  1. There was a lot of hype last year for LD Bell's 2006 show "The Remaining", which has garnered a respectable 24,000+ views on Youtube over the past year it was an incredible show and this board was loaded with info on them all throughout the season. Haven't seen much of that this year though with "TranSENDents" (or however the entendre is utilized there )....for those who have seen it; is it just not as good (or as entertaining) of a show as last year? Does it not have the element that it's going to need to take win it all for Texas at Nationals? Will this show Remain in the shadows of the more well established bands for the year, or will it make the Ascent to Transcendence and take it home?
  2. lol, "This is Marching band, not TECHNO BAND!" ....as a friend of mine once put it. He doesn't like electronics on the field . Techno bands......first thing that comes to mind with that is Westfield 2004 with their "Techno" movement in "The Game Within". You also can't forget Hebron 2006 in "Music From All Directions" with their selection "Speed Over Beethoven" from DDR.
  3. Aww, Legacy isn't going? A shame, I was looking forward to their show.... At least I get to see the 3:45+ block....I'm a parking monitor for the equipment trucks from 1-3:45, so I'll have to bee-line it into the stadium to catch Falls at 3:45.... Man.....the Area C, Area D and Area F (? I think Langham's from F) champions from last year all gathered in a non-BOA/Non-UIL open ended venue.....not very often you see that. It's like a fated convening of Gods or something......
  4. And I shall be there because I go to this school and have to work the competition . Hopefully I don't get scheduled during the last block....that would suck
  5. Wow...Cy Creek's really improved these past couple years. They were a div II band earlier this decade, and in '04 and '05 they weren't very good at all.....to place a fraction of a point behind Cinco Ranch and Dickinson; a 4A Heavy Hitter, is quite an improvement.
  6. ? Are you implying that CP is going to abandon UIL's rulings and go exclusively BOA? Or is UIL changing their ruling on the 8:00 thing?
  7. PR got screwed.....they were supposed to win it this year.....Now, I don't think their show was good enough to win but I think they still should have been top 3.
  8. lol, jk on the title ...but seriously, what do ya'll think of the growing trend in electronics lately? Seems like even the most conservative UIL bands at least have a bass guitar or a choral voice synthesizer or something these days. Personally I think the level of electronic integration by bands like Ronald Reagan (I like how they had their bells play in unison with a harp synth, in, I think their '05 or '06 show) and LD Bell (with their ambient bass chords throughout the show in '05 and '06) are ideal, but still, I love it when a band just pulls out all the stops and cranks it up to THE MAX!!! (Westfield '02-'05 comes to mind with all their crazy asian and techno riffs....and of course; pro rappers). Gotta love the weather effects; thunderstorms, blizzards etc, as well as all the spacey stuff. Electronics; the greatest thing to happen to marching band.
  9. G-town won The Guard Caption (first time ever I believe)...that was the only caption they won... ...didn't get the drumline caption though....which isn't too surprising because CP, Bowie and RR all have awesome lines....I'm sure one of them got it.
  10. Clear Brook, Vista Ridge, Akins, Connally, Berkner, Mansfield (and their sister schools).....there's plenty more but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.
  11. ^ ^ Ah, this looks familiar....oh wait, that's pretty much the Georgetown way to march since year 1; own the percussion, place high in music and suck it up with the visual.
  12. You know, after reading all of the predictions thus far, I realize that no one (including myself) has a CLUE how this is going to turn out. Almost every band on there has been placed in almost every prediction placement slot by at least one person. Seems like this one is up in the air. ...my personal favorite facet of these predictions are the ones (and there's more than a couple of you) who didn't put Georgetown in any of the finalist slots but still have them slated to win the percussion caption......yeah. It's not surprising though....Gtown is a state-level band with an unstoppable drumline, but history has shown that they are definitely not an early season band and have failed to place in finals on more than one occasion at this "early-season" event. I wish them well in the event--as an alumnus should, but don't expect them to do so .
  13. Y'know this band is pretty close to home.....do they ever make appearances in any of the Texas Regionals? Distance obviously isn't too much of an issue with this band if they went to GN last year.
  14. Mark Custom Music (markcustom.com) has the CD for $15 though if you ever make it out to one of the Texas Music Conventions in San Antonio (TMEA, TBA, TCDA etc.) sometime during your life you can typically pick it up at the Mark Custom booth for 10 bucks using a student discount. Or you can hear bits and pieces of it for free at the UH website: http://www.music.uh.edu/bands/windensemble.html
  15. Yeah, the Bosquet sucks. Felt more like a book of scale exercises than etudes.
  16. Has Richland made GN Finals before? I dunno....they're good, but they never struck me as a GN Finalist-level band.
  17. That piece IS amazing. I've heard both the demo recording on MBM and the UH Wind Ensemble version. The MBM version (I think it's some uni band in Wisconsin) in some ways I enjoyed more musically, though UH's was definitely much cleaner. The composer must love Tubas and Euphoniums.....solos galor! Not to mention the 5 part split between the Tubas and Euphoniums towards the end of the piece.
