I was browsing around the internet during class today and found a site that has a whole bunch of midi files that you can listen to. It had Appalachian Spring, one of my favorite pieces. That was one of the coolest things I've ever heard. A 25 minute long midi. How do you make songs into midi files? Do you have to rewrite them all? Or is there a program that will make them? Just wondering.... I should be asleep...but instead I'm posting on here.... zzzzzgoodnight!

Midi files, though with help of computers, have to be written by hand. Basically, mp3 (etc) is a digital file of a recording. A midi is a series of computer generated tones... its not recorded from anything.

Basically, we don't have the technology to go from hearing chords on a digitial file from a recording and turning it into computer beeps.

That being said, as Danpod mentioned, if you can get your hands on a score or have a great ear and a lot of patience, you can use software to write a midi.
