And so the world stopped and rejoiced as the Danpodcast returned...

My uncle marched for ENHS back in their prime too...trumpet player actually... I am PROBABLY headed down to the Valley this week (assuming funds and everything turn out good), and if I am, I will check out the Edinburg vs Sharyland game. What I saw from Sharyland 2 weeks ago was actually pretty wicked. Can't really say too much since it was their first performance at that time, but if it all comes together, that show is going to be killer. Best of luck to them on that... I had heard that Edinburg was having problems with music for the drumline during the summer...something along the lines of them not receiving it at all. Hope all turned out OK for them...not having any drum parts for a show is rather horrid, especially for the sake of keeping time.

This Marching Season

I second that...you can't really say how someone will think you will do based on past years. This year is a whole new year...some bands may get drastically better, some may fall a little, and so on and so forth. If you feel your band is taking care of business, then success will fall into place all on its own. -
Agreed. I actually enjoyed watching corps that were in the bottom half of the placements, whereas I was bored to tears with a majority of them last year. To answer the topic question, though, I was thinking either Phantom or the Cadets for the win. Cadets had such an amazing thing going for them, but it didn't quite hold up at the end. Even then, they got close. I was hoping Phantom would pull a crazy showing at finals and bump up to second or third, but that didn't happen. Still one of my favorite shows. I LOVED the Firebird part.

Can't believe they won...definitely not a memorable show, but they were the best and executed better than anyone, as the score shows. I would've taken the Cadets for the win this year (despite my personal contempt for the commentary), but they came close this time around. Cavies...poor guys, first time in a while they haven't finished 1st or 2nd. Oh well, as much as I do not really care for the Blue Devils, congrats to them for winning (once again).

Strangely enough, I stumbled across that article today....it's been awhile since I've visited the Onion. -
4A UIL state
trumpetman1288 replied to the terminator's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Area G will likely be Roma and another band from the Corpus/Kingsville area. If I had to pick another, it would be between H.M. King and Gregory Portland. Among those choices, Roma will probably (although not guaranteed) make finals. I can never tell with them because they are not as competitive on non-state years, but during state years....watch out! BOA during 2005 testifies to that (missed finals by a spot with a UIL-ish show). -
This is Funny!

I remember at a USSBA competition a few years back, one band had a trained bird released at the end of their show...the bird didn't come back though. -
so who else hates the heck outta the TAKS

I totally understand, no argument intended. I do LOVE discussion though I was just showing the disadvantages that both larger and smaller schools face. We, however, can't really understand the other unless we are a part of it. My school used to be a middle sized school (growing by more than 600 students throughout my high school years is just crazy), so I understand what the people for the top ten here used to go through. I would say now that we are a large 5A, my class and later classes have it easier than say the class of 2004 had it. -
Lucky...we aren't out until the 31st.

Not trying to sound harsh or anything, but if there are 12 people tied for #1, then I think it shows that it is easier. You look at larger schools and there is only one person ranked #1 because he/she earned it. Two people, although not very common, is understandable for a tie, but 12? Granted, it is harder to be in the top 10% because less slots are available for smaller schools, but it also much harder to be in the top 10 ranks in a class of 500+ students for larger schools. I will say that smaller schools get the short end of the stick when it comes to top 10% because that number may wind up being anywhere from 8-20 people while large schools have 35-60 people. As for Dallas and Houston students having to go to community college...I would say that isn't quite truthful. I know quite a few students that have a 3.0 GPA and are getting out of this area and staying away from community colleges (which really are not as bad as people claim them to be). Your grade does not ultimately determine if you get into a good college, but it certainly helps. -
Whoa...and I just realized that what you posted wasn't the full list. I will most definitely make my way to Houston in October to watch. This contest is actually going to be worth the trip I would need to make. :-D

Wow...that is a REALLY stacked contest.

facebook > myspace Myspace is far too obnoxious for my liking. Some people's sites are so colorful I think I may fall victim to a seizure. Not to mention that I hate having to look around for that stupid little media box whenever people have music on their site.

Did Cal AB today, got English Lit. tomorrow, and Chemistry next Tuesday. Quite fun...

The fun part for us was taunting the knights' servants (squires maybe?) of the other colors (we were black and white) by screaming "BLACK AND WHITE!!!!" at them at the top of our lungs. Some of them stabbed their spears at us through the nets and another one just sort of pretended he couldn't hear us anymore. Ah...t'was great. -

It's always better when it's not so close. People from far away always rant and rave about how great South Padre Island is, and I think they are crazy because it's just a beach...nothing grand. I would probably think differently if I didn't live about an hour away from it. -

So are we! We are going to Medieval Times Thursday, competing Friday evening, and then to Six Flags Saturday. Our knight should have when we went two years ago, but that red knight was evil and killed him -

Director Changes
trumpetman1288 replied to Moose's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
They will have to soon though...4000 students is a lot by any one's standards. Or they could just do what La Joya does down here...build one campus with 2 high schools, one for 9th-10th and another for 11th-12th. It was kind of weird going over there for some event last year (I think it was all-region) and discovering that I was at the wrong high school and that I had to go to another part of campus... -

They'd still have two fairly large marching bands anyways... :-P STILL bigger than many, I might add. -
Don't remember who, but I know that two bands over in region 28 got a 2 on stage but received a 1 in sightreading. If I remember correctly, it was Los Fresnos (5A) and Weslaco East (4A). The only reason I guess I bothered to remember was because it is rather strange to do better on sightreading than on stage.
-
That would make sense. I wasn't sure about it because the year we moved up to 5A, the director of our second band was kind of worried because his didn't think his group was ready to read the same type of stuff that our first band was doing for sightreading. So based off that, I assumed it was only one level.
