  1. Well, bea, you gotta look at the assumptions that xraidercutiex was making. I personally have to disagree, as well. ----- A "band that awesome" could only be practicing more than 8 hours. Marcus is amazing, and I'm fairly sure they follow the 8-hour rule, since they are going to State this year. Reagan placed ahead of Westfield at BOA Houston, and Reagan is a UIL band. Meaning 8 hours. So implying that a good band "must" be practicing over 8 hours a week isn't always true. ----- The second sentence is an assumption that if Westfield were to participate in UIL, under UIL rules, they "could probably easily take it". That's not true either, because Westfield has placed under other bands at BOA contests, including ones that do participate in UIL. ----- Sometimes I get this impression that BOA supporters underrate the level of competition at UIL's All-State contest. I hope that I'm just misreading things, because UIL is rather... rough. Besides, I have to agree with Mrs. Ian. Asking kids to put more than the-already-incredible-amount of 8 hours a week + games + contests is just too much. They're not in high school for marching band. They're in high school to be in high school. If a student is really that into marching, then he/she should consider joining a Drum and Bugle Corps. I hope I didn't come across negatively. *edited*
  2. /gets out a fire extinguisher... But seriously, there's no need to be highly-flammable on a forum. Think through it and post without insulting people. That's not a lot to ask, and I'm not even the one asking it (Dese guys are). Maybe he was a bit flamboyant, but if he wants to be, that's his choice. Just as it is yours to not like it. However, there's really no need to say he's a "complete flamer".
  3. Even if they did do a third part, I doubt they'd drop out of finals. They're too good (IMHO). I just wanna see what they eventually come out with. /sits impatiently
  4. When the moderator says to cool it, that means cool it... not to mention that ignoring a moderator and fanning more flames doesn't do much besides hurt your rep as posters.
  5. Interesting. Creative. I like it. I'm now very interested in what the Cadets are gonna bring out this coming season.
  6. Matt Atkinson was my band director my freshman year of HS. =) He's so awesome. 02-06 Currently in: UNT Green Brigade.
  7. Amen to that part, Skippy. But I was talking about the show in general.
  8. Well, the thing is, what does one mean by "best"? If you're asking more of how pleasing/cool the show was... then Star '93 probably isn't the choice. Abstract is kind of an understatement. It's not something you can exactly groove to. It was clean though. Very. Clean. Being 0.1 behind Cadets doesn't mean much. That's like a left hand diddle in the battery. And if I'm not mistaken, the mellophone line got a 100 at I&E that year.
  9. Ahahaha, that's how he said it to me.
  10. The subtitle to the show, from the mouth of Nicholas E. Williams (Brass Caption at SCV), is "Eureka: The Music of Ravel and Respighi"
  11. Amen to my HS's drum room. Kinda small, but the cubby stuff to the eating rule is the same. =X The annex where we store drums at UNT is pretty clean though.
  12. Reagan's show was pretty impressive. And cleaner than the rest of the shows by a bit of a margin, in my opinion. My favorite shows were (in rank order) RR, Westfield, Brazoswood, CB (Biased ) and CyFalls. Not saying I didn't like the others though.
  13. I seem to keep listening to the Madison Scouts + Alumni singing "You'll Never Walk Alone".
  14. Compatibility issues in a few (not often) cases. That and there are still an extremely large number of people who know only qwerty and choose not to re-learn. That or their current systems have only qwerty compatibility. Or people like me have a laptop with qwerty and are too lazy to get a dvorak setup. How does the time pass so fast when you practice? I sat down, started playing, looked up, and two hours had passed by...
  15. Nope, my band is funded by the Wind Studies department. Of course, my HS band didn't sell popcorn as a fundraiser either. Why do I drink so many soft drinks when I should be drinking water? And how do I make it through so many activities in the heat without ever falling to heat exhaustion?
  16. I either found myself playing a video game, reading a book, or participating in very random activities with other band kids; tennis, wandering around town, etc. Now, I can't really talk at all; music IS life now. =) Of course, I skip practicing now and then to watch a movie or something.
  17. "Eureka: The Music of Ravel and Respighi"
  18. Well; he WAS my director. I graduated and am at UNT working on a BM in Music Education now. Just to be sure... We're talking about Holliday, 2A state marching champions in 1999 and 2001, and the same that attended the Midwest Clinic in 03, right? Haha, I think I answered my own question... /slap self Stan Mauldin and Mike Ary are the names. Both are at my old high school and have been doing very well, especially considering they came from a school as small as Holliday. Isn't it a 2A school? /shrug Perhaps I didn't give Mike enough credit; he does as much as Mr. Mauldin... My old HS was... not very good freshman year. Mr. Mauldin came sophomore, Mr. Ary the next year. Percussion directors had switched early in the Sophomore year season. It got a lot better... way better. In fact, they just won the De Soto Marching Festival. =)
  19. A small marching band is... a small marching band. Just that. Just because you don't have 150+ members doesn't mean you're not worth anything. Those of us who went, or currently do go to, 5A schools are not worth any more than you guys are. There ARE bad 5A schools out there... The biggest difference that I see between the sizes has already been mentioned; resources. Being 5A doesn't mean anything but more resources, and having those doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have a good show. It just means you can make the show a little flashier compared to what you could do without the gimmicks. On an interesting side note: my HS head band director used to be the Director of Bands at Holliday.
