euro_euph06
We could get into the whole discussion of how some bands are UIL bands and others are BOA bands. But lets not. Next topic please.
mbui
While both scoring systems are very different, the only similarity is that music counts as the majority of your score. At UIL, there's a Music Performance Caption and a Marching (aka Visual) Performance Caption. Three judges for music and two for marching. Your overall score is based on the judges ordinal. ------ At BOA, there's a Music Performance, Visual Performance & General Effect caption. Two judges for Music Performance - 1 Individual, 1 Ensemble Two judges for Visual Performance - 1 Individual, 1 Ensemble Three judges for General Effect - 2 Music GE, 1 Visual GE Music Performance - 20 possible points (Indivudual & Ensemble scores averaged) Visual Performance - 20 possible points (Indivudual & Ensemble scores averaged) General Effect - 60 possible points (40 in Music, 20 in Visual) ------ To view the differences.... Xenon
ok so how come some bands beat other bands in UIL but not in BOA or viceversa. is the grading that diverse? UIL judging is about excellence of performance without regard to style or design since performance is the only part of the show that is directly affected by the students. This implies that UIL competitions are about the strength and accomplishments of the students and not about the designers. BOA judging is about the excellence of all portions of the show including performance (with quite a bit of leniency depending on the difficulty), style, and design. This implies that BOA competitions are about the strength of the show as a whole as created by the designers, directors, and the students. In general, bands that do extremely well in one circuit will do extremely well in the other; however, if what is lifting a show's score in BOA is design and performance leniency due to difficulty, then that band is likely not going to do as well at UIL.
