James Bowie, Stephen F Austin, Ronald Reagan, Friendswood, Brazoswood, Cy-Fair, Pearland, Seven Lakes, James E Taylor, College Park, Winston Churchill, Westfield, and Vandegrift. I am also curious about Oak Ridge - I don't know if the split with Grand Oaks has hurt them or not. Throw in TWHS, and those are 16 bands I think the finalists will most likely come from (only half the field...). I think the returning finalists from 2017 are likely to repeat: Clear Brook, James Bowie, Ronald Reagan, Cy-Fair, The Woodlands, Winston Churchill and Vandegrift. So 3 more spots. If I had to make my best guess, it would be Pearland, Seven Lakes, and James E Taylor. I think Brazoswood is very close and could get in over JET, I don't know anything about SFA this year, so they could be a wildcard based on comments in this forum, Del Rio was 6th at Midland and Westfield was 11th at McAllen, so they are in the hunt (but against a stronger field here). I haven't seen or heard much about College Park or Friendswood. But I really think any of the bands I listed above could make finals on the right day. -

For anyone in the area and interested, TWHS will be performing their show after the football game Friday night September 28th (weather permitting) at Woodforest Stadium, as it is homecoming. -

There are many UIL region contests this day, so the participant list is smaller than usual (around 14 bands expected to attend this year). I don't know the full list yet. -

Great story! If I'd have been a little more in touch with marching band in Texas that year, I probably would have raised something similar to what happened this year. What I do remember is that they had the football game on the band schedule from the beginning, so there was not a question, certainly not to a freshman parent. I was not happy about it, but I hadn't discovered this site just yet either.... -

It has never been a question of whether the administration can or can't make the band attend the football game - they can, and that is and has been understood. The question is - is that really the right thing for the band kids? Ostensibly the system is about their education and growth, and that is a powerful path to present against attending a regular season football game. I'm not sure how much community support would be lost by not attending. Per Bandmomx4's comments, there appears to be community support in at least 1 area of The Woodlands. It would be interesting to know how many people affiliated with TWHS actually attend the away game. Bands have conflicts at various points, and may not attend due to weather or some such. I for one will challenge the status of football in Texas - it should not be the tail wagging the dog on every activity in high school. Of course, after this year I no longer have skin in the game, as our youngest is now a senior. He really enjoys band, and is pretty "Meh" on football games. He wants to compete against Reagan, Vandy, and Bowie (and Cy-Fair, Pearland, Churchill, Clear Brook, etc.). I support that and am fighting for his ability to do that at this show. I also think people in the school community don't realize that this contest is livestreamed, and thousands of people will be watching on that, along with a few thousand in the stands. Personally I see that as giving the school a bigger platform than a football game that essentially no one will see, or frankly, care about. As I understand "School Activity", any time a student is part of a school sponsored group, and they present themselves as affiliated with that school, it is a school activity, and therefore all the requirements and rules the school has in place apply. So even though BOA is not UIL, the band performance at that contest is still considered a school activity. I could be wrong, as I didn't check on the definitions before typing. The timing angle is interesting. There is no way the game time will be moved from 6pm. That is set by Klein ISD. If TWHS is in the top 5, the earliest they would perform would be 9:15, with a warmup starting at around 8:00. Klein Memorial Stadium is about 30 minutes from Woodforest Stadium (assuming normal traffic). That would be tight. Maybe they go for the first half, then leave just before halftime. The TWHS Highsteppers can and do use recordings for their show (per a statement made at the Booster meeting last week), so that is a possibility. It would still be best for the band to focus on the contest and not try to make a mad dash across the northern suburbs of Houston. -

Hopefully that doesn't nerf the desktop experience. Last year I would have multiple tabs with each stream open, and watching them on different monitors. If they keep that, and add what they indicated, it would be a good thing. -

College Park has 0 football games on Saturday on their schedule. Oak Ridge has 2, including one that would conflict with UIL Area on October 27. -

Hmmm. That would be a very interesting situation, and one that could plausibly happen. I'm going to check into some of the other CISD football schedules to see if they have a potential conflict with Area. -

I agree on the wording they used - not a good vibe. All we can do is try. If we don't squeak, they'll never try to grease the wheels. -

That is a question I have wondered about too. I would assume that UIL requirements would force the school to allow the band to compete in order to remain in good standing for all school activities. -

TWHSParent replied to gmtb617's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
I agree that a compromise shouldn't be necessary. The band missing 1 football game is not going to make a truly measurable difference to their season (10% of their regular season games), while the band missing a finals opportunity is 25% of the BOA opportunities they have this year, or 20% if you count UIL region. The remaining UIL contests are more like the football playoffs, and you only get to continue if you make each successively higher bar. And that comparison isn't completely valid either, as the band missing part of a contest is completely missed. A totally lost opportunity. While the band missing a football game doesn't mean the football team doesn't compete, so they receive their full season either way. -

The only info in the email I received is "I will be meeting with the Band Directors and Band Student Leadership on Monday to discuss the matter further and to hear all concerns." -

Since you mentioned that, I just checked my email too. I had also copied the Superintendent, so I received the response from both of them about the meeting on Monday. So it will be interesting what comes out. FYI, we are pit parents, and he is a senior this year. He had to skip finals at this contest in 2015 for the same reason, and did not want to repeat that this time, especially now that he knows what these contests mean. -

On the ghosting posts, you'll find that the people behind those very much understand the situation and the unfairness. They aren't truly advocating that anything like that happens (including me). And out of that set of posts, I did learn a new phrase "pickle squirts". That had me rolling. I don't have any contacts with local colleges/universities. U of Houston is doing an exhibition at BOA Conroe - don't know if they could be persuaded to stop in at Klein Memorial Stadium on their way back to campus? Or would one of our other CISD bands be available? How about Grand Oaks? The percussion director there was with TWHS last year. College Park, Oak Ridge, and Conroe are all at the BOA contest. If they don't make finals, could they be a possibility? -

After they performed in prelims, they all drank from the BOA water station and got sick. What? No other bands got sick? Well, we must have drunk all the tainted water then... -

Thank you Cindy. I was clearing my letter with my wife before sending. She has approved, so I'll be sending it out (Done!). I think some of the thoughts and comments in this thread are spot on regarding how things are viewed by the administration. I also think outside of district contacts could help. From the Conroe ISD website http://www.conroeisd.net/board-of-trustees/ Dr. Curtis Null, Superintendent: cnull@conroeisd.net From The Woodlands High School Website http://twhs.conroeisd.net/counseling/faculty-staff/administration/ Dr. Ted Landry, Principal: tlandry@conroeisd.net It almost goes without saying, but please be polite and supportive of the kids and the program. Also moderators - if it isn't appropriate to post these pieces of public info, please let me know and I will delete. -

Klein Cain. Ironically their band is also performing at BOA Conroe in a very early timeslot.