  18. Umm.....*ahem* but these are THE Arban's 14 characteristic studies....probably THE most famous and most essential core to a Euphonium music major (and Trumpets as well). It's not a new book at all, it's a section of 14 etudes that've been sitting in the back of the Arban's unabridged method for the last century. If you pursue music in college as a Euphonium player, you WILL learn these etudes at some point (most likely in your first year) whether it's the all-state book or not. The person who told you the book was controversial is a Fuc.ktard....you can't talk down to something so essential that is the pure and utter epitome of "standard". It's like saying that you shouldn't eat bread products because bread is so "last week" and controversial. Who chose the etudes for this year and wrote this performance guide in the link? Whoever it is, they'll be "premiering" these selections this weekend at the Texas Bandmaster's Convention. The writing style kind of reminds me of Dr. Bowman *looks it up* Oh.....Dr. Howey! Awesome, I'll studying with this guy next year at Sam Houston
  19. I'm planning on staying the whole weekend for Texas Bandmaster's Convention (basically TMEA except just for band stuff)....if I can find a friend/contact who's willing to let me crash on their floor. I'll worry about that when I get there though. 'Skipping the morning show so I can hit the exhibit hall (aka; band nerd candy store) at the convention center and buy some CDs, maybe look for a gig bag for my Euphonium, then go back to the Alamodome for finals. And I'll be back again on Wednesday for the Choir Director's Convention to watch my cousin perform in some kind of all-state choir. I'd stay through Monday and Tuesday into Wednesday but I gotta work on Tuesday though, kinda sucks.
  20. Fossil Ridge's '06 show reminds me a lot like Westfield '04.....same composer I know, but it's like they chose the exact same pieces :/.....I liked it though....and the crowd seemed to as well. Uematsu is a genius. And Tempered Steel and October? That's a good combination.....I love Tempered Steel, it's like the perfect opener....Georgetown did it as our opener for 2000 when we went to the 5A State marching contest......and October is like the perfect ballad--2 of my favorite pieces ever in the same show, how cool .
  21. Ever heard of Limewire? Not too useful for BOA stuff, but for DCI you should be able to find some good quality videos of '06.
  22. Yeah, we had this dude this past year come into band from Klein Forrest, he told everybody he just got back from a summer with the Cavaliers, though the guy was still fat as f@uck and white as.....well, a white dude : /. Well somebody in the band did some research and found out he was a liar and thus was forever ostricized from the band. We all call him "Cavi", at first to make fun of him.....but even after the novelty wore off, it was just a catchy nickname so we all call him it without even thinking about it, even in normal everday conversation. Even the band director has called him Cavi without meaning to a time or 2. He's a Bass Trombone player, who blasts like a moron.....but will talk about how the modern pedagogy demands that Bass Trombones use as much edge as possible or some BS like that. The thing with this loser is he always tries to one-up you. You talk about how you had fun in the top ensemble at Texas Tech Band Camp?.....he'll brag about making it in to the Texas Music Festival at UH......you claim you've played concerts with the Houston Symphonic Band, he'll claim he once subbed for the Houston Symphony....even though it's all bull. And he knows his stuff so he can weave a pretty convincing story (knows the names of most major university professors and Symphony Tuba/Trombone players....as well as the model instrument they play on)......but after awhile we just learned to tune him out and not listen to a thing he says. The thing that gets him shafted the most if how he'll walk up to a random group of say, saxophone players and talk about how he's had lessons with the brass musicains of some awesome symphony and they'll all just be like, "Who cares?! We play saxophone". Keep in mind this is a Community COLLEGE. I think he might be retarded....
  23. Highly agree with the one before me. Doing this actually will help you tremendously when you learn to triple tongue....I had a lot of trouble with speed when I was first learning to triple tongue and by accenting the KU-sound, I was able to get a lot more definition to each note, plus it gave my tongue a bit of a "springboard" which allowed me to increase my speed. In multiple-tonguing, your non-tongued syllables need to have just as much definition as your tongued ones. You cannot achieve this without enacting a harsher KU-sound in practice.
  24. There's so many good shows.....and I probably haven't heard half as much as a lot of ya'll. Cavis 95 - The Planets Phantom 96 - A Defiant Heart SCV 89 - Phantom of the Opera Madison '05 - Carmen Regardless of all that.....my absolute favorite show is Madison Scouts '95: A Drum Corps Fan's Dream. After listening to that show for the very first time I just sorta sat there afterwards and thought "....THIS is what it's all about!" F*** the scores and to heck with the judges (though they did do quite well that year if I've got my score archive memorized correctly)!!! The energy, definitely the energy. Cavaliers may be perfect and Devils may have intensity....but in the end the true winner is the audience, and this show just drives that point home. Their follow-up year is seriously just as good. Man, I wish Scouts could still rock the crowd like that.
