BOA General Effect Sheets
mbui replied to percussioninstructor's topic in Drill Writers, Arrangers, and Composers Corner
My thoughts in a nutshell. I absolutely agree with everything that you said. -
So Maverick fans, How about them Celtics? Boston sweeps the Texas triangle of Houston, San Antonio, & Dallas. That's impressive. And, the Mavericks have yet to beat a team with a winning record since the Jason Kidd trade.
-
Wow, that Rockets/Lakers game was incredible.
-
This streak is going to end eventually and most likely this week. But as a die-hard Rockets fan, I haven't felt this way since the championship years in 1994 & 1995. It's a surreal feeling to be witnessing history. 21 games in a row. I still can't believe it. Sunday's game against the Lakers will be the biggest regular season game in Rockets history since the 1990s. I can't wait.

Videos from this year

I wish I got to see this show in person. Four of my favorite songs/pieces (Whitacre's Lux Aurumque and Imogen Heap's Let Go, Hide and Seek, and The Moment I Said It) all in one show = fantastic. -
Never say never. USSBA just added the South Texas Regional today. It's set for October 4th in La Joya.
-
I met up with the YEA staff at TMEA the other day and talked to them about the location for the State Championships. Spring ISD's George Stadium will most likely be the site for USSBA State.
-
Actually, the 1984 Portland Trailblazers take the cake when they passed up Michael Jordan in the draft.

The NBA announced yesterday that Stackhouse will not be allowed to go back to the Mavericks if he is traded and then waived by the Nets. All of this is hilarious.
-
I'm a die hard Rockets fan and this Mavericks trade kind of makes me happy. They gave up way too much. However, Jerry Stackhouse's contract is most likely going to be bought out by New Jersey. Which means, he'll become a free agent but must wait a month before resigning again with the Mavericks. I didn't think the point guard position was a weakness for the Mavericks anyways. Trading a young talented point guard in Devin Harris (along with all of those draft picks) for an old veteran? Jason Kidd is a good player. No doubt. He's a great passer, has experience, and should be a great leader for team with his presence. However, he is a horrible shooter for a point guard. If you're looking for automatic points, he's not one of those guys that's going to rack up 15 points in a row. Kidd is only shooting 35% from the field. And, who's going to defend all the big men in the West like Yao, Duncan, Shaq, Bynum, and Chandler? With Diop gone, there's no inside presence in the paint for the Mavs besides Dampier. And we all know he can't play the entire 48 minutes. This is the same Dallas team that won 67 games in the regular season last year. I still think they're all hung up on what happened in the playoffs. The Mavs are in a desperate win now mode. But, what's going to happen 3-4 years from now when Kidd is close to retirement? Where's Devin when you need him? The Western Conference is going to be FANTASTIC one to watch though. First and ninth place are only separated by five games which is unheard of. As of right now the West looks like this: 1. *36-15 - Phoenix 2. *35-15 - New Orleans 3. 34-17 - Dallas 4. *33-19 - Utah 5. 34-17 - L.A. Lakers 6. 33-17 - San Antonio 7. 32-19 - Denver 8. 31-20 - Golden State 8. 31-20 - Houston * - Division leaders

I'm not a Dallas sports fan but.... I think the Cowboys just played a really hot team (NY Giants). Just like what Golden State was to the Mavericks last year.

It just doesn't have to deal with solos or staging with the drill. It's about creating a NEW sound too. Perfect examples: Lassiter HS, GA 2002 Westfield HS, TX 2003 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrk-J7M0s6M Lassiter & Westfield both mic'ed concert french horns at the end of the show to create a unique sound for their french horn feature. Also, L.D. Bell in 2006 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay2k9mX0dXE) mic'ed their trumpet soloist with a vocoder, a sound/speech analyzer and synthesizer, at the beginning of the show (and the voices during and at the end) to create an eerie and haunting sound. It fit the show perfectly. The Woodlands also used a vocoder in 2006 for their voices during Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek. Imogen performs the version of Hide and Seek through a vocoder as well. I think that so much can be done with brass and percussion instruments with the help of electronics. I know it's not a pure or an acoustic sound and it's not "traditional" drum corps, but there are a ton of untapped ideas that have yet to surface in DCI. Marching band passed up drum corps in innovation and pushing the envelope a long time ago. Electronics doesn't "rob" one of a musical experience. Be it drum corps, marching band, jazz, rock, pop, rap, techno, R&B, and etc. The synthesizer players at Ronald Reagan from 2000-2005 will beg to differ about the musical experience argument. They were pure musicians. The emotion that I get when I hear the Santa Clara Vanguard rip out Adagio for Strings is the same emotion that I get when I hear the beginning of Ronald Reagan's beautiful intro from 2005. It's indescribable. Emotional music is emotional music. Good music is good music. No matter what form its in.
-
Amplification of brass instruments and the addition of electronics means new instrumentation for the front ensemble and new sounds/ideas for drum corps. A lot of shows in drum corps have been stagnant as of late and have lost me on an emotional level. Most will disagree but I think this is great news for drum corps.

About voiceovers....Me or WestCoastCorpsFan? I don't think I've ever brought up voiceovers. I like voiceovers. But, not in an excessive and poor manner. Winston Churchill's was nowhere close to excessive. It was tasteful and appropriate to me.

The marching activity is MORE than marching the entire 8-11 minutes, playing music, and etc. It's about being creative, being effective, and more importantly, being remembered. You can be the most amazing group when it comes to the technical parts of music and marching, but if it's not an effective show and it seems like that the show is "just there"..... than you're not going to be remembered. God forbid that no one has ever stood still during a ballad before. Every band (and drum corps) does it. Aren't you supposed to stand still during the impact point of the ballad anyways?

Good to see someone else has been is on this as well. I've voted every round for UofH. Right now, Arkansas' cheerleader is up by 8%.
