Prelims to Semis BOA SA....

Recommended Posts

Super Regionals are Prelims and Finals format only. Prelims is broken up into two days---Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning and afternoon. Finals is Saturday night.

If there are 45+ bands enrolled at the competition, 14 bands will advance to Finals. If there are less than 45, 12 bands advance. In San Antonio's case, 14 bands will be advancing from Prelims to Finals.

And for Super Regional Finals, performances times are random draw. It's not flighted, where the top five in Prelims perform the last five spots in Finals and bottom five perform the first five spots, like at the regular Regional Championships.

Hope that helped.

Is BOA San Antonio like GN's from the standpoint of "x" number of bands from Friday prelims go to finals and "x" number from Saturday go to finals or will be just be top 14 regardless of which day they played?

Then....when the bands draw at finals do they draw bottom 7 and top 7 or is it all 14 draw at one time?

The top 14 is from both days. There is no set number of Finalists that have to come from Friday or Saturday.

When bands check-in at warmup, they will draw a number. That number will determine what "order" they will perform in Finals, should they advance. If you look throughout the concourse during the day, you'll see boards with the bands and what number they drew. Because you draw at check-in, the draw is completely random. For example, it's possible that L.D. Bell would have to perform first in Finals after performing last in Prelims.

So Michael, with that said, wouldn't the Saturday bands have an advantage over the Friday bands from the stand point of judges "saving" points for the Saturday afternoon bands. Certainly a judge wouldn't want to award a 91-92 ish score on Friday, not knowing what Saturday holds, and that coupled with everyones knowledge that there are some major powerhouse bands on Saturday.

Overscoring a band and judges managing their numbers are always a concern. But, BOA adjudicators are highly trained and are evaluated year in and year out.

What I've learned from going to various judging meetings....Give the band what they deserve. Even if that means scoring a band that performed at 9am in the Box 5 range in the 90's. If for some reason you run out of numbers later on and you have to tie, then tie. But, don't dock the band points because you didn't save your numbers.

Good rule of thumb.
