certainly not whining anymore From what I heard was that it was more economical to have it at Heroes Stadium as they seem to be counting the total of schools going from each region, not by the exact total of all bands, and region 12 had the most. It certainly doesn't seem fair to the bands in region 8 tho. Lucky for Copperas Cove H.S they perform at 6:15pm but not for Harker Heights at 10:15am. -

I was told that the field, being artificial turf, was very hot at The Woodlands and the since the color guard perform barefoot, their feet were being scorched. OUCH!!!! -

After being at The Woodlands BOA yesterday during prelims and almost going blind from the glare....I am most definitely leaning towards indoor venues Very suprised any of my pics came out as well as they did. -
as a band parent, this site has been very informative. Whenever my child has been at a competition that I couldn't attend, such at BOA Houston, I could go to the Live Blog to keep track of what was going on. Even as the host band of BOA San Antonio, we volunteer parents usually have a laptop somewhere plugged in keeping track of what is being commented upon!! Unfortunately, my own child does not view this website but I give her updates from what I have read on this site that I think she may be interested in. I really don't feel that it's my 'place' to state generally what is going on with the band as I don't want to 'step on any toes' and possibly give out information that may be 'confidential' within the band. But if one of the kids do comment, then I might jump in. Please keep up the great work!!

2010 BOA Fall Schedule

Hemet is a further drive for most of the schools competing. Curious why they chose this area. I think this will probably put an hour plus drive for MOST everyone. -

Be prepared for a traffic nightmare....Loop 1604 narrows down to 2 little lanes before you get to Rocket road leading to Judson High School and there is always some type of construction going on at this very large campus (yes, it is split into a "red" and "gray" campus). Parking is an absolute nightmare...the buses and equipment trailers take up all the available parking...I give myself a good hour or more to try and find somewhere to park whenever there is a marching event held there.

I worked both days as an event volunteer...not sure I should state this here but one band did get penalized due to the negative actions of their parent volunteers during prelims. (sorry I don't know which band that was but heard that it was six points) -

Are you going to be sitting in the same area at the dome as last year? I am an event volunteer again this year through the host band and will be practically living at the dome for the next two days. -
at the band parent meeting last Monday, Jeff Vaughn, the principal, said that Albert Lo officially gave his resignation that very day. Of course there was no explanation all, but I can understand that he could not do so...we also were told that the NEISD would now be giving all the high schools $20,000 for their color guard instructor. I have no idea how this is run in other schools but this takes control away from the band parents association and we are no longer to pay our basic band fees to the BPA but now directly to the school. We were really all shell shocked at what is going on....the district has really stepped in and taken control. It all feels as if it truly came out of left field. No one came to us to ask our opinion or our side of any story. Both the district and the school admin said this is it, too bad if you don't like it. I am worried, and so are other parents, that this will make the upcoming programs "safe, cute and very boring"-that Churchill will no longer be competitive. Yes, the kids are upset (and their parents too-we had this thrown at us too with these changes and I am aware of no one asking our input either) but we do want to move on...this should make everyone work hard and to prove that we all can overcome any adversity. I am very proud of our kids, directors, and everyone involved in 'making the band'.

I can't remember at this moment-probably due to all the teriyaki chicken and rice I had for lunch-but wasn't there at least one pic that marched this year ? And yes, the junior varsity was quite large this year, lots of incoming freshies this year. There was no JV the year before. -
pretty much sums up what happened in my daughter's band also. I saw all the other sections' shirts but none for the flutes. Finally on the last week of marching season one girl collected $10 from each person and bought white t-shirts and I loaned/gave tshirt paints, decorations, and such and the girls hand-made their own shirts. I heard that the seniors weren't too happy at first but then was told it was some kind of misunderstanding....whatever.

