I also have Marshall on the list of bands that did not advance - if this is the same Marshall listed like this in the "All Region Results" thread under Region 23:

Non-Varsity 5A (Does Not move on past Region)-

Marshall HS (Missouri City)- 2

EDIT: My calculations were all messed up.  I didn't remember two of the "bands" on the draw list are just "BLANK" slots in case they forgot someone.  Using your list above of bands that DID Make it and starting from 0 instead of 46 .... it seems there are 21 bands currently qualified for area.  If four more qualify, we will be at 25 bands... meaning five slots to state.  Last year, five of the remaining bands (that perform today) received straight 1's - so we should be in good shape.

Sorry for jumping the gun, just ready for AREA!

Here are the rules from the UIL site.  If we have at least 30 bands to Area (which seems likely) then there will be 12 finalists, unless the rules have changed?

EDIT: I think you are right after all - my calculations are all messed up and it does not look like we will have more than 29 bands make it... so it will most likely be 10 finalists. Apologies.

If there are 9 or fewer bands that qualify for an area contest the preliminary round will stand as the final round.

If there are 9 or fewer bands in a state contest the top 5 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, in the five-judge system only, any band below fifth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the visual judges will also advance to the final round.

If there are 10 to 19 bands that qualify for an area contest or 10 to 19 bands in a state contest the top 7 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, in the five-judge system only, any band below seventh place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the visual judges will also advance to the final round.

If there are 20 to 29 bands that qualify for an area contest or 20 to 29 bands in a state contest the top 10 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, in the five-judge system only, any band below tenth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the visual judges will also advance to the final round.

If there are 30 or more bands that qualify for an area contest or 30 to 39 bands in a state contest the top 12 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, in the five-judge system only, any band below twelfth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the visual judges will also advance to the final round.

If there are 40 or more bands in a state contest the top 14 bands will advance from the preliminary round to the final round. In addition, in the five-judge system only, any band below fourteenth place that receives a ranking of three or higher from at least two of the music judges and one of the visual judges will also advance to the final round.

Ohhh okay thank you! The sample schedule had only 10 finalists and I didn't know if that was true or not, it seemed unlikely

There are 46 bands on the Draw order list.  If 7 are out so far we're at 39, pending the outcome of today.  Do we know of any bands that either 1) Will qualify but choose not to participate in Area or 2) Go to Military Marching State instead?

If the remaining bands all get the same score as last year, and knowing Huntsville at least is Military, it looks like we will have between 30-34 to area, giving us six slots to state.  Am I mathing right?  🙂

Crosby and Montgomery are military, I do not know about any who choose not to participate in area so this seems correct :D

Huntsville is also military.

I edited both my posts above - there were errors in both of them!  Sorry about that.

Thoughts on Friendswood and what place will they get at state ?

i haven't seen their full show yet but they will probably be area champions, as usual 😊 don't know too much about state i fear :(

Region 9 results are in!  Lake Creek and Splendora both receive straight 1's and advance to Area!

Huntsville also received straight 1's but they are military.  Montgomery, also military, got a 2.

If my math is right, that brings us to 25 bands that advance to Area E 5A.  So there should be 5 state slots!  Still waiting on Region 23 - hopefully we get one or two more for a buffer.

Hi, do ya'll mind explaining the state spots being 5 cause I'm a bit confused with how the rules work. If I counted correctly, 31 bands recieved 1s for this area. Then, the new Gene Tomas school was non-varsity for their 1st year so i think that means they don't count for area advancement and/or the number of state spots. So now it is 30 which would mean 6 spots I think. Military bands do count toward the number, but is it true that bands that choose not do do area or military events sanctioned by uil, do not count towards the area number and state spots? If that is the case, then which bands are not participating in uil marching related events after region evaluations? I can think of a few bands do not always go such as nederland or dayton.

Ok, I didn't know military bands counted towards the number, since they usually go to the State Military Marching Band Contest instead.  That's great news!

Also there was a missing band in the list posted above - I just double-checked all the regions though, and here is the updated list - please feel free to correct me if I missed anyone this time around.  BUT if Military counts, that's great news....because now we are at 30 bands to qualify and 6 spots to State, as you said!    I stand corrected, and gladly so!

is nederland military or no? asking because whenever i look them up i get nothing 😭

Yes, Nederland is Military however they only do Region and that's it. I don't think they have gone to an area contest since the mid 2000's. They honestly could do decent at Military State however the directors just choose to end it at region every year.

Also, this is not a gripe at Nederland, but their routine is copied and pasted every year. They are the biggest offender when it comes to the same ole stuff every year.

That's not official.  I shared that with some others and they are not so sure - I don't really understand all the components to the formula, I'm just an overzealous band dad.  🙂

so in the event it will be six state spots, i think it'll be brenham or la porte for fifth and kempner or maybe porter for 6th :D porter seems to be getting better at every comp they go to, from what i've seen. unless major upsets happen, i think the top four are set in stone. could not tell you about brenham's show but it seems to be similar to LP's
