  1. ???? More like people need to have basic manners and stop being ignorant and rude. their band and color guard also gave us dirty looks as we filed past. no other school in the area behaves like this. Don't mess with Texas....and their High School Marching Bands...
  2. the marching band thing is completely true. our band has more grade issues after the end of marching season with free afternoons than during, with the daily practices and weekly contests.
  3. that is false. our hats look fine on most people. we have some shorter people in the band, maybe 4'6" or so (idk) and they look normal in the hats. I can see where that idea can come from though, since the plume is about a foot long. I'll get back to you on this after this next football game.
  4. lost to DP.... 35-30 we returned the first kickoff about 60-70 yds and then randomly dropped it without getting touched. we played kind of sloppy, but the refs were completely on Deer Park's side, there were upwards to 8 horrible calls. 7-2, gonna play Baytown Lee in playoffs, round 1. **DP's fans (i hope they were just their students and not the adults also) are classless trash (the band parents are nice though, they applauded our performance)** as our pit was going to set up, they were spat at by the DP crowd. as we walked to our off-field setup for halftime, the crowd threw rocks, coins and other bits of trash at our band (i believe a pencil was thrown at a tuba). luckily our school is above that and we did not do anything to incite a riot. then during our performance, the student section booed and threw more coins. nobody was hit during the show though. the night before, DP students slashed some tires at the JV game and it was rumored that they were planning to break windows, mirros and slash tires during the game. cops were patrolling everywhere. I also heard that DP people dropped a dead bulldog in front of LaPorte HS. some people.... good luck to Humble, we need to be avenged....haha
  5. thanks...haha at one contest last year, some random people asked if we were the band with the cool hats
  6. at Memorial, the pit had always been made up of freshman percussion, oboe players, and a couple of people who cannot march for various reasons (medical, whatever). we do get very frustrated with our pit because the overwhelming majority are freshman percussion. early in the season, the pit stays inside and starts work on the music as the band is working on marching fundamentals. without a whole lot of upperclassmen for peer pressure of excellence, the freshman pit kids often just mess around. subsequently, they often take their own tempos, ignoring the rest of the world. luckily, they usually get it together before the major performances. to answer the original post's question, no pit kids are not the "un-talented kids" However, depending on differing band programs, this is an understandable assumption. It really depends on the band, the school, the district, the feeders, and the community. Many bands don't have the luxury of making kids tryout for marching band and still have hundreds of kids leftover.
  7. did you guys beat that band? that'd be a real feel-good quiet victory, even if you don't be rude and rub it in.
  8. Pasadena Memorial's uniforms are the best, period.....
  9. haha, i was kidding about the soaking in orange soda. Oboes have these cups of water, that attach to stands, to soak reeds in for quick changing out just in case, or between songs, etc. Since we were on the subject of flavored reeds...... no, soaking a clarinet reed in orange soda does not put a zing in your sound and should not be tested out, as the sugar would all go into your instrument and possibly damage it somehow. Brevity is the soul of wit.
  10. I think it's completely absurd. Band teaches kids about responsibility and hard work. Practice schedules are announced far in advanced (summer band or even as early as spring camp), so people know what they are getting in to. In life, employers and colleges will not separate your work load, just because you complain that it's too much. Employers can hire other people and the colleges already have your money. Of course, it's understandable that Freshman parents would freak out, since the transition to HS is sometimes not so easy. However, people need to stop complaining and deal with it. If the parents don't want their child's grades to suffer, blaming band, then quit band. Band is varsity, and only needs people committed to being here. I guess in that district, if you are in band, then you must march?? Because we have people in band who are in cheer or athletics and choose not to march, but are still in band class and will play concert season. I, my friends, and most of the people here are taking/have taken, full AP/IB course loads and maintain strong A averages while going through the long practices both for band and for athletics. The class of '06 had the #2 of their class (by .001 pts from #1), the class of '07 had the valedictorian, and I'm the current guy at #1 for '08. All three of us marched all four years, take/took the hardest classes, and still balance our lives with other organizations and social stuff. Kids these days need to learn the meaning of work ethic. Good luck to you guys who go to that district and hope everything works out. just my $0.02
  11. dang. 7-1 lost to North Shore 52-31. it was quite win-able, but we just turned over the ball too many times. our QB lost a fumble on the first play of the game. at the half, we were trailing by a TD (would have been leading by a TD if the fumble did not occur). later, we pulled within 4, but the D was sluggish, and let NS run all over them. then, Dylan (QB) threw an INT that was taken to the house. to make it 52-31. the NS starters played the entire game, the first time that's happened this season....haha the NS players were HUGE. standing up next to our guys, they must have been an average 6 inches taller. still, it was a really good game. the biggest crowd in Memorial Stadium history. it was our senior night too, last home game of the season. tears were shed.
