  1. Two years ago the student price did not include college students. Pretty lame, I know.
  2. Thinking back to my marching band days, I always preferred performing in an open air stadium due to the fact that our band's sound was so much crisper and cleaner. That being said, I think the Alamodome is currently the best venue for the State Contest. After the disastrous weather in Waco during State '02, I think it was a wise decision to move the contest to the Alamodome.
  3. http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=...videoid=6424010 Try that. Hopefully it will work for you.
  4. I think I am the only one here who doesn't know about Crockett 1993. Someone care to enlighten me?
  5. I really enjoyed this contest--all the bands performed extremely well. One of my favorite bands of the night was Friendswood. I thought they would have placed a little bit higher, but there was some stiff competition from the other bands. After hearing about BOA Houston, I was expecting Westfield's show to be less than perfect, but I enjoyed it. They must have really done a lot of work in a weeks time. They aren't the same Westfield I knew in high school, but different is not always bad.
  6. I heard a rumor that State UIL wasn't going to be in the Alamodome this year. Is that true?
  7. The worst contest for injuries for my band as a whole was State 2002. We came off that field bruised and battered. We had a couple of dislocated shoulders, fractured wrists, twisted ankles, and a broken leg. I'm surprised no one suffered from hypothermia. Our instruments didn't fare to well either, but at least we didn't have the "Taco Tuba". And I am pretty sure the drycleaners hated us after having to clean off all the mud on our uniforms. My worst injury happened my senior year, less than a week before State 2004. For the woodwinds, one of our sets was to turn toward the end zones and jazz run, and abruptly stop facing the audience. The jazz run wasn't hard--it was the foot maneuvering for the last step to face the crowd. During the middle of practice, we were working on this set, and on the last step, my left foot rolled over and I could feel something pop. Somehow, I hobbled off the field and into the band hall. The loving band moms gave me some ice, but it barely did anything--my foot started swelling immediately. For the next couple of days I was totally useless. My foot swelled to almost twice its normal size and turned black and blue. I couldn't put any pressure on it, so I walked with crutches. I wanted to march the 3rd day after I hurt myself, but my band director wouldn't let me--he wanted me to wait as long as possible before getting back on the field so I wouldn't reinjure myself. I was so mad at myself--I had gone my entire marching career without a major injury, and then my senior year before state, I do this to myself. It was so hard to sit on the sidelines and watch the band rehearse--I had never wanted to march more in my life. I ended up at the hospital for xrays because my foot wasn't getting any better. It turned out that it was just a major sprain, but the doctors told me I shouldn't march on it for at least 2 weeks. There was no way I wasn't going to march at state, so I purchased the best ankle brace I could find, managed to stick my swollen foot into it and my marching shoe, and marched my final contest. Did it hurt? You bet. Do I regret marching? Heck no. My ankle still swells up every once in the while, especially when the weather changes. At least now I know when it is going to get cold outside.

  9. I am looking for a recording of Maslanka's Symphony No.4. Can anyone help me out? I would really appreciate it.
  10. These are just a few of my favorites: Lincolnshire Posy--Grainger. I think this is one of the best pieces out there--but that's just my opinion. J'ai ete au bal--Grantham. Fun song--I never get tired of listening to it. Dance Movements--Sparke. I think this is an all around great piece--I absolutely love it. October--Whitacre. It may not be technical, but it is one of the most emotional songs that I have ever played--it is completely gorgeous. Profanation--Bernstein. I don't really quite know why I like this song....I just do.
  11. Does anyone know where I could find a Bach Stradivarius Mount Vernon Trumpet case? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  12. We have roughly 320-330 kids in our band (including guard). This year I think we are marching around 250. Then there is the pit and the other 60-70 kids who don't march at contests but march at football games. We had a small entering freshman class this year, but thats ok. The band is still pretty big--5A.
