That's too bad. I was looking forward to seeing them there again. That still leaves us with 5 Texas bands going this year.

Yep, the stage is set for a bloodbath this year! First, we will have 16 bands that have made the finals in the last 5-6 years: Avon H.S., IN Ben Davis H.S., IN Broken Arrow H.S., OK Carmel H.S., IN Cedar Ridge H.S., TX Center Grove H.S., IN Centerville H.S., OH Harrison H.S., GA Homestead H.S., IN L.D. Bell H.S., TX Lake Central H.S., IN Lawrence Township, IN Marian Catholic H.S., IL Round Rock H.S., TX The Woodlands H.S., TX William Mason H.S., OH Then we have 3 newcomers from Texas, one that is a major contender for the top half of the finals: Hebron H.S., TX Keller Central High School, TX Keller H.S., TX And we have other strong contenders yet to make the finals, such as Blue Springs. Any way you look at it, there are going to be quite a few former finalists that are not going to be finalists this year! This may be the first year that you will have to have 90+ score to make the cut. I can't wait!!

Well, It's a different game every year as every band has a different group of band members. Some graduate out their strongest players and some still have their strongest or have others step up and improve. I think it's a little easier to know what to expect from the programs with a tradition and history of excellence. The ones just recently getting to the level of Grand National finals are not as easy to predict. Broken Arrow will Likely always be at the top, as will Carmel and Avon. Others will likely make the finals, but are still anyone's guess whether they are at bottom or middle. My greatest hope is that all Texas bands make the finals. With Broken Arrow and Union both making returns this year, that's going to be much harder than in 2013.

It's simple... much less competition. The other Super Regionals have way less competition than the San Antonio Super Regional. San Antonio really should be classified as something else, like a Mega Super Regional or a Grand Super Regional. Seriously, it really should be in a different category than the others. So, most mid to upper tier bands in Texas can go to the other Super Regionals and place well in their finals.

The way they've been growing, I think it's likely that it will still be a large band. And besides, many times you get much more clarity of sound when you have only your best on the field. I doubt there will be much to be missed if they clean up their sound and play like they did at the end of the 2013 season. I'm just excited to see what Round Rock and all of the other great Texas bands have in store for us next year!

Yep, this is for sure. I heard that they revealed it to the band last week. From what I heard, it was well planned and a pretty good idea.

A 6.25 jump in 2 weeks was a real accomplishment. I don't think anyone saw that coming! I doubt that any of the top tier bands were paying any attention to Round Rock before they received the music award in the semifinals. I'd like to see them do that again. I would bet that the top tiers will be watching them this fall, although I don't know how helpful it will be as they are typically slow-starters (not a criticism, but just an observation).

True! I guess we'd better be more specific even though we all likely assumed that Leander was the intended district in that case.

Okay, I know it's early, but I'm already getting excited about the Grand Nationals for 2015! I'm curious about which bands from Texas will be going. So far, I have heard from direct sources that both Round Rock and Cedar Ridge are going again. That's 2 so far. I've heard from a source in Indianapolis that also Bowie, CTJ, and The Woodlands may be attending. That would make 5 if that rumor is true. I'm guessing that there may be others, maybe Marcus, LD Bell, and maybe even Hebron. And there could be others! If we have 7 or more of our top Texas bands go to the Grand Nationals, this could be the most brutal and the most competitive BOA Grand Nationals of all time. I think real history could be made this year if this happens. If you have any information on any of our bands that will be attending, please let us know!

Well, here's the thing for me -- I don't want to see anyone get a raw deal whether it's a band I like or not. Something does need to be done about it and I'm only stating that it probably will not happen as it is a tradition in Texas to have these asinine results and that not enough people are upset about it to push for change. I personally believe that in a state where so much effort is made to achieve excellence in the marching/playing arts that the UIL should make an equal or better effort to ensure that competitions are more fair than they are. There is more than enough knowledge and talent out there to improve on what we have now. I don't believe that anyone should just be happy that they made it as far as they did or be happy that they almost got the ranking they deserved. Credit where credit is due! -

