actualgirltrombone Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 Alright, could someone please explain to all us rookies on here about how the major competitions are scored? BOA, UIL stuff, what exactly IS ge. You know... all the stuff the people who have never marched before probably dont know. Quote
Dynasty Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 BOA: Music - 20% (Two 20 point scores, averaged) Individual Music Score - Out of 20 Ensemble Music Score - Out of 20 Visual - 20% (Two 20 point scores, averaged) Individual Visual Score - Out of 20 Ensemble Visual Score - Out of 20 General Effect - 60% (Three 20 point scores) Music 1 Score - Out of 20 Music 2 Score - Out of 20 Visual - Out of 20 UIL: Each judge gives a band a score (out of a very large number, possibly 100 but I do not remember). He then takes all of the scores and ranks each band from 1 (highest) to (number competing). Then the ranks are totaled for each band from each judge (5 judges). The lowest total is the first place, 2nd lowest is second place, etc. Quote
Xenon Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 Dynasty's description for UIL is close but not entirely accurate, please see the link below for a detailed description. http://www.uil.utexas.edu/music/scoring_procedure.html The basics are that there are 3 Music judges and 2 Visual judges and each one assigns each band a raw score from 0-1000 based on specific criteria on their scoring rubrik. At the end of the competition, all of the raw scores from one judge are put in order from highest score to lowest score and are thus assigned Ranks. The ranks that each band received are then added together to get their Total Rank Score. The bands are then ordered from Lowest Rank Score to Highest to get placements. Example: BandA gets 1, 2, 1 ranks in Music and 3, 4 ranks in Marching for a Total Rank Score of 11. Band B gets 2, 1, 2 ranks in Music and 1, 1 ranks in Marching for a Total Ranks Score of 7. BandB gets 1st place and BandA gets 2nd. Quote
Moose Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 of course its more like : Band A: Music 2nd, 7th, 10th Marching: 6th, 1st Band B:Music 1st, 1st, 1st Marching 1st, 23rd Despite evey judge except for one giving Band b 1st, Band A is the winner! Go LD Bell... I mean Churchill..... i mean.... Quote

Go LD Bell... I mean Churchill..... i mean.... No, if you would read the full description in the link that I provided above, you would see that there are rules which prevent such an occurrance from causing a problem. (There are also rules to eliminate ties) The "Bad Judge Rule" basically says that if a band receives two 1st place votes (or advancement votes) in Music and one 1st place vote (or advancement vote) in Marching, that band is automatically 1st place (or advances) even if the Total Rank Score says otherwise. Thus in your example, since Band B received three 1st place votes in Music and one 1st place vote in Marching, they would receive 1st place. Also, the rank differences that you mention are not entirely unlike the rank differences you see when you compare the Music GE scores in BOA. Quote
Moose Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 By bad, i was trying to point out a uil judging problem, but i guess i went a little overboard. Quote
