  1. I believe the moment Leander and Vandegrift went to 6A, 5As fate was sealed, Cedar Park all the way. As for 3A you've got your usuals Whitesboro, Cameron and a strong Mineola group, but look out for Jourdanton who just came off of a TMEA State Honor band title. 2A, you have the war between Sundown and New Deal, but keep an eye out for Kerens. 1A is practically anyone's game.

I agree. Cedar Park is going to kill it this year.

  2. As a DFW native, I'm changing my predictions slightly now that we've seen some things (also to revive some discussion in this thread hopefully):

    1. Flomo: This contest is theirs to lose. From what we've seen the past few years from them, especially last year, they will be the band to beat, bar none, at this contest. I could definitely see a situation where Marcus or Hebron edges them out, but honestly, Flomo has a great chance of winning it all.

    2. Marcus: They usually seem to be cleaner than Hebron early season, and being a Grand Nats season for them, they're going to be going hard this year. Also, they'll be out for blood after state last year. They have such a fantastically consistent program, but so does Hebron, and Hebron could definitely grab the silver from them. But, I think Marcus is going to be in second.

    3. Hebron: They're amazing. Nothing much else to say. The three LISD powerhouses could switch up 1-3 between themselves, but in my opinion, this is the most likely matchup.

    4. Keller: I'm gonna place Keller a little higher than others have been here. I think their program, over the past two years especially, has been achieving amazing things. Last year was one of my favorite shows of all time, and if they continue to improve off it, they'll be a total powerhouse soon.

    5. Bell: Last year was great for them. They'll be back very strong once again. I can totally see them and Keller switching, but I don't think they're quite ready to break into the top 3 again. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us this year. Immortal and last year's show (can't remember the name.... beyond the veil?) were just fantastic.

    6. Coppell: I want them to be higher and get back to their old levels of success, similar to Bell's rising back up after a hiccup year. I think this year could go very well for them. They're one of the few bands that releases videos from every performance, including games, and they just look.... fun. I don't think they'll beat Bell, but 6th or 7th seems to be a very realistic spot.

7: Wakeland: Fantastic program that had a hiccup last year and missed finals here by 1 spot. And what was that hiccup? Oh, just their entire staff changing. And they still had a fantastic season. Can't wait to see what they can do now that they've settled a little.

8: Keller Central: They always do really well at early season BOA contests. Great concepts, fun shows, and a successful program.

9: Waxahachie: They're off some people's radars, but they'll be making for a top 5 bid at 5A state now that some of the Leander schools have moved up to 6A. They've been doing great stuff the past few years, I don't think this year will be any different.

10(?): Vista Ridge: Amazing band who is facing a horrible performance time, as well as travel. If they had a better performance time, I could see them being higher- actually, they're such an awesome group I can still them being higher than 10. But I really do feel bad for those kids.

10(?): Duncanville: A great, consistently successful band. The only obstacle they face is a brutal performance slot, which can just destroy some bands. Also, this is their first BOA contest in a long time, which doesn't always work out well. I can see them sneaking in to finals, but to be honest, it'll be tough to get ahead of some of these other groups.

I agree with your point on Vista. They're a good program and I always love their shows, but I wonder if their performance time is going to meddle with their full potential. Overall really strong predictions.

  3. So we might be low on budget, because we would probably be doing the Austin mcallen, and SA competitions on top of UIL regions and likely area, and rocket review which we do every year and then either Yamaha cup or texas marching classic. That would be a total of seven competitions, and that would would be the most we have done in a long time if not ever.

Would love to see you guys at TMC :)

I agree totally except Cedar Ridge. We're coming along pretty well.

  5. I know Leander students also have to audition for primary marching spots since they have so many kids entering the band program.  I'm sure that's the case for most 5A and 6A bands.  Or do most of them march every student?  Leander has what they call an X-box for students not getting primary marching spots and those kiddos either handle props or they march in a separate "box" on the field during football games only.  Is that pretty common for most Texas bands?

I am a member of a 6A band. We do not have "the box" but alternates do handle props. We hold weekly "challenges" for the spot, where there is a marching and playing audition to have the spot for the game or contest that week. Near the end of the season the challenges die down and roles become more defined.

Looking like a great competition so far! Excited to watch the livestream as I can't make it down :(

  7. I'm going to put some predictions out there. These are based on the little I've seen from these groups, plus some stuff thrown in for fun (predictions are more fun if they're bold right?)

I haven't seen much of CTJ's show despite living so close, they're my biggest wild card right now. Leander and Vandegrift are VERY hard to decide between. If I had to pick right now, I'd say Leander wins Music, Vandy wins Visual. For funsies let's say CTJ takes General Effect. Those three in any order you please. Round Rock edges out Cedar Park for fourth, Bowie takes 6th above Hendrickson. Churchill and Vista Ridge fight for 8th, but Vista gets it. I feel like 10th may be a surprise, though it may just be Cedar Ridge again. I'll put Westlake there and I'm gonna throw Tom Glenn in the mix for potential finalists.

