Yeah we have been pretty quiet so far because we opted out of BOA Houston and we were considering Lone Star but...it's Lone Star. The only thing we've done is regular UIL and we got all 1's like always so that doesn't tell much except for those who saw it.

However, a storm is definitely brewing. There's so much potential and we're so close to getting it going. From what we've been told, the only difference between us and the Woodlands is that we don't have as much confidence. A good half of us do but the other half doesn't quite hold up as high. I think this is just because we haven't gone to anything so we don't precisely know where we are compared to the other BOA bands in terms of BOA scoring. This will improve over the next two weeks and once we get San Antonio done the band will be fine for Indy. We also plan on getting higher than 7th this year so watch out.

It'll be a good year for a lot of bands ^_^

Mainly directed at that last statement in your sig.

I have a question that perhaps some of you who are more knowledgeable in the ways of BOA might be able to answer. There are 29 bands playing in prelims on Friday and 29 playing in prelims on Saturday in San Antonio. As I understand it, there will be 14 finalists after all is said and done on Saturday evening.

With that configuration, any Friday band that's not in the top 14 after the Friday prelims would have no mathematical possibility of being included in the finals. The Saturday prelims would have no bearing on that; if you're not in the top 14 from Friday it's impossible for you to be one of the overall 14 finalists on Saturday. That means 15 bands are out on Friday and BOA will know which bands right after the last one plays that evening.

Does BOA inform these 15 Friday bands that they're out of the running in some way BEFORE they load their kids and equipment and come back on Saturday, hoping that they're in finals; and if not, why not?

I doubt it. They want those bands to come in to rack in ticket sales and concessions, etc. from the support that comes with them and themselves if they choose to stay after not making finals. Some call that evil but I call it well played business.

I don't think it matters this much. I for one don't care if a band places 1st or 50th, if its good music and has good drill then I'm happy to have seen the band perform. If I'm a kid from Churchill I'm starting to get sick and tired of the topic being about locks, bubbles, and Churchill decline....That is all, I will go back to letting you kids have at it

Well said! I don't think anyone has a right to judge Churchill based on their bad luck. It takes an INSANE amount of work to keep a quality program through all of those obstacles. They deserve to be given props rather than talked about in a stupid lock/bubble conversation. It seems almost ignorant to say a band has "gotten worse" based on scores and placements. Just saying it was nice to see a nice comment like that ^. I feel for those kids.

I'm still looking for performance times for BOA SA. There is nothing currently posted on the Music for All web site. I assume everyone knows what time they are supposed to play. Any idea where's that posted?

Check page 2

My alma mater just posted the prelim schedule for Friday and Saturday.

Friday schedule 12:00pm-8:00pm

Saturday schedule 7:30am-3:30pm

I don't believe they do. Round Rock performs on Friday, and we plan on going for the performance, coming back to Round Rock for the football game, and then going back to see if we made finals.

If you look at BOA San Antonio as a 2-day festival and celebration of achievement and not some contest where some bands are being jipped out of their money and time for showing up on Saturday only to be denied a finals spot, then it's not as big of a deal. Most bands invest in this as a 2-day educational event that includes a mixture of performing, watching other bands perform, eating out and enjoying the venue/location and doing other activities (This is even more the case for Grand Nationals, which is technically a 4-day event). Many directors know they aren't going to make finals....and some leave early knowing this (some will budget the money to return just in case, and then use the money on something else if they don't make it) but the directors that choose to stay will plan things to do with their band on Saturday until the announcement, then will stay to watch all of finals (or have separate buses for the students that want to go home and the students that want to stay and watch) should they not make the cut.

Your suggestion to prerelease some of the scores is only beneficial to the small number of schools who see this as nothing more than a contest, and also ruins the spirit of the competition for everyone else at the festival. "If you didn't plan on sticking around, you're probably not ready to be here" I think is the bottom line.

Most of them aren't ready to be there anyway.

That last block after lunch on Saturday is going to be INTENSE.

Marcus, Cedar Park, L.D. Bell, Vandegrift, Leander, Haltom

HOLY.

I agree. It's going to be a very intense contest between all of us. I'm really excited to see how the competition ends for all the bands this year. Whether a band makes finals or not, they all but forth a truly amazing show every year. I cannot wait until November 5th! Good luck to all the bands! (:

Hey I just thought i would start an official thread to talk about BOA San Antonio.

Just by glancing at the list and with the knowledge of Bands i know. (I haven't heard of every band on that list) This is kinda how i think it might stack up for those 14 final spots.

Final "locks":

Cedar Park

Bowie

LD Bell

Marcus

Reagan

Stephen F Austin

Vandegrift

Churchill

The "Bubble": ( i think any of these schools have a good shot at finals)

Anderson H.S., TX

Brazoswood H.S., TX

Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX

Hebron H.S., TX

Leander H.S., TX

Mansfield H.S., TX

McNeil H.S., TX

Pflugerville H.S., TX

Round Rock H.S., TX

Spring H.S., TX

Stephen F. Austin H.S., TX

The Woodlands College Park H.S., TX

The Woodlands H.S., TX

Vista Ridge H.S., TX

W. Charles Akins H.S., TX

Westlake H.S., TX

Opinions?

I'm just gonna throw it in there that I wouldn't consider Reagan a lock.

IMHO the only true locks are:

Cedar Park

Bowie

LD Bell

Marcus

Stephen F Austin

Vandegrift

How can you put Vandegrift as a "lock" when they didn't even make finals at BOA Conroe? I'd replace Vandegrift with The Woodlands and that list would make more sense.

Because the week after BOA Conroe, Vandegrift beat Cedar Park at Vista Ridge, and took 1st in finals.

These past 2 years, Vandegrift has had extreme variations in their placements from one week to the next and even from one performance to the next on the same day. No matter how good you are or how many people you have beat, with such variance in placements, you can't be considered a "lock" by any measure.

If I remember correctly, those bands that are closest to the competition go on Friday as they can go home easily and return to the stadium on time if they are called to Finals-such as the local San Antonio bands and also the sooner you turn in your money and paperwork stating that you want to compete the better your 'pick' of the day that you want. The 'first come-first served' principal.

I was always under the impression that everyone had a random pick.

CentexBandKid is right, it's just a random pick.
