  1. I wasn't trying to diminish the accomplishments of any particular band with my comment, I was just trying to have fun and infer if Texas could have dominated any more than they already did. Round Rock had 3 outstanding performances across Friday and Saturday and they definitely deserved the placements they received. They really cleaned between San Antonio and Indianapolis and it paid off, winning the semis music caption and almost the semis visual caption as well along with Avon. If they had won visual performance in semis, like I said earlier, I believe they would have been the first Texas band to do so. I'm not necessarily trying to play the "what-if" game with these comments for no reason, but instead I'm trying to highlight the high levels of musical achievement so many Texas bands have realized. Didn't think I would instigate a debate in any way, as all I said was that "Hebron could have won or been runner-up." It wasn't a hit at the Dragon Band at all and I think it's simply amazing they and Cedar Ridge, two schools from the same district, proved a lot of people wrong (myself included) based on how freakin' well they would do their first attempt at grand nationals. It's not very common for a band to make finals their first trip to Indy let alone score in the top 5, and both of these bands really shut everyone up with their "on the bubble" talk. I guess we all should have known Hopefully getting 4th place at Grand Nationals and a Rose Parade invitation was redemption for placing 14th last year at UIL Area. I know I would be ecstatic. Hope to see the two RRISD bands next year in the state competition!
  2. Also Round Rock was just .05 in semis from tying with Avon for the visual performance caption. Would they have been the first Texas band to ever win visual performance in either semis or finals?
  3. I'm going to play the "what if" game. In semi-finals, the lowest placing Texas band was LD Bell in 8th place. IF Hebron, CTJ, and James Bowie had attended this year, Texas could have had 8 finalists! (you know, assuming every other factor stays constant with the judging). But really, I can't imagine what would have happened if Hebron had gone. I think they could have possibly been the first band to win Grand Nats (or be the first runner-up too I think) on their first trip to Indianapolis!
  4. Well I didn't watch semi-finals so I can't say for sure. It looks like Music GE judge 2 in semis liked them as much as I did though. He gave them a 19.5, which was only behind The Woodlands who scored a 19.8.
  5. Here are semi-finals scores 1. 95.60 – The Woodlands 2. 95.00 – Carmel 3. 94.40 – Avon 4. 93.10 – Round Rock 5. 92.90 – Cedar Ridge 6. 92.60 – Marian Catholic 7. 91.30 – Marcus 8. 91.15 – L.D. CR unfortunately took a beating between semi-finals and finals.
  6. In what way did they seem to improve? New closer, just better overall performance, better musicality, more energy? I won't be watching the live feed until saturday night.
  7. I'm assuming most of the grand national send off performances for Texas groups were tonight. If anyone gets ahold of any videos, please post!
  8. I'm curious on everybody's thoughts on the RRISD schools. Cedar Ridge's show is one of my personal favorites of the year, but I'm wondering how the judges will see it. What does everyone think? Will they score as high in music as they did in San Antonio or was that just a case of erratic judging? And how would this likely affect music GE? From what I could hear, I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the top 5 in music performance if they're to make GN finals.
  9. I tried adding BOA grand nats to the predictions list but it hasn't been published. Could a mod possibly post it? (Unless of course, that's edging too far away from "Texas" band territory)
  10. Cool spreadsheet! Normally I would say you can't compare scores across different competitions, but in this case they actually seem to be fairly comparable. We can infer that Avon, Carmel, and the Woodlands are at roughly the same place and quality right now and they all scored about within 1 point of each other in the 92-93 area. This is while the other GN competing bands at both competitions scored roughly in the 87-89 range. The score spread between the top group to the lower one is about the same (~5 points). Now since at San Antonio the 6-11 group flip-flopped just as 3-6 did at Indianapolis, I think that it shows how close those middle-range groups are going to be to each other. TWHS, Carmel, and Avon are all going to be at the top (and I'm thinking it'll be a battle between The Woodlands and Carmel). Therefore I think we'll see a significant point drop to the other GN groups we saw at these competitions (Blue Springs, Marcus, LD Bell, CR, RR, Lawrence Central, Lake Central, MC, and Centerville). Unfortunately, since both groups flip-floppd, we still can't really make too accurate of a prediction based on scores. HOWEVER, I do believe that Marcus is going to fall towards the top of this pack. Sorry if this was too wordy, but I hope I got my point of cross that I think these scores are somewhat comparable (If only they hadn't all flip-flopped!).
  11. I'm not going to make my official predictions until after BOA Indianapolis. But I will say these are my top 3: 1) The Woodlands - They have everything going for them. One of their best shows and it's on the anniversary of Spring and Westfield's win as well (I can dream, right?) 2) Carmel - Have been climbing all season and I think they'll peak/overtake Avon 3) Avon From the point of view of an overly proud Texan, I really wish Marcus had chosen to go last year and Hebron to go this year in Marcus' place. Marcus would have likely won in 2012, and I think Hebron would make the top 4 this year. Random observation: Does anybody else notice a similarity between Carmel and Hebron? Here are my thoughts: 1. Both are probably the best group in terms of music performance in their respective state this year, or are at least very close. 2. Their shows tend to show off individual sections. 3. They tend to have shows that are never in your face, but as somebody said elsewhere (probably MFA forums) "burn slowly throughout." 4. They both have blue uniforms. Am I right, or am I right?
