  5. Musically, they rival Marcus. As for the visual, they'll be clean by State Finals. However, it wasn't as strong as it was in 2010. IMO, 2011 was dirtier around this time last year. GE will explode through the roof when they have all of the props. It's a brilliant show design.
  6. Just saw them perform at the AISD Band Jamboree. Very musical! Great visual!!! It's going to be another good one for them!
  7. This isn't entirely true. Yes, they are doing "The Planets" by Holst. However, the whole idea behind the show is to play the "Planets" themes with other music that SOUNDS like what Holst wrote. For example (and I'm not sure this is in the show), the theme from "Venus" would be played on top of Ravel's "Daphines and Chloe". I don't remember talking about "Pictures" when I met their Director, but I could have forgotten that part. "It's the Planets. But it isn't the Planets."
  8. Any updates? I'm surprised that there aren't that many announcements this year! Dripping Springs 2012 "Silence" ~ Music by Samuel Barber - School for Scandel - Adagio for Strings - Symphony No. 1 McCallum 2012 "Dance Movements" - Farandole ~ Bizet - "Overture" from Dancer in the Dark ~ Bjork - "Danza Finale" from Estancia ~ Ginastera - Medea's Dance of Vengeance ~ Barber - Bolero ~ Ravel Cedar Park 2012 "Celebracion" - La Fiesta Mexicana ~ Reed - Sensemaya ~ Revueltas - Adios Nonino ~ Piazzolla - Danzon No. 2 ~ Marquez
  9. I had Blue Stars over Crossmen. I wanted to put BK higher, but I know they'll have to fight for a higher placement since their show is so tough. Nice job to Madison for opening the gap on BAC and The Cavaliers!
  10. This might be a little off topic, but why do some high schools keep their marching shows secret until their first contest? I understand that getting arranging rights takes a while, and you wouldn't want to say your performing X, Y, and Z and then not... but if the HS tells its students, why can't everyone else know about it?
  11. The TMEA website has Brazoswood HS and Clear Lake HS advancing to State out of Area F.
  12. I agree with you. Additionally, I think that no matter how the Areas are re-drawn, someone is going to be unhappy and there will be a lot of quality bands competing against each other.
  13. Wow... didn't expect Argyle to not make it to State! I wonder how/if this will affect marching season.
  14. Area E - 5A CT Johnson - advance to state Westlake - advance to state Jersey Village Langham Creek Bowie Reagan O'Connor Brandeis
  15. The percussion solo is "Winter" from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
  16. Although I'm sure a lot of you guys know what you are talking about.... if you haven't seen ANY of these shows, especially the ones that may not be as well known, then you shouldn't be making predictions based upon the results of past years or whether or not a band has "state experience" or "momentum from past years". Just because X band got Y place in Z year, this is 2011 and several "unknown" bands have REALLY stepped it up this year! Back on track... We can all guess the finalists, but I really hope that the judges are ready for that third block in pre-lims with Connally, followed by Vista Ridge, followed by Hendrickson, with Vandegrift later on... that's a tough block! Finals isn't anyone's game, but it will come down to how well everyone performs. An off/bad run from even one band could drastically shift the results. I'm telling my kids that even though we may not make it, MAKE SURE that we make judges regret not being able to send us. If we can accomplish that, then I think we've done our job.
  17. To emphasize the competitiveness of Area D even more... Area D will (most likely) send 5 bands to state. The top 4 spots will be filled with Vandegrift, Cedar Park, Dripping Springs, and Lake Travis (in no particular order). However, the 5th spot is still "up for grabs". Competing for that spot are: -Hendrickson (5th at State 2005, 2007, and 2009), -Connally (2nd at state in 2007), -Vista Ridge (6th at state in 2007 and 22(?)nd at 5A state in 2008), -McCallum (consistent area finalist), -LBJ (12th at state in 2009), -Hays (10th at state in 2009), and who knows who else may have a really strong year this year. Basically, 6 bands are competing for that 5th spot in Area D. On another note, it's safe to make the assumption that any band making Area D finals has a VERY strong chance to make State finals (should they have the opportunity). It's crazy how much talent is in this Area, and I really hope the judges (including the Hebron head director and the Argyle head director) are really ready to make some hard/tough calls next Saturday.
  18. I saw Bowie at the A.I.S.D. band jamboree last week. The show is absolutely beautiful and they'll continue to do very well.
  19. Oh... woops haha. I was going off of having Area Contests the 4th Saturday in October, and then a week off, and then the next week would be State. But that schedule is going to be really hectic for any 4A band going to Grand Nats, that's for sure!
