  1. Yup! Unfortunately I don't have any Akins shows. I really wish I would acquired them while I was there.
  2. I really want to see if I enjoy composing. I am as green as it gets. Does anyone know where I should start and give any tips on doing this?
  3. Not a rant, just a lighthearted musing. I'm really tired so I hope this makes sense. :-) I play(ed) bassoon obviously. Goodness. The amount of headaches I've had dealing with reeds during my bassoon playing career makes me think maybe I should have picked something else. lol If I could go back and do it over again, I'd probably pick trombone. It was so stressful being at the mercy of this tiny piece of cane. Some days I would feel like I could play in any college band in the country. Other days I felt like I should be in a middle school band all because my reed was not doing what I wanted it to. I feel like if I picked up a brass, I would have enjoyed music more. It would be more about the music than it was about the equipment. You have to spend hours making and caring for those reeds. That's before you even pick up your horn. Ah, the tedious life of a bassoon player. I played baritone in marching band so I have a little reference. Is brass as straight forward as I think it is? Or is there a difficulty I'm not seeing right now? Can you really just pick up the instrument and get right to the music? I kind of want to pick up a trombone to play in my free time.
  4. Wow! Am I imagining things or is Akins not going to this? why would they not go to a BOA in their own city? :-/
  5. Guys, I've been out of the loop for the past 5 years. Is LD Bell still as dominate as they were then?
  6. Okay I didn't go to Bowie high school, but I've loved a lot of their shows. Does anyone know where I can buy, or can anyone send me audio of: 2004: Mysteries of the Fifth Sun 2005: Essays and 2006: A Little Night Musik. I really want this music on my ipod. If anyone can help out, my email is bassoonpadwan@gmail.com
  7. RIP Mr. Dinkins He was a great teacher. I had the pleasure of being his students a couple of summers at SSMF. My thoughts go out to his family, band students, and everyone else who knew him. Any word yet on who will be replacing him as head director?
  8. Yea I found that recording the same day I made that post and ordered it. Order just came in today and I'm very satisfied with it! For a while there I was watching youtube videos but always wanted a good recording. Was thinking about uploading this recording of Galactic to youtube. Is there something unethical about that? I mean I'm just putting it up on youtube, not for download. And I'd put a link to the amazon page where I bought it in case somebody wants the recording. I just feel like there's no decent recordings out there so I wanted to put one on youtube.
  9. you have akins 2007? awesome! that was my last year there. and could you pm me your email please? thanks
  10. Wow! You nailed it! Thanks a bunch! Now if anyone knows of a decent recording... that would be great too There's only one on itunes and the ones on youtube aren't the best.
  11. Okay back in high school I was in the all-city band either in 2005 or 2006. We played a piece that I cannot remember the name of and it's KILLING ME. lol I really want to look up the piece and hear it. And I can hear the music in my head but for the life of me cannot remember the name of the piece or composer. If anyone knows what the AISD All-City Band's programs were for 2005/2006 it would be much appreciated. The name of the guest director for the band that year would possibly help too. Or you can help me guess what the piece was. Here's all the clues I can give you(which probably won't help at all) and they might be totally wrong but I might as well throw it out there: - It's a "spacey" type of music. - might have "celestial," "cosmic," or something of that nature in the title - beginning starts off aggressive with a syncopated beat - has an oboe duet that sounds very martiany - there is a beautiful but short english horn solo that has the low brass holding chords in the back ground - later theres a long oboe solo - I think(key word) there might be a whole movement for piano um that's really all i can remember =/ any help is a appreciated
