aaron067 Posted June 5, 2010 Posted June 5, 2010 (edited) What judge ranked DeSoto ahead of Coppell, and what were they smoking? Not that I'm putting Coppell on a pedestal, but even on their worst day I would put my money on that band over DeSoto without a second thought. Edited June 5, 2010 by aaron067 Quote

I was at the listening and thought that it was very clear cut Coppell, Desoto, and then SGP. But... Coppell's CD was a technical display of rhythms and extremely hard pieces with some slight issues (that stuff was really hard and complex) while Desoto's CD was much much much easier and thus much more clean and musical. If the judge was going purely based off of negative ticks and musicality and not giving credit to difficulty, then I could see them possibly putting Desoto ahead of Coppell even though I don't agree with it. Makes sense, I suppose. What was Coppell's program? Quote

All were the same as what they performed at UIL: Coppell: - Gerschwindmarsch from Symphonia Serna (Beethoven/Hindemith) - First Symphony (Barber/Duker) - Circus Overture (Schuman) Desoto: - The Black Horse Troop (Sousa/Fennell) - A Movement for Rosa (Camphouse) - Jocuri Poporale Romanesti (Roumanian Folk Dances) (Bartok/Yo Goto) South Grand Prairie: - Army of The Nile (Alford/Fennell) - Chester Overture for Band (Schuman) - Molly On The Shore (Grainger/Rogers/SMC) Quote

takigan Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I don't understand why they don't just skip the Region process entirely and have every tape submit straight to Area competition. There's way too much of judges showing up to these Region things, having no tapes to judge, send all the tapes on to the next level, collect their paychecks and go home. It'd be way cheaper and simpler to just skip Region. But that's just me. Quote

Dr. Shine has proposed reorganizations that would get rid of one of the levels because of this issue but they haven't been adopted. The best part of the proposals is that it would save more than enough money to make the State level two rounds so that you don't have to judge just off of 14 straight performances (30-45 minute long performances...). If it's the same proposal I'm aware of, he also wants there to be a specific performance venue and date for each area that would serve to make sure every band is submitting a single, live concert performance for their entire tape, helps to equalize recording standards around the state, and in general makes the entire contest more fair and focused on which ensemble is actually the most prepared (as opposed to the one that can acquire the best recordings over 4 or 5 performances). I like it. Quote

Even though both the Woodlands and Westfield submitted for Region. Lots of good things going on at College Park. Quote
