Figured I would put my two cents in.

It's okay to have predictions, we can all agree to disagree if we choose to do so. Yes, I'm sure most of us that are frequent visitors to this page have favorites for one reason or another.

I think the problem that people don't understand is there are numerous bands in 4A that are good and potential state shows. However, until I see Celina get beat by a 4A at a competition it's hard to go against them because they are on another level.

I think what some people don't understand is that in 4A there are probably 3-4 schools that you could argue could compete in 5A for a State Title. Just like in 3A there are probably 2 schools that could beat most 4A's at the State Level.

Unfortunately in 4A Area C it is probably one of the toughest Area's to get out of especially with the realignment that took place last year.  There is simply not enough spots for all the bands to advance to State so that leaves some bands on the outside looking in that in the past could of had a chance to make state.

I think if all of us went to a musical judge training session we would all probably understand what separates "great" bands from "good" bands and understand that there is a huge gap between bands that are "Great" and bands that are "Good". To this day to be honest I still don't know the scoring difference between BOA and UIL.

Yes it looks great on the field but do we all truly understand the scoring system and how some band's music is considered to be difficult and some bands with a good show have music that is not that difficult but it looks good.

If you went to Area and watched all the Finals performances you could tell there was a huge difference in the schools that advanced to State. However, to the casual fan you don't see the little things which then lead to bigger things that prevented schools from getting where they wanted to go.

Yes, we can all sit here and predict the usual suspects to make it to State because the odds say they probably will but it's a long way to go and everything is moved up a week this year due to state competition held the first week in November instead of the 2nd week like last year.

The first several weeks most of the shows will be lucky to maybe have their 1st/2nd movement ready to play. Most schools don't have their shows fully ready until the last 2-3 weeks before Regionals and even then they are still tweaking it.

I know Farmersville, North Lamar and PG and Pine Tree are all gonna battle in Mineola on Oct 4 in the Iron Horse Classic which I am leaning on going to that over the "Sounds of the Fall" in Princeton so I can get a preview.

Honestly, this is the realist thing I have seen on this website. I think some of your points about fandom and bias are really good. The other thing that I saw was that this real was someone said the people predicting this early are basing it on just reputation and last years scorces.

its just better to tell after the first football game because of the first movment. right now its all pretty based off show themes

Why PG so low? I thought they were underrated.

I think Farmersville is on the rise too.

in MY opinion i think pg will be a one season wonder. theyre 100% in the state conversation i just think they will max be 7 like last year. they used van alstynes old show last season that didnt make finals. idk what they did to it that was state worthy or what van alstyne did that wasnt worthy enough for finals.

farmersville is fs a underdog. i put them 5 because they kind of had a disapointing state run. what i shouldve done is pput them at 4 instead of BC

Coming from a farmersville marcher, I'm not so sure how it will go for Farmersville. They're show this year, musically atleast, is similar to Celina's past shows. I do think the fact that they used VanDoren last year for their show helped them alot to get to state. This year they chose to go with a different designer so we'll just have to see how they do. I definitely expect them to be heading to state though since they consistently beat bands like Vanalstyne and PG and Last year managed to beat North Lamar a couple of times.

See this is the info that I like to hear about but doesn't get as much attention. Things like Director changes, creative staff changes, a school that went to a 4-day week, a significant number of a band misses lots of time due to covid (it's getting bad in schools here right now, and it's hard for band kids to not share viruses), having a significant reduction or increase in funding....

I thought the Farmersville show was a good one last year. It was a visual treat, but the musical hype seemed to really be focused on the stellar soloists. It seemed to fall a little flat at state. I thought the area run was much more exciting. Maybe it was nerves? I never know what I’m talking about, though.

I’ve wondered since last year how much the rain impacted the area placement. It rained a lot during bridge city’s show and they placed 3rd. Like I said, I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I wondered if the judges were a little more lenient with them. I had them advancing, but not top three.

we haven’t talked about them much, but Paris has a new director since Grissom retired. I’ve also been told north Lamar has some budget concerns. I know it was absolutely slashed last year after the new team came in.

So BC actually kicked it up once it started raining heavy during prelims & everyone had to pull out umbrellas. Area was their best performance last year. Both area rounds were consistent from judges for them so I wouldn't assume the judges went easy on them. They also weren't the only band that got rained on. When did Paris director retire? Did they get anyone special in their place? Their show was a crowd pleaser & we loved the girl playing accordion. If I recall correctly, they were hurt by missing points in difficulty. I don't recall if that was in music or marching though. The rankings shuffling at state was not surprising when going from a 5 judge to 7 judge panel. Maybe it's just me, but I personally hate that they judge 6A schools a day before 4A. Budgets and resources don't even come close. Alamodome is just different too. Experience helps. And sometimes bands just lose momentum...

Thanks for clarifying. I just can’t remember much about the BC performance other than the rain. I knew it rained on a few other bands but I didn’t think any of those bands were shooting for finals.

i loved the Paris performance but it was easy on both the music and the marching side. Props were great, accordion was great. Paris has the oldest municipal band in Texas and they either close or open every concert by playing “I love Paris” so that made their show really special. I think one of the assistants took over the head job but I’m not certain. I knew Grissom and some of the old timers from the MS but I don’t know the new people

Why would a different amount of judges affect the rankings so much?

Does any other bands beside Paris have new directors? I remember someone on this or another thread saying NL has a new director starting last year. It looks like he’s doing good but some people think the other one was better.

I thought Cantons show was the most exciting. I heard that they have the same head director but a new guy is running more of the marching band. I wish they got more credit for their power.

What was Canton's theme last year? And I think someone here said that China Spring & West Plains both had their head directors move schools.

Only saw Hebron on stream tonight which is fantastic, but I really wanted to see Flower Mound.

You should post about that on the 6A area B topic.

Yeah that's my bad. I'm out-of-state so I'm not very familiar with the individual areas😅

found SS’s show!

Solely from the *Fan in the Stands* viewpoint, I liked their first movement last year better. It was more engaging. This one seems like they are going musically more towards what Celina.might choose.

Is having the metronome going (and easily heard) while playing an actual halftime performances a common thing?  Saw video of 2 top 10 state finalists where it was clearly heard. A third may have had it but the audio quality was not great.
