    It’s the sum of the 5 judges placements, which is how the bands are ranked. Example: Music 1 - 3rd Music 2 - 3rd Music 3 - 2nd Visual 1 - 2nd Visual 1 - 5th Your score would be 15 (3+3+2+2+5)

    I’m completely shocked about Foster. I had them as a lock for State. I saw that show earlier in the season at BOA South Houston and it was outstanding.

    Are you talking about the bad judge rule? If two music judges and one visual judge have you ranked 3rd or higher, you automatically advance to State no matter what. I think that’s the only way to get an extra band that wouldn’t be in top 5.

    My takeaway from this competition is Foster. That was my first time seeing them and OH MY WORD those kids can play.

    Band kids (and fine arts kids in general) are definitely among the smartest in the school. I do agree with the one point in the article about missing practice though. Our director was not very understanding when it came to family obligations, even if we told him ahead of time. Many times we came to practice because we were terrified of what would happen if we missed.
