  5. Here's who I put for my finals predictions (granted, I have not seen any of the Region 11 or Region 29 bands this year, so I more or less guessed for most of them): I will say that I'm not certain that Lake Travis will be able to hold onto that fourth place spot (hence my 5th place my prediction for them), but I could be wrong!
  6. Just two: Region 23 and Region 27 (per here: https://align.tmea.org/align_2426/index.php)
  7. Apparently this Area contest is going to one of three that will be live-streamed on the NFHS Network: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/events/uil/gam1093d30a13

  9. Apparently the NFHS Network, the livestream broadcast provider for UIL: https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/associations/uil/band-competition
  10. This might only be the case for World Class (as in you have to choose to compete in World Class, otherwise you're assigned a Group)? I found the following breakdown here: https://usbands.org/about/
  11. Here's a bio write-up on Beth Bronk I found from a Facebook post from right before she guest-conducted the Heart of Texas Concert Band early this year: "Beth Bronk is in her third [I presume now fourth] year as the Director of Fine Arts at Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD, where she supports band, choir, orchestra, K-12 visual art, elementary music, theatre, dance, and cheer. Prior to coming to SCUCISD, Professor Bronk spent 16 years as Director of Bands at Texas Lutheran University, where she taught conducting, instrumental music education courses, and directed the TLU Bands. AT TLU, Bronk received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Service and Leadership, the Baenziger Professorship in Music, the Harold D. Bier Award for Teaching Excellence, and was nominated by her university for the Minnie Stevens Piper Award for Teaching Excellence. She served four years as the Vice-President for Professional Relations on the National Council of Tau Beta Sigma, where she coordinated the National Intercollegiate Band. Bronk has presented nationally and internationally on wind band pedagogy, ensemble development, and intonation instruction. Her public-school service includes 18 years of high school band directing and administration, fifteen of those in New Braunfels ISD. Ms. Bronk earned her Bachelor of Music, Performance Certificate, and teaching certification at the University of Texas at Austin, a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas, and completed her doctoral coursework in Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Bronk is an active clinician, conductor, performer, and presenter."
  12. This webpage lists a table of all of the 2025 Area Contest dates/locations along with their inclement weather dates and locations: https://www.uiltexas.org/music/marching-band/area The vast majority of the contests would be in their exact same locations on their inclement weather dates, with the exception of 2A Area C, 4A Area C, and 5A Area F. The former two list the exact same location and date for their respective inclement weather backups (October 25 at Lindale High School's Indoor Field; this is also confirmed by info on the Region 21 website). I'm really not sure what kind of scheduling hijinks might happen if both the 2A Area C and 4A Area C contests are weather-delayed...
  13. Since when did the location of this contest shift to Gupton Stadium in Cedar Park instead of Rutledge (I think that's the name?) Stadium in San Antonio? Source: https://www.uilmusicregion11.org/6a-area-contest.html
  14. I have a lot of thoughts on this, but I'm just going to post some thoughts below for now and maybe I'll add more later. Having a prelims and finals (or also semifinals in the middle of those two, like in the case of BOA Grand Nationals) format for a marching contest already literally announces a partial amount of the preliminary results, regardless of whatever formula is used to choose the finalist bands and what order they perform in finals. I guess you could argue that you know more about what placement range the finalists landed in with top half/bottom half split for finalist performance times, but even then, that's only slightly more information for the public until after the contest is over. Question for you: what actually goes into making a band jump up in placements between prelims and finals? Did the band have a better performance in finals? In the case of UIL 4A/5A/6A State, was the visual individual judge at the right place at the right time to not spot certain visual errors (some of which may or may not have been present in prelims, finals, or both), and was that enough to even influence the overall score for the band? Did one music ensemble judge in prelims have a bias in focusing on specific aspects of the musical performance compared to another music ensemble judge in finals (if this isn't how this works at UIL State these days, correct me if I'm wrong), and was that enough to even influence the overall score for the band? How experienced were each of the judges overall? What about their experience with each caption/subcaption? In my opinion, ANY of these factors in combination with each other (along with a host of numerous other factors) could be at play. In my non-expert view (just from a high school band alum and fan here), adjudicating the marching arts is trying to make something that is both objective and subjective into something that appears to be fully objective on a thin surface, but is still subjective (and objective) to a degree. Add on top of the fact that each high school marching band has a season that, for each group, include anywhere from a few to numerous contests and is filled with numerous other non-judged performances and countless rehearsals, all for one "product": a show that, by default, likely doesn't change dramatically between prelims and finals in one contest. Obviously, that has not always been reflected been reflected in the scoring in UIL contests, but that begs the question: what goes into a band's placement beyond what's on the adjudication sheet?
  15. I'm a little surprised that there wasn't a thread on this topic yet, so let's spread some appreciation for the West Texas/Panhandle 6A bands! Here's the tentative contest schedule: https://www.tmearegion22.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/6A-Area-Marching-Contest-2025.pdf
  16. The minutes from the MAC Committee Meeting were posted yesterday: https://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/2019_July_MAC_Minutes.pdf All of the proposals and actions items up for vote at the meeting passed. I found this new proposal to be very interesting: "A discussion item was brought forward from the Region 13 band division for UIL to create a Division I and Division II state marching band contest in 6A. This item will be included in the Spring 2020 agenda for all regions to discuss."
  17. Vandegrift High School alumnus; former clarinetist. I'm not a very active poster, but I still occasionally lurk around the forums.

  20. Also, I apologize if the video doesn't show on some of y'all's browsers. I'm having similar issues to what LeanderMomma had, and the video doesn't show on my end.
  21. Vandegrift: I'm no marching contest judge by any means, but they sound scary good for only three days of working on the music. Also, does any recognize the music they are playing? It is definitely a departure from their usual repertoire of "standard classical music" (for lack of better terminology), though to be clear, I love whatever they are playing.
  22. Given that the bands ranked 41st and up in prelims had at least a score of an 80, this is unsurprising. There was some serious score inflation for the scores of the majority of the bands.
