  3. Bc profs are lazy and like to assign everything at the last minute -.- Why don't people stick around at this site in the off-season to socialize?
  4. I kinda hoped with Tarpon Springs and Bowie calling themselves "Outdoor Performance Ensembles" and Centerville with the "Centerville Jazz Band" gig they've got going, we'd start to see a new trend with that nomenclature. But it seems like these are the only groups that are doing it. I do seem to recall some band referring to themselves as a "Marching Wind Symphony" or "Marching Wind Ensemble" but I forget who it was.
  5. 176 posts.....you're quite defensive of your thread . Keep fighting the good fight .
  6. There's something like 100 or 110 universities in Texas, 30 or 40-something have marching bands, though there are a lot more with some kind of band or music program. There's somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 community colleges in Texas, less than half have band programs (roughly a dozen or so have marching bands). Giving an exact or even rough number of participants in the college band activity is really tough though.
  7. I thought Key Poulan arranged Scheherazade for SCV in 2004? There were other arrangers doing Scheherazade before the Key Poulan arrangement so it could have been any one of them.
  8. Free Willy!
  9. SHSU Wind Ensemble concert at Dekaney HS in Spring ISD last Tuesday went great. We played: A brass fanfare by Gabrieli Some Spanish piece by Joaquin Rodrigo "Chorale and Alleluia" by Howard Hanson "Concerto for Brass Trio" by Floyd Werle "Symphony for Band" by Morton Gould
  10. Yeah, that's right. If I'd thought about it a little more I would have realized that . I knew Troyka was the big promoter for their Grand Nationals trip so I figured the 2006-2007 school year was his last year and he was the one who took them, but in actuality it was the year before that was his last year.
  11. You must have a real affinity for the music of Koji Kondo. He does most of the music for Nintendo's franchises including 4 of the games on that list (but I imagine you already knew that). I never played Super Mario Galaxy though one of my roommates played through it when it first came out. I got to hear a lot of Kondo's awesome music for a couple weeks while he played through the game .
  12. 1999: The Music of Tchaikovsky 2000: An American Suite (Gary Wylie: Theme on "Star Spangled Banner", "Tempered Steel", "Chester Overture", Star Spangled Banner reprise) 2001: Selections from West Side Story (Key Poulan) 2002: American Stained Glass (Gary Wylie: "Abram's Pursuit", "Be Thou My Vision", "Sym. No.4" by James Barnes) 2003: In the Shadow of the Dragon (Key Poulan) 2004: Scheherazade (Key Poulan) 2005: Rhythm and Ritual (Arranger?: "Kyrie", "Danza de los Duendes", "Elfin Thunderbolt") 2006: Passage to the Pyramid (Key Poulan) 2007: The Rise and Fall of Rome (Key Poulan) 2008: Fighter Flight (Daniel Montoya Jr.: 1000 Airplanes on a Roof, Equus, "Flight" from Cirque du Soleil's 'Ka', Serenada Schizophrana) There's a lot of info for schools and the shows they've performed on the [out-of-date] marching wiki on this site. That won't get you very far, but you can do even more research by simply watching LOTS of marching bands (on Youtube, going to contests and taking notes etc.), and just listen to lots and lots of diverse music and write what YOU think would sound good.
  13. Well said....it was my favorite VGS until Chrono Cross came out. ehh.....I'll admit a lot of that music ports well to orchestra (and the recordings of some of those arrangements; namely "Aerith", "One Winged Angel" and the "Main Theme" were simply amazing) but I just didn't like the instrument palette enough on that game to enjoy its music. Final Fantasy 8 had some really awesome music though and it too ports well over to orchestra.
  14. No idea, but speaking of musicals: Ok.....it's definitely high time we put THIS on the field, and I know some of you agree: Paradise Lost: Shadows and Wings Maybe open with "Bliss", segue into "Children of Paradise", "Close Your Eyes" for the ballad and finish it off with "Libertas Imperio"? I dunno, you decide. This music is surreal. EDIT: On this subject, like one above me I really do think Blue Man Group would sound great on the field.
  15. Using those uniforms should be a mortal sin .
  16. It'd be nice to see some new faces in there with the potential to make a splash. Marcus, Cedar Park, Hebron, Berkner and Brazoswood are some that come to mind. I could see Berkner making the trip sometime in the near future. Frank Troyka has strong ties with BOA and he took his old band (Cypress Falls) to Grand Nationals in 2006.
  17. heh....awesome. That FJM uniform design isn't original though (it's from one of their templates, there was 1 band at GN that made it to semis that had the exact same uniform design, even down to the colors). But considering it's a PASIC ad, then I have no doubt it's Georgetown (I can't tell if that's urkadrums though, the pic is too rough, she'd have to speak for herself I guess lol). I'm a little curious as to why PASIC didn't use 2007 Fred Sanford award-winner Flower Mound to appear in that ad instead of 2006's winner (Gtown)....maybe they thought Georgetown's uniforms were flashier....or it could just be that they designed the ad in '06 or early '07 and didn't feel like making another one (I'll bet the same ad was in last year's program as well). Wow....a high school student flying up to the opposite side of the country to watch a marching band competition in the middle of the school year. You have family/friends up there to visit that would serve as a secondary purpose of traveling or do you just love marching band that much?
  18. Expected. And it makes me happy knowing since Georgetown couldn't go this year, that Round Rock still held it down. Area D Lines rep'. EDIT: I'm guessing Burleson had some crazy Bass feature in their book that must have been clean has heck, since they won the Bass caption and aren't even in the top 10.
  19. Maybe for Drum Corps, but for all the different tone colors that marching bands put off, the acoustics of a closed-in area bleeds them all together in reverb, which imo sounds awesome! I can't imagine what a power chord from a top 5 drum corps would sound like in a stadium of the likes of which you're describing if they keep the roof closed. It might actually be a better move for them to open it up. So do you think having all these curtains up altered the sound some? If so, was it for the better or was it worse?
  20. You seen Westfield 2004 and 2005? 2004 is ALL Nobuo Uematsu music, and 2005 features music from Uematsu and Eric Whitacre. One of my favorite shows ever.

  22. L.D. Bell is aeonically epic. There are no other words...... The band pulled a Spring 2000 and left the playing area before the show was even done.....heck they practically left the freaking stadium.....that of course means an automatic penalty, so there's no doubt they have an ending planned for finals that doesn't involve them exiting the stadium--the staff would be out of their minds to give up any crucial points for finals that could cost them the championship just for the sake of being original.
  23. Tarpon Springs is going to dominate. I really like their show this year. Sadly I won't get to see it tomorrow morning (Doing Field Observations in Klein ISD's elementary music classes all day tomorrow) but I'll definitely catch it before the week's end.
