Mike Sloan is the colorguard director at Winston Churchill HS and is a drill designer for various bands across Texas.

Also, Roland Chavez is the percussion director at Ronald Reagan HS.

Wonderful pickup for the Crossmen. Wow. These kids are going to have an outstanding staff to work with.

Go Crossmen!

If Mike Sloan can do to the Crossmen what he did with the Churchill Guard, then they'll be more of a contender than I thought before. The Reagan drumline, while consistent, has never impressed me too much, so I'm not sure what to expect from Chavez. But for the Crossmen in general, this is looking better and better.

Ronald Reagan's drumline (and of course their front ensemble) was fantastic last year!

Just a cool tidbit since we're on the subject of Reagan and percussion...

When Glenn Fugget (DCI Head Percussion judge) judged BOA Grand National Semifinals in 2005, he said on his tape that it was the best high school front ensemble that he had ever seen. That's means a lot coming from a guy like Glenn. Gotta concur with him. Their percussion writing and execution was gorgeous.

Wow I didn't know how amazing Mike Sloan really is. Article from yea.org:

Mr. Michael K. Sloan is starting his 9th year at Winston Churchill High School this fall where he is the Visual Coordinator, Drill designer and Guard Director. He marched the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps from 1981 to 1990. During those years, Mike performed as a member of the Baritone line and was the Phantom Regiment

marched Phantom from 81 to 90? so he marched since he was 12 years old? I'm not buying it, lol.

Mike Sloan marched in the Phantom Regiment Cadets corps during those years as well and then made the jump to the Phantom Regiment in the late 80s.

Crossmen Add to 2007 Brass Staff

Thursday, December 14, 2006

By: Caryn Goebel

Talented Texans to guide hornline

A fresh start in San Antonio, Texas, brings with it new talent to the staff of the 2007 Crossmen.

Corps' Director Mark Chambers has named several new staff members within the brass section, just as the Crossmen prepare for its first full-corps camp and ongoing auditions this weekend.

Rick Villarreal was named Brass Caption Head for the Crossmen. He is currently the Director of Bands at Smithfield Middle School in the Birdville Independent School District. In his 20th year as a music educator, his teaching experience includes positions in the Midland, Lewisville Lubbock and Birdville school districts.

Notable highlights in Villarreal's remarkable career include his position as Director of Bands at Flower Mound Marcus High School where the wind ensemble was a finalist in the TMEA Area Honor Band. The marching band also advanced to the State Marching Contest for the first time in the school's history. Villarreal's marching bands were consistently music caption winners at competitions during his time at The Colony and Marcus high schools.

Villarreal is a graduate of Texas Tech University and continues as a student of Tom Bennett at the University of Houston.

Gabe Musella will lead the mellophone section of the Crossmen. Musella is the Director of Bands at Spring High School in Spring, Texas. With 18-years of teaching under his belt, he is the previous director at Evans Junior High in Lubbock, Randall High School in Amarillo and Lubbock-Cooper High School. Musella's ensembles have been consistently names UIL Sweepstakes and "Best in Class winners. On many occasions they have reached the finals of the Texas State Honor Band competition.

An avid arranger and composer, Musella's work is currently published with RBC Music, TRN, Neil A. Kjos and, most recently, Boosey & Hawkes. He has received commissions from several honor groups including the Texas All State Jazz Ensemble and the ATSSB All-State Band.

Musella is a native of Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended Del Mar Junior College, then earned his Bachelors of Music in Composition and Masters of Music Performance in Conducting from Texas Tech University.

Gary Barnard will instruct the Crossmen contra section. With Barnard comes drum corps experience as he marched with the Colts of Debuque, Iowa, in 2000, then aging out with the Phantom Regiment of Rockford, Ill., in 2004.

Barnard is the Associate Director of Bands at Richland Middle School, in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He has been on the teaching and design staff for the Birdville High School Band since 2002. In that time, the band made Texas 4A State Marching Band finals twice.

A graduate of the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Music degree, Barnard has studied under Philip Clements, David Clemmer, Ed Jones and Diane Lang.

Beth Bronk also joins the Crossmen brass staff. Bronk is an assistant professor; B.M., at the University of Texas at Austin, M.M. at the University of North Texas, and serves as the Director of Bands at Texas Lutheran University.

Bronk studied trumpet with Ray Crisara and, while at the University of North Texas, she was a trumpet teaching fellow. She studied trumpet with Keith Johnson and conducting with Anshel Brusilov. She taught instrumental music in Texas public schools for 18 years and most recently held the position of Director of Bands and music administrator for the New Braunfels Independent School District.

When not teaching and conducting the Texas Lutheran University Band, Brock also performs with the Prince Solms Brass Quintet and freelances in the San Antonio area.