  12. scores have been posted online (full recap) Prelims = http://www.shsu.edu/music/files/events/mar...msAggregate.pdf Finals = http://www.shsu.edu/music/files/events/mar...nalsScoring.pdf
  13. Pasadena Memorial is undefeated, 7-0. the Friday before SHSU was our Homecoming game where we beat the Pasadena HS Eagles, 44-0. This Thursday, we play against North Shore, after which only one school will emerge still undefeated. also, we rose in the power rankings, up to #9 in the Houston Area. We are the Game of the Week on Chron.com, to be called on 790AM radio. we're really excited about this season, with the band's success and now the football as well.
  14. oh...haha, i'm sorry. Mr. Burke always spoke like you did, so I guess we all just thought that.
  15. i need to get mine up to tempo. right now, my first etude is around 7-10 under tempo, the second one is about 20 under my target tempo which is about 10 over the recommended tempo, and the slow one is done save two measures of weird rhythm that i can't get my mind around for some odd reason.
  16. {Pasadena Memorial} yeah...our drill designer marched with the Cavs through both Frameworks and Spincycle, so lots of his work has such influences. our director wanted us to be a corp-style band and didn't want bucket hats, so the cavalier hats are pretty awesome and we go for a corp-type marching style. we never stop moving. not sure what happened to the sound at Finals, when we were watching the Finals preview video, Langham was performing, so the volume was turned off. we had a major rub during the last movement...the pit was a full measure ahead somehow. afterward, we were feeling pretty down, especially when we got back to the stadium, all the other bands seemed to have so much support in comparison. we only march 71 winds and 11 drumline, compared to the 3As that must have had around 300 people....haha regarding the visuals comment: yes, there were a couple of spots where we could have had more visuals, but we just didn't have time. we did a lot of subtle things with hats, horns...etc, but we never have a huge hold to do anything spectacular. the longest hold without moving was 6 counts. all-in-all, it was a successful season. the class of 08 is the first class at the school to wear the band uniform all four years, and we are also the first class to win our class at SHSU. no regrets. ** I loved Duncanville's music. the clarinet bumblebee solo must have been a lot of fun to play. the Festive Overture could have been soo much better if the tempo was closer to that of a concert performance, and if it included the clarinet and flute runs that followed the trumpet runs. would have been cool if Deer Park's colorguard tossed baseball bats instead of rifles...haha (noticed that the Astros did not have a flag) tomball's show was pretty fun. Falls' show was creepy but cool. Cedar Park deserved the win, the show was ultra happy. the child-type theme was done well, since that theme always has the potential to look annoyingly so.
  17. dang, we had a bad run at Finals. tough crowd too. we were the smallest band, excluding the 1A, and the crowd did not give us any love at all...sigh ended up 8th though, we could have gotten higher placement if all pistons were firing and if we had the crowd support
  18. good luck to all. report time is 7am for us, so I probably won't be able to see a response. are we doing a meetme event for this??
  19. the Simpson guy who runs a cool podcast.
  20. according to their website, Legacy is not going...?? http://www.legacybroncoband.com/ the Woodlands were never scheduled to go this year I don't believe.
  21. the only people who call me that are other people in top band, in which case they are the same.
  22. i didn't get to see them march their show, but the Brazoswood DMs did part of Soulja Boy for their salute at the LSP.
  23. = not sure if they have any rules against recordings, i think not but don't quote me on that. = http://www.shsu.edu/music/files/events/mar...Information.pdf that link is for spectator info for prices and etc. = heck yeah.