I think with UIL, part of the problem is with the scoring system. With a 1,000 point range, it's just too vast of a point spread for most people to manage. Some of the judges seem to reduce it to 100-150 points (e.g. scoring from 850-999) just to make it a little easier to be consistent. But I can't think of any method that will remedy one judge or even two judges liking completely different bands than the other 3 or 4. Also, I don't think that the current UIL scoring system will change any time soon, due to the fact that so few directors actually want it changed. Think about it -- 90+% of the bands in Texas are not affected by it and they aren't even contenders for Area or State. Of the bands that are in contention for competition at this level, it's usually only a couple that seemingly get a bad break. The others that are in contention for advancement or in the finals are just glad to be there OR the system worked just fine for them. So we're really only talking about a few bands each year that are upset about it and all the others are likely not too upset that it happened to those few that are still doing comparatively well. Life is not fair... UIL Area and State are consistent proof of that! -

I would never count LD Bell out for anything. A dip here or there is one thing, but I don't think a band with their very impressive track record is likely to stay down for very long. With a record at the finals of the Grand Nationals like the one below, these guys have been a threat for quite a while and are likely to be for a long time. 2013 - 10th (89.20) 2010 - 3rd (96.05) 2009 - 2nd (95.25) 2008 - 2nd (96.50) 2007 - 1st (96.10) 2006 - 2nd (96.35) 2005 - 3rd (95.60) 2003 - 5th (93.00) 2001 - 4th (95.85) And this is just the GN's... -

To me, 1,000 points is just too big of a range to manage. Imagine how hard it must be after listening to 20 or 30 bands and then trying to remember if you gave some band a 780 or a 770 and wanting to give the current band a score just above what you gave that band. Maybe you're 30 or more points off and you actually score them lower. I'm sure every judge has their own system that works and makes sense to them. I have been told by judges that I know that it does get difficult to maintain whatever standard you've set at the beginning of the day, throughout the day. It's got to be very difficult. As you notice, some guys only use around a 100-300 point range, which I would think would be easier to manage. I guess that's one valid argument for the BOA 100-point system. That and being a modern scoring system for modern-style bands... -

Nothing surprises me anymore on the scoring at UIL Area & State competitions. The variance of scoring between the judges is sometimes insane. Seeing the placement for one band ranging from 1st to the upper teens and twenties is all too common. The only way to counter-act this is to perform really, really well. Of course, sometimes that just isn't enough as that one guy is way off from the other four. Here's the 6A results sorted by judge: 2014 Area B Finals Analysis.pdf 2014 Area B Prelims Analysis.pdf -

2014 BOA San Antonio Super-Regional Predictions
Hard Core Band Fan replied to Jbl3770's topic in Events on TxBands.com
All I'm going to say is remember last year when only a few thought Round Rock was going to do well at the Grand Nationals and they got 4th in the prelims, 4th in the semis, and 4th in the finals (and a music caption in the semis). So far, most everyone is putting them as a bottom-feeders in the BOA SA finals. If they could have the same kind of push that they had last year, I could see them doing well here and at the 6A State finals. I'm not saying they will, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I've seen some not-so-strong performances from the typical big boys so far this year and there could be some shake-ups. It should be fun to watch! -

I just saw the list of bands currently signed up for the 2014 Grand Nationals. So far, only 1 Texas band is going -- Flower Mound HS. It's been a while since we only had 1 participant. Here's what we had in previous years: 2013 - The Woodlands 2013 - Round Rock 2013 - Marcus 2013 - LD Bell 2013 - Cedar Ridge 2012 - Bowie 2012 - Reagan 2011 - The Woodlands 2011 - CTJ 2011 - Spring 2010 - LD Bell 2010 - Stephen F Austin 2010 - Cedar Park 2010 - Winston Churchill 2009 - LD Bell 2009 - Marcus 2009 - The Woodlands 2009 - Bowie 2008 - LD Bell 2007 - LD Bell 2007 - The Woodlands 2007 - Stephen F Austin 2007 - Richland 2007 - Reagan 2007 - Clear Brook 2006 - LD Bell 2006 - The Woodlands 2006 - Winston Churchill 2006 - Bowie 2006 - Cypress Falls 2006 - Connally 2005 - Reagan 2005 - LD Bell 2005 - Richland 2004 - Stephen F Austin 2004 - The Woodlands 2003 - Westfield 2003 - Reagan 2003 - LD Bell 2002 - Stephen F Austin 2002 - The Woodlands 2002 - Winston Churchill 2002 - Reagan 2002 - Haltom 2002 - Spring 2001 - LD Bell 2001 - Richland 1999 - Winston Churchill 1999 - Leander 1998 - Winston Churchill 1998 - The Woodlands 1998 - Haltom 1997 - Richland 1995 - Westfield 1994 - Klein 1993 - Spring 1993 - Duncanville 1991 - Duncanville 1991 - Spring 1990 - Westfield 1985 - Westfield
