kempej01 Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 I have been wondering: Does anyone know how many bands (concert, marching, community, college, etc) are in Texas? Does anyone know how many musicians are involved? Just curious. Joe Quote
Xenon Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Well, there's potentially one high school band program for every high school in Texas. According to the UIL Alignments, there are the following numbers of high schools in each classification: 1A - not quite sure but at least 380 2A - 225 3A - 180 4A - 243 5A - 245 Total = at least 1,273 And this doesn't include private schools (except the very few that choose to compete in UIL as 5A). As for total numbers, I don't have any official numbers, but we can make a real quick estimate: Assumptions: 1A Average Size = 120 2A Average Size = 300 3A Average Size = 700 4A Average Size = 1500 5A Average Size = 2600 That would give you approximately (very rough estimate based on assumptions): ~1,240,600 Texas High School Students Assume on average 12% band membership (no real idea what this number should be but I know that 20% is high): ~150,000 High School Band Members Quote
takigan Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 There's something like 100 or 110 universities in Texas, 30 or 40-something have marching bands, though there are a lot more with some kind of band or music program. There's somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 community colleges in Texas, less than half have band programs (roughly a dozen or so have marching bands). Giving an exact or even rough number of participants in the college band activity is really tough though. Quote
