Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Fiery Shostakovich show from Fantasia. Holy weapon blocks! That was pretty awe-inspiring. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Ohhhhh. I wanna be in AMP just for their costumes and makeup! Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Oh Em Gee. I am AMPED after that performance! Dang!!!!!!!! Quote
SpartanBandAlum Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Wish I had FloMarching just so I could see Etude live later Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Want me to video it and share it with you? Or is that a no no. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Hmmmm. Onyx was too chaotic for me. I’m sure the show must be awesome but I was overwhelmed by it. And definitely not understanding the running around in your underwear thing. Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Loved Onyx. Kooky, crazy, creative, brilliant show. I also loved CGT Dallas. What a remarkable (and imposing) floor design. Great performance, too! Lots of theatrics again. Quote
LKendrick Posted April 7, 2019 Author Posted April 7, 2019 I just saw CGT Denton’s surprise ending (didn’t notice on high cam). Hahaha love it. Them and Dallas are just a blast. And in that note a ton of the shows in IW this year are just flat out entertaining or beautiful and easy to interpret. Two lovers trying to connect, cops and robbers, cowboys, tornadoes, etc. A lot of the old fogeys on certain forums preach about how heady and hard to understand artsy fartsy WGI is but to me it’s incredibly entertaining with a ton of variety. Yes there are shows that make you think but there are also a ton of shows that make you want to leap out of your seat. Something for everyone. LeanderMomma 1 Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Great, great performance from Bluecoats Indoor. But I still don't really feel this show. It doesn't take me places. Very static feeling. I'm sure it's intentional, but... Quote

LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 OTOH Etude was simply lovely and I felt every moment. Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Gorgeous show from Etude. The petals fluttering in the air are so lovely. Okay, time to see if I was right about Blessed Sacrament's music. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 This Blessed Sacrament show was endlessly interesting. Couldn’t look away even for a moment. I felt hypnotized. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Imbue totally made me forget I was watching a CG competition. It was several minutes in before I remembered this was WGI. I swear I thought I was watching Dr. Zhivago. That was.......other worldly. Quote
immortalBlueOrchid Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Ughhh I just love Onyx this year. And basically everyone this year. This is a fantastic year for winterguard. Also Onyx’s reference to Bizarre Bazaar was brilliant haha. Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 I was right! That opening piano was from Gattaca! Blessed Sacrament was elegant, but a bit bloodless. I just don't think there's anything particularly remarkable about the design. Lots to admire, but not much to wow me. They'll do very well regardless. Loving that creepy, stiff walk that Imbue was doing. It must be pretty scary to toss your rifles over those metal jungle gym-looking things and have to crawl through them really fast to catch the rifles on the other side. They just nailed it. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Goodness. The talent in these top tier IW groups is simply remarkable. Quote

Parkwoodmom Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 I was mesmerized by Diamanté. Couldn’t take my eyes away. Quote
immortalBlueOrchid Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Don’t get me wrong. I like Pride’s show this year, but when I found out they were using music by Son Lux, I think I set my expectations too high. I really like the props but a lot of the performance isn’t particularly impressive to me (probably because my untrained eye doesn’t know where to look half the time)...I know the best IW groups have a huge influence on weapon work, but I think a flag ensemblance moment is needed. I just don’t think the visual flow is very strong as is. Although, I will say that I think Pride is a nice change from the elegant shows of Diamante and Paramount. It’s definitely more high-energy and creative. Onyx is still my favorite Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Paramount was otherworldly. The music, those gauzy blue tops that they were wearing, that beautiful choreography and equipment work. It put me in a trance. Fantastic show. And Pride of Cincinnati was Pride of Cincinnati. They'll probably end their season undefeated. Brilliant design, and their equipment skills were unmatched. Favorites from the night: Both CGT groups (keep up the good work!), Onyx, Paramount, and Pride of Cincinnati. Lots of other fine groups as well. It was a strong year for guard. I don't necessarily think any of the shows will end up being considered all-time great shows, but there was plenty to keep you engaged. Okay, I'm leaving now. I'll check the scores later! Quote
immortalBlueOrchid Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 My only complaint with Paramount is why is the final rifle toss so meh???? Quote

Music for Paramount is from Phantom Thread. GORGEOUS score for that movie by interestingly enough Radioheads Johnny Greenwood. Love that movie too. Quote
LeanderMomma Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Ha! Best #wgi2019 tweet of the day! The lakes are deep and the dunes are steep deep in the heart of michigan? Quote
Rubisco Posted April 7, 2019 Posted April 7, 2019 Recaps are up. Nothing too surprising. 98.950 for Avon. That's got to be close to the highest all-time score. 3 out of the 4 judges gave them 100s in effect. I should have watched it on high cam. Maybe I'd be more in agreement with those numbers. Happy to see Carmel launch up into 2nd. That's where I would have had them, but if you look at the recaps, there was A LOT of disagreement. Upset that West Broward just missed the bronze. Such a fun show! And I thought they executed it better than Center Grove executed their show. I feel bad for Bluecoats Indoor. A penalty knocked them from 7th to 9th. Still, how much of a difference is it to say you placed 7th versus 9th? I still don't understand some of Blessed Sacrament's scores (2nd place in design analysis, really?), but it has become clear over the years that the judges at these events (marching band events included) are a little bit more traditional-minded than I am. At least, that's what I think explains *some* aspects of the results. Whatever! C'est la vie! Quote