Hey, what a great idea for a teenager who has "everything". Seriously, what can you do with giant "padded wall" props? -

Last night's band parent meeting was like all the others, except that the principal did say a few words at the very beginning. He stated that he never got a single phone call from any student, parent or any other person in the San Antonio community during the entire marching season. Only a few calls from the Houston area after BOA Houston. He did say that when he arrived at work on Monday morning he had no calls, messages or emails on this subject either. He also said additional words about being a band member in when he was in school, how great our kids are and the band's performance was, etc. After he was finished, the meeting progressed just like any other. We moved on. All I have to say is that I really do not believe that there was truly a "Churchill" band student and her family that was upset by the band's theme. It may have been from another school. If this was the situation, then the paper should've made that clearer. This is the quote from the Express News of San Antonio: -

Yes, that is the one I was talking about. It's really heating up on that message board right now. Big time. Parents who wouldn't ordinarily post on this site or even know about it are certainly speaking out on that one. Especially since there are some really ugly comments about Mike Sloane and Albert Lo. And to some of the people who post on this site also. -
WC show offensive??
kdnblue142 replied to wctuba2010's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Just a thought... If this so-called student was disturbed by the show, why did she continue to perform it? And what parent allow their child to perform in something they felt was disturbing, controversial? And then complain about it later? Wouldn't most people request to be dropped out or something similar? Is this not possible? Wouldn't this person be a detriment to the program and not commit to doing their best? -

Oh **** I finally sat down to read the sunday paper. Well, there's a story on the front page of the metro section. It gives more detail (if you're not in town, you can go online to mysa.com) It states that NAMI did not receive any complaints until after state finals and that Dickey got a complaint from a parent whose daughter is in the band who was upset as well as the family. Really, I am trying to restrain myself....I go to all the band parent meetings. We always have an opportunity to stand up and make any statement or to address any concern that anyone may have. I guess you have to attend a meeting and be involved. I have been to the region, area, and finals for state. I was also at BOA SA both as a volunteer and as a spectator. I have never heard one parent complain about what was being portrayed. There are many involved parents and family members and you see these same people at the meetings, rehearsals, performances. Part of a band's success is the parents behind the scenes, at least that is my opinion. There is a very ugly comment about today's Texas marching bands at the end of the website article. You have to read it to believe it. It's from a football parent who obviously went to Texas A & M since they are the only good marching band in the state. Not my words, his words. What is being said it the most ignorant, expletive, expletive piece of expletive I have ever read. That person is a "d**k". I can't wait to go to tomorrow's band parent meeting. It promises to be very, very interesting. Probably be one of longest one ever. -

Ha, you're right about LD Bell 07. First time I saw this program was BOA San Antonio, at the finals. Myself and other parents were like "what????". We thought it was creepy, did not understand it. Well, when I did find out and watched again several times on youtube, I GOT IT!!!! Duh on me. Yeah, program notes would probably be an excellent idea for us "ignorant" adults. -

kdnblue142 replied to wctuba2010's topic in Everything Music: Marching, Concert, Auditions and more
Interesting, It seems that the adults are reading way too much in this program while the kids seem to understand that it's "all about the music". I am not aware at this time of any of the band parents at WC being bothered by this program. If there was/is, I am sure I will hear about it at tomorrow's monthly band parent meeting. All of the parents I spoke with through out the season were genuinely surprised, my self included, at why anyone would object to the one word "hate". We certainly did not see a problem. It's a genuine word and a real emotion. Are we supposed to hide all negatives from our kids and raise them in a bubble? I worked five years in a lock-down county mental health facility (ER-graveyard shift) in another state,I know what schizophrenia and all the other mental illnesses are. The whole system in this county is very sad and frustrating. But this is not the forum for this subject. But I also would not deny anyone their own opinion as I would not have my own be denied. You either like something or you don't. The judging in all these contests reflect this all the time. But my whole problem to this whole situation is that it feels as if the band is being blind-sided 'after the fact'. To come along a few weeks later after is all over and done, go on a public news outlet, and call a whole band ignorant and insensitive. And what really bothers be is that the band was not given a chance to speak out on it's own behalf. The whole article was very one-sided. What ever happened to fair and balanced and researched reporting? Apparently it's been dead and gone for the sake of ratings. How easy it is to 'attack' a high school marching band. That's insensitive and ignorant. The reporter did not even try to find out what the music and theme were all about. Does anyone know what a "metaphor" is? And duh, of course the show will not be performed again, marching season is DONE. I guess we're supposed to make it a sweet and light program so we're careful not to offend anyone? Give me a break. How boring and unchallenging. These kids don't want it all sweetness and light. I don't speak for all of these kids, but they seem to want challenges and complexities in their programs. Go read some of the other postings. I really get tired of hearing adults continually underestimate the intelligence of teenagers. I hope our kids take this as a learning experience and not be bitter about it.
