well, for one, Hazo doesn't have that much music inthe first place... around 20 or so composistions. And if you think it all sounds the same, apparently you haven't heard or played Exultate, or Ride. Niether sound the same at all. AT ALL. Not alot of his music is similar at all. All composers have a similar style... Gershwin does (although, I'm not partial to Gershwin) Barber, Bartok, Shostakovich... I could go on forever. Doesn't mean all of there music sounds the same. ~>conner

a contrasting section is needed, yes. That doesn't have to mean ballad (although that is what most people, including me prefer.) A show can't be all about a show going 210 bpm, with screaming trumpet solos, and flying mellophone runs, so on. Ballads can in fact be the most appreciated part of a show. Southwind '00, Crossmen '04 (as well as with ALOT of Crossmen shows... they always have great ballads) Santa Clara Vanguard 2000... I have a whole list. I think a show with Mood changes is much more enjoyable than a show with blazing fast temos/absurdly loud playing, the entire time. -C

Renegades to 8th? no way. I think Grenadiers could make a strong push this year... they almost got in last year, with a good show. I hope they get more numbers, and maybe an even better designed show, and they could make a huge push. top 10 for DCA finals: 1. Reading Buccaneers... again. 2. Bushwackers... although they could beat the Bucs this year. it should be close. 3. Brigs... Rouge will be cool... top 3 will be a toss up. 4. Renegades... because they are cool. 5. MBI... cool corps, good hornline, could be higher 6. Empire... see above. 7. CorpsVets... almost marched with them this year... they have a mighty show, and a larger brassline. if the percussion gets better, they will be a huge threat. 8. Gold... another finals show for Gold. Tower of Power! 9. Cabs... they will drop again, unless they have a much better organizational year, and a better designed show. 10. Grenadiers... I said it already... the 10-12 spots will be close. If Grenadiers can manage a good show, with larger numbers, watch out. all of this is speculation, as most corps in DCA have switched to stealth mode, and haven't released to much. gonna be a great year for DCI, and DCA! -C

meh. not overly excited about it... I wish Suncoast Sound would have gotten in. -C

I've seen Santa Clara 92 plenty of times. ~>conner

that's true. Look back at alot... actually most shows. They didn't have a title, or theme. They were usually songs that had some sort of relativety with one another. Now, if you did that, you'd probably get toasted. -C

Glassmen is doing Beethoven. I dont know if I would officially add yet... because the director hasn't "officially" released yet. He just said it on a podcast. Crown wont be releasing to the public until June... so dont hold your breath. Here is Spirit's show: Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue - * Old Man River (From Showboat) * That Old Black Magic (from Bus Stop) * The Notebook * Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters * Blues in the Night * Blue Shades -C

Your Directors' past Drum Corps glories
CHS King Mello replied to QuadraticBeats's topic in Drum Corps Forum
I doubt that was writing issues. generally, directors tell the designers the level of difficulty they want the show to be (meaning how much movement, giving a generalization of how many pages of drill... so on so forth) and they write it to the best of there ability. Tim Hinton wrote wrote for 10 programs this year, and I got the oppurtunity to march in one, and see several others. They were all designed VERY well, but some weren't performed as well as others. *NOTE* this is not a crack on your band, saying you performed poorly. I have never seen you all perform. but, then again I'm speaking from my expieriance... Sloan could very well have prioritized shows. I'm just saying I doubt it. -C -

percussion instructor/8th grade director played timpani with Suncoast Sound 85 and 86. not around anymore, but back in those days the corps was a powerhouse. -C -

I was thinking the same... I noticed the Delta. doesn't really matter... nice uniforms. Sept, I think a Crown type plume would look good with them. -C

Mission Accomplished. and my name is Conner. not South Carolina kid. note, the Conner in the top of my signature. -C

and on a side note, I do know that I put Cavies to win. Because I like the show they have picked out this year, and it sounds more "symphonic." Certainly a nice break from what they have been doing. -C

You have obviously lacked to see that I have said IN MY OPINION at least 3 times. I told you what I'd rather watch, and I would much rather watch Cavies 97, then Cavies 02. Plain and simple, MY OPINION. who says entertainment is judged by GE? I do, in fact, hate some shows that are completely loaded with GE. to much of a good thing is bad. and judging by your signature, you are a Cavies fan, which means that I will never win this argument with you, even though those aren't my intentions. and by the way, my band did square shoulders at 200 at the end of our show. anyway, my call 1. Cavaliers 2. Phantom 3. BD 4. The Cadets 5. Bluecoats 6. Crown 7. SCV 8. Madison 9. Blue Knights 10. Boston Crusaders 11. Glassmen 12. Spirit -- 13. Crossmen 14. Colts 15. Seattle 16. Southwind 17. Blue Stars -- 18. Captial Regiment 19. The Magic 20. Pacific Crest 21. Mandarins 22. Pioneer 23. Esperanza 24. Kiwanis Kavaliers -C

the only corps I know of that uses planes is Pacific Crest. Southwind DOES NOT travel on planes. whoever told you that was either misinformed, stupid, or just being a ****. sorry if that was cleared up already.. I just read that and had to get my point in. -C

notice, I said In My Opinion. I'm a bigger fan of the symphonic style of music alla 2000, and prior. The path they have taken from 2001-2005 or so, with the minimalist/original music has done three things to me. A- 2001, 2002, 2003 sound the same. Not saying they are bad shows, because obviously they aren't. They just dont entertain me as much as Cavies shows did in the 90's. B- 2005 was a very very well designed show, but the music bored me. ::shrugs:: sorry. Just not what I like to hear drum corps play... ever. C- 2004 lacked very much emotional musical impact. Again a very well designed show, and I do enjoy it, but I felt something was missing. Again, this is in my opinion. I've seen enough drum corps to know what I like, and that's just not it. I do enjoy watching the shows occasionally, butif I was given the choice between a show that was very well designed, but not as entertaining, and a show that was not designed well, or executed well, but entertained me, I'd pick the latter of the two. Cavaliers used to play Symphonic music. I consider Niagra Falls, The Planets, Advent Collection (the 91 and 92 series), Revolution and Triumph, all great shows. I also consider 01-05 great shows. But they just dont please me as much. that's all. and by the way, 95 and and the latter shows are completely different. The design is completely different, the music is obviously comlpletely different... the only things that remained the same (save a few alterations) have been the corps uniforms. my opinion -C
-
it's fair game this year. plain and simple... it's nearly impossible to call it this year. For the record, I'm saying Phantom Regiment. and on a side note, Cavaliers have been good for a while... just because they only won there first show in 92, seriously go back and watch some of the shows. The first show that really reminds me of being awesome was 85... the first rendition of The Planets. since then the corps has been up to par with at least the top 6 corps. Cavies have, in my opinion, lost something they had before 2000, and that's entertainment. every Cavies show 2000, and before I've seen have been VERY entertaining. Every show after that, not so much. -C

to tell you the truth, I want to double major in History ed, and music ed. I want to teach history, and be a brass tech with a corps. I dont really have much of a desire to teach a high school band. -C
