  1. Ah, wow...I had missed that becuase they didn't make finals any of those years. I didn't know back then only 10 bands made finals (at least in 96 it was like that)...Seems like in 96 Irmo missed finals by one spot. Thanks for clearing it up
  2. Actually Dinkins never took Irmo to Grand Nats...They went in 92, the year before he got there, and then in 2001 the year after he left. This would be the first time that Mr. Dinkins would be taking a band himself to Indy And being in the program, I can't say yes or no to if they would be going becuase no official announcement has been made (just talk from the directors about going). I'd wait until the official list is posted to see.
  3. Aaron, try Mozart's "Overture to the Magic Flute." Assuming it's played up to tempo, and you have a rockin 4th horn player (the 4th part is mostly all in bass clef), this piece can be REALLY fun, although really difficult. It's a lot of fast 8th note stuff, so it tends to drag a lot.
  4. Just out of curiosity, how many kids from your school are planning on marching drum corps (06) or have previously marched? At bowie, we had a lot of kids marching while ago, but we're a bit lacking today. Some of the bowie alumni include; Brian Perez of SCV fame (00-04 tenors) A few Cavaliers Snares (attended bowie too long ago for me to know them) Phantom Regiment Mellophone, Trumpet, and Bass Drum A few others in Pioneer and Revolution That's all I can come up with off the top of my head.
  5. Head Director plays clarinet, so no drum corps for him + 1 assistant who plays sax. One Assistant Director marched Spirit of Atlanta sop back in the mid-80s (82-88?), he was their featured soloist a bunch of years, including opening with Georgia in 87. Another Assistant Director who teaches the percussion played timpani for Sky Ryders in 93. Our music arranger/former marching instructor marched cadets 98 and blue devils 99 + regiment visual tech in 01 In terms of techs, Bluecoats Baritone 01-05 Revolution Baritone 02-03 (?)/SCV 04/Blue Devils 05-06 Bluecoats Bass 04-05 Cadets Trumpet 03-05 (still years to go, not sure if he'll go back this year) Blue Devils Contra 94 Crossmen Snare 99-00 (?)/Colts Visual Tech 05
  6. Looks promising, that chorale (is it possibly the show music?) that Key Poulan was conducting sounded really good! It was a bit saddening to see the drumline playing with flat drums, but I'm ready to see what they'll throw out. It looks like a great camp turnout! (Although the hornline seems a bit small from the pictures?) http://www.scvanguard.org/about/news.php?id=1133422299
  7. Just out of curiosity - if you attend Westfield (and are in the band I presume by your signature)....how did you watch all the shows? Also, why do you refer to your band as if you're not a member?
  8. Concert season...mmmmm...... I like both seasons equally, although for different reasons. I really love Wind Ensemble and getting to play all the great literature out there with other good players (and the Air Conditioning, and no mellophones!) Usually our director hands out A LOT of music now in the fall and we just read a bunch of things until he finds a piece that's really a lock for us and works well with the group, so thus far we have read (just off the top of my head): Russian Christmas Music (we'll do it at the Xmas concert as a tribute to Alfred Reed) Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral Hindemith's Symphony in Bb Jupiter from The Planets (we also have Mars in our folders) La Belle Helene Overture Third Suite by Jager (for an elementary school concert) Some Christmas Compilation (also for elementary schools) Probably more, but i can't remember all of it. I'm also looking forward to the NCBF and getting to perform with the Honor Band/Orchestra.
  9. I have no idea...isn't the deadline coming up? I'm still waiting on the packet as well. We should meet up once we're there, do a TxBands meet! Edit: from the email: Seems like the packets should be coming in this week, hopefully.
  10. So results are out for the BOA Honor Band (and Orchestra)...Are any Txbands.com people in? I'm in on Horn, I'm just waiting on the packet to see if I'm in the Band or Orchestra.
  11. I will admit, I haven't seen any other bands except Churchill, CP, Bowie, Cy-Falls (although from a terrible angle), and Westlake. You really can't base judgement on a band's performance on previous years. Cedar Park did get a new director this year, and that has affected them to a certain degree. They definitely aren't the Cedar Park of last year. I won't argue that Richland and Marcus have peaked, becuase I haven't seen their shows, but I can definitely agree, that some bands that all of a sudden shoot up into the top tier early on in the season, did peak that early. I'm not so sure about Richland, since I'm sure their show was designed to peak at Nats, and they have some incredible staff working there, but I could assume that about Marcus. As for The Colony being in finals...that probably won't happen over some of the other bands that are there. seeing as at BOA Houston, they were behind Klein and Clear Brook. Not to say they can't make a comeback, but I really don't think they have yet from their glory days of the 90s.
  12. Oh wow...Marcus and Westlake drew some really early performance slots Saturday morning. That could hurt Westlake in the running for finals, but I don't see it getting Marcus out of finals. Aside from that, most of the strong bands seem to be spread out, with the exception of the final block on Friday night, with Chuchill performing right after SFA, and then James Bowie and Cypress Falls performing later in that same block. It's gonna be one heck of a show! EDIT: I just noticed something...why doesn't Spring have any info listed?
  13. Alright, then let's get this back on topic. This regional is quite the tough one, and it's just as hard as Arlington. In terms of finalists, here's who I think is in for sure (alpha order): Brazoswood Cypress Falls James Bowie Marcus Richland Ronald Reagan Stephen F. Austin The Woodlands Westfield Winston Churchill Thank goodness this is a super regional, that's just 10 bands....Here are my bubble bands, and these are the ones that could be in or out. Cedar Park Clear Brook Coppell Creekview Haltom Klein Spring (haven't seen anything from them yet, this can DEFINITELY change) Westlake But IMO, this is what I see happening saturday night: 1-6: James Bowie Marcus Richland Ronald Reagan Stephen F. Austin Winston Churchill 7-10: Brazoswood Cypress Falls The Woodlands Westfield 11-14: Cedar Park Clear Brook Haltom Spring Music is up between Brazoswood, SFA Visual will probably be Reagan General Effect will probably be Reagan EDIT: Let me say that I am pretty sure I am wrong about these captions. Also, I'm quite sure that we will have some very interesting suprises at this regional, both in terms of caption winners, and placements. It's going to be a sweet final show for me
  14. My friend from UT called me about two hours ago, too bad it was too late for me to go (I was taking a nap and definitely wasn't ready to go.) I would have liked to have seen RR as well, as i have some friends there, and of course, getting to sit in front of the UT band would have been simply BADASS!
