  1. I was very impressed with Dawson this year and thought they could have beat Pearland at Area (after seeing their prelims performances). But I’m not a judge, so who knows?
  2. Definitely - everyone felt terrible for them. But it has definitely happened before, and UIL definitely has rules for that (I don’t *think* those have changed, although they have changed/added a rule about being Area Champion in the last few years).
  3. There was a three way tie for fourth in Area E only four years ago. UIL has rules for how to break the tie and the winner of the tie breaker got the fourth state spot (we only sent four that year). It was pretty awful for the other two bands. ☹️ https://www.uiltexas.org/music/marching-band/marching-band-scoring-and-advancement-procedure#:~:text=A 3-way or 4,an actual UIL state finals.
  4. Did Lake have a bad run? That seems like a substantial drop from prelims for them.
  5. I’m not sure what you saw differently than me, but I’ve seen all but the first three performances and would be shocked if Brook didn’t make finals.
  6. Umm, Brook hasn’t performed yet.
  7. Weather continues to look bad in the Houston area Saturday. And these areas had pretty bad weather last year and I suspect are trying to avoid a repeat of that.
  8. I get what you’re saying. Lake didn’t get to go to state last year because there were 29 bands at Area instead of 30, and someone’s going to be in that position this year. ☹️ It stinks, and it would be nice to see them make State sometime. It’s just that when you single out one group you want to do less well, it’s just not very nice. My son went to a high school in this Area and said there were multiple instances where kids from another school’s band in this Area (I’m not naming schools) were trash talking them at a contest, and I just really hate to see this kind of poor sportsmanship. (In fairness, I don’t know if the offending school’s students did this to kids from other bands or not.) I just feel like we should want every group to do as well as possible.
  9. Hmm, maybe they didn’t have two awards to give out then? Still odd not to announce it.
  10. So they gave captions for music, percussion, and auxiliary, but not visual? Or they forgot to announce visual? Odd.
  11. Wanting a school that’s come close to making state to make it is fine, but specifically calling out a school you’d like to see them beat seems a little mean spirited, imho.
  12. Does anyone have more results for this competition? I can’t find them anywhere.
  13. Thanks! This is close by and I’d consider going, but this organization doesn’t seem to post much of anything.
  14. I’m amazed at the people I see walking up the stairs during performances, etc. We went to a region contest and two ladies were sitting there *talking* during a performance - like, would they want someone to do that when their band was on? Craziness. And yes, I’ve definitely also seen people really not cheer for other bands to where it seemed deliberate - so strange. I understand being particularly enthusiastic about your kid’s group, but you cheer for everyone. But I agree with you - I watch as many shows as I can because *I enjoy watching the bands*! If I’m already here, paying to get in, I’m not just watching our school, and yes, I’m going to react in whatever way I do. 😁
  15. Thank you for posting this - I was not aware this was in there. I gotta say, though, I’ve gone to a lot of marching contests, and I try to watch as many bands as I can when I’m there. There’s no doubt that the hometown supporters cheering can affect the way the whole audience reacts, and I think it would be very hard to separate out what’s genuine in this context. I’ve seen many of these groups of parents not even really paying attention when other bands perform, which I find mystifying. My kids went to a more mixed school socioeconomically where some of the parents were much less involved (and didn’t attend contests that were, say, across town) and the very involved parents were often busy pushing equipment, etc. They’re a successful band, but they don’t have a big group of parents sitting together cheering as much as some others. It’s just been my experience watching lots of different bands that this can affect the overall audience reaction. So I find it a fairly bizarre thing to include in judging.
  16. That would be really wonderful! Isn’t Region 13 today?
  17. Are the judges actually gauging audience reaction? If so, that would explain some of the tendency for early performance times to do less well - there’s just much less audience, ergo much less audience reaction.
  18. Pretty sure the max would be 30, if every band received a I at region. Would be nice, but probably unlikely.
  19. Friendswood got a I - not sure about Texas City. (I didn’t hear the first set of announcements, and my husband didn’t pay much attention and only remembered certain results.) No idea why the region has posted most of the results but not all. Brazoswood isn’t posted, either, but was announced as a I last night.
  20. All ten 6A bands in Region 17 received I ratings yesterday evening.
  21. It definitely used to happen when there were only seven areas. Area F definitely sent six at some point, and one year, Area E (which was huge at the time) sent eight.
  22. I’m not sure what the purpose of this post is. But I feel like we can acknowledge that some areas are especially competitive to make state in without dismissing the accomplishments of bands from other areas.