    1. Vandegrift

    2. CTJ

I agree with what you've got here. Historically all of these bands have performed really well at BOA Austin. Every year it gets a little more competitive. I do think Cedar Ridge has the potential to edge out Westlake, or even Churchill if they have a really good prelims performance. They're starting to look up.

I'm also feeling CTJ this year. I think they'll beat out Vandegrift this year. Vandy's show is interesting, but I just love CTJ's.

However, I'm not so sure about the Hendrickson ranking. They definitely belong in finals as they're quite good, but not as high as you placed them.

But like you said, what fun is predictions if they're not a little bold :)

  8. I think Hendrickson H.S. has a good shot at those last 4-5 places with any of those bands, and based on what Hebron H.S. does with their music, I would have moved them above Leander H.S., but honestly this competition is too hard to predict accurately. I wish they had multiple prelims rounds like they do at grand nats, as this competition is arguably just as competitive if not more. If nothing else, that additional round would help prove consistency

I agree. I've seen most of the 2016 shows from these schools and they're all so good.

  9. My Predictions

    1. Leander Hs

    2. Claudia T. Johnson Hs

    3. Vandegrift Hs

    4. Round Rock Hs

    5. Cedar Park Hs

    6. Bowie Hs

    7. Winston Churchill Hs

    8. Westlake Hs

    9. Hendrickson Hs

    10. Vista Ridge/ Cedar Ridge

    Why?

    1. Leander was on fire last year placing in finals at Grand Nats last year. They also have been improving every year and I believe that this year will really be big for them and I can't wait to see what they do. I mean their whole brass section is coming along really well.

    2. CTJ had a rough start placing 3rd last year at boa Austin, which is not where they want to be but I think with a lot of new faces and talents, they can really strive and b a front runner this year. They have such great guard members who always perform with great emotion.

    3. Coming off of a 1st place finish at finals last year and a good senior class last year, I think Vandy will generate a lot of good energy to keep this going. There percussion have been extraordinary this year from videos and I expect good things. with such a huge and great senior class last year I wonder how they are filling in those spots?

    4. Round Rock High school had a kinda slow year last year but they are expected to compete in Grand Nats this year so I'm assuming for a great first show at boa Austin this year and their guard have gotten really good in the last year or two.

    5. Cedar Park is coming off from an amazing show that placed them in finals of grand Nats last year and they have been improving on their sounds and I think it will really come along this year. I'm hoping for. A great show from the students and a great crowd of fans. Not to mention their percussion is amazing.

    6. Bowie High schools pop show last year was so intriguing and it placed them into semi finals at last years grand Nats. I can't wait to see there show this year and their guard is world renowned and perform at one of the highest levels.

    7. Winston Churchill band went to every single Texas regional last year expept for McAllen and they placed in finals every time. That is huge for a band in arguably the toughest state for marching band. They are also expected to perform at grand Nats this year and I'm exited to see their show this year.

    8. Westlake High School is one of only 15 schools across the nation to receive the sudlers flag and the sudlers shield by the John Phillips Sousa foundation. That is an amazing award and they made finals last year at boa Austin beating consistent schools such as Cedar ridge, Dripping Springs, and even beat Hendrickson during prelims. They have an amazing group of front ensemble players and battery players this year. Not to mention they beat amazing bands such as Vandegrift, Leander, and vista ridge for marching at area. I exited to see what they have to bring to the field this year.

    9. Hendrickson is one of those schools that is expected to make finals most every time because of their excellence in music ability. They often perform with high levels of energy and they have really good battery this year that I'm real exited to see a boa this this year.

    10. Now I couldn't decide between vista and cedar ridge because they have always been real close with each other during prelims and finals. It really depends on how fast each band is moving no how clean their drill can be. Vista always has an amazing low brass section and cedar ridge is always performing with high energy and beautiful ballads. So I'm still undecided at the moment.

That is my rundown this year. In my opinion of course :)

I totally agree with CTJ. They stumbled in the beginning of the season, but started to pick themselves up to totally rock the rest of the season.

Unpopular opinion, but I didn't really feel Hendrickson. They were very good, I just was not a fan of the show.

With Vista and Cedar Ridge, you're also very right. They both grew into their shows and CR ended up doing very well at State UIL (I can't say the same for CTJ, haha). I loved VR's theme and their music. A show I could watch over and over.

Overall, I think your predictions are pretty accurate to how BOA Austin will play out. I'm excited!