  12. I think it also had to do with the little exposure Reagan had before attending BOA SA. Although you guys did go to Conroe, I heard nothing substantial about your show between then and last night. No reviews by anyone. Nothing. It seemed like nobody had seen how your show had improved in the past month to make an accurate judgment. In all honesty since I've only seen one (extremely low quality, up-close) video of Reagan's show from this year, I STILL don't know what the show is like. I think I saw you guys marching contras?
  13. Looking at the recaps, it does in fact look like that the top 6 block most of us had agreed on were in fact the top 6 in prelims (LD Bell was actually 7th because they tied with Coppell who had higher GE, but close enough). The first number is prelims ranking, second is finals: The Woodlands: 5, 1 Hebron: 1, 2 Bowie: 4, 3 CTJ: 2, 4 Reagan: 11, 5 Blue Springs: 10, 6 Vandegrift: 12, 7 Marcus: 3, 8 LD Bell: 7, 9 Round Rock: 9, 10 Cedar Ridge: 14, 11 Coppell: 6, 12 Westlake: 8, 13 Cedar Park: 13, 14 (Other notables - prelims) Leander - 15 Spring - 16 Vista Ridge - 17 Flower Mound - 18 Anderson - 19 Mansfield - 20 Keller Central - 21 James Martin - 22 (tie) Haltom - 22 (tie) Plano East - 24 James E Taylor - 25 Churchill - 26 The Woodlands College Park - 27 Keller - 28 Hendrickson - 29 North Shore - 30 Aledo - 31 Pflugerville - 32 ***Richland - 38*** (WHAT?!)
  14. ^You may want to format that a little better if possible. And WOW Marcus came in 13th place for musical ensemble performance. Don't know if I entirely agree with that one..
  15. I figured just as much. BOA Allen spoiled me when they posted recaps in something like 15 minutes.
  16. I'm going to throw a giant sh*t-fit if I can't see recaps (or at least numerical rankings) in the next hour.
  17. LD Bell has never gotten below 3rd place in any competition except for grand nats (5th in '03).
  18. I have no words. The most unforgettable BOA San Antonio in history.

Johnson HS, TX Cedar Park HS, TX Comments/Observations: - All Grant Nat attendees at this competition (Marcus, LD Bell, TWHS, Cedar Ridge, Round Rock, and Blue Springs) made finals - The only grand nat attendee to place was Marcus - Surprised that TWHS did not place in the top 3 (and winning what i figured was their weakest category, visual performance) - Coppell came out of nowhere and won music performance - Did not expect Hebron to be class champ without any captions Prediction: The top 6 in prelims (assuming LD bell, TWHS, and Bowie made 4-6 in no particular order) will probably flip flop. I also believe the captions are going to be entirely different tonight also. So incredibly excited to see what happens! Congrats to Blue Springs for making finals in the most difficult BOA super regional in the country, and HUGE congrats to Vandegrift and Cedar Ridge for finally breaking through and making SA finals!
  20. I completely agree with Rubisco. I think this will be a record breaking year for The Woodlands, and they'll for sure break through their perpetual 4th place barrier at grand nats - probably placing in the top 3 (it doesn't hurt that Broken Arrow and Tarpon aren't attending either). This might be overly hopeful, but I'm getting the feeling they'll at least upset either Carmel or Avon (if not both). So I don't think it would be a stretch if they got second place behind either of those groups. But c'mon! Who wants to get second place? We don't want another Reagan '05 and we certainly don't want another '06 season (where TWHS was first in semi-finals but came in fourth in finals). With my intense Texan bias, I want to see this group finally win Grand Nats! That might be asking too much, but I know the TWHS is certainly capable.
  21. Does anybody have any opinions on Reagan this year? I haven't heard much of their show and in all honesty have no idea what to expect out of them on friday and saturday.
  22. Would it be possible to remove the still open area D predictions from the predictions page? Results are now known but the predictions are still open. Thanks.
  23. Did music judges 2 and 3 give hebron and plano east the same rankings?
  24. Since we know the results from DMI, these are my now my official predictions: 1. The Woodlands 2. Hebron 3. LD Bell 4. Marcus 5. Bowie 6. CTJ 7. Round Rock 8. Cedar Ridge 9. Blue Springs, MO 10. Vandegrift 11. Cedar Park 12. Coppell 13. Reagan 14. Plano East Music - Hebron Visual - TWHS General Effect - TWHS Very excited to see how wrong I turn out to be!
  25. 94.40? That is an ungodly high score for Atlanta. I didn't watch the live stream, but I don't see how Broken Arrow was able to improve their performance from an 89.35 in St. Louis to that. I'm sure they cleaned and I know BOA scoring is not a flawless system, but.... geez.
