Saying this as a Mansfield ISD alum... I'm not necessarily surprised. There are really talented kids and teachers in MISD high schools but they are going up against schools with 1, 2, sometimes 3 (in the case of Coppell) more full time band directors than the Mansfield schools have.
When you have two "wind" directors for 170-200 (or more) wind players it becomes challenging for them to really address individual or section issues, so you rely lots on big picture "ensemble" teaching and hope the kids and leadership team are "self correcting".
I could be way off but these are just my two cents
i was more saying that i was surprised about lake ridge missing finals—their show wasn’t as strong as last year’s, but it was still impressive and felt finals-worthy. also, i feel that mansfield had a far better performance than they did last year, but they placed the exact same. i do agree with you, though, and i’m not discrediting your opinion at all!! just my two cents as well haha

very surprised about the mansfield schools placing as low as they did— and KC not making state!! loved their show so much. very happy for haltom though!

After Summit lost to Burleson High School at the Birdville Marching Festival this last week, I’d say they don’t have a chance at squeezing into top 4. Centennial and Aledo are definitely locked due to the score gap between them and other bands at previous competitions
yeah lol i quoted myself after birdville and said i take it back

i’m very excited for this area as well! i could definitely see summit slipping back into state this year, but aledo is my only lock at the current moment. maybe i need to do a little more research….
yeah i take the summit comment back 😭 still a good show though

ahhh i am feeling so weird right now. my senior year marching season is about to come to an end, and while i’m sad about it, i’m so tired and done with it!! burnout is keeping me from fully enjoying my last moments with this band and it’s so. . does anyone else feel like this? or am i just weird?

how do y’all think the 6a area b ratings are going to play out? do you think 7 bands will be going to state from that area this year ?

I don’t know that Keller’s highest score at HEB since 2019 can be considered a slip…but anyway, I think there’s a good chance that the top 8 from last year is the same this year, with Coppell, Keller, and Waxahachie being the safest locks based on consistency in the past. It’s gonna come down to who can have a clean, full show, especially since it’s a week earlier in the season. Performance time could play a role with how competitive this area is. I’m pulling for Timber, Bell, and Central if 6 advance. But I also really like Carroll’s show. Haven’t seen Duncanville at all.
carroll’s show is SOOOOO GOOOD oh my goodness i love it so much. maybe im just a sucker for pretty shows but it’s very up my alley haha

Right now my locks would be Keller, TC, and Coppell. It's hard to know where to put Duncanville right now, but after Prosper we should have a solid idea of where to put them. Here's what I'm thinking right now:
Top Half (state): Coppell, Keller, TC, Bell, SLC, Waxahachie
Bottom Half: KC, D-Ville, Lake Ridge, Berkner, Lake Highlands, Haltom/Highland park?
it's looking to very much look like area last year, although I don't see James Martin making it, but other than that, and maybe Berkner not making it (they are really good again this year) I don't see it being much different than last year.
imo lake ridge’s show is weaker than it has been in the past few years…they are definitely very skilled and im not saying they’re going to get knocked out of finals but i am keeping that in mind when i make my predictions.
btw, does anyone have a video of haltom’s show? i can’t seem to find one.
i love this time of year lol i love area. very excited to see everyone perform next saturday!

For me, it's Coppell, Waxahachie, and Timber Creek. It was originally Keller, but I did noticed that they started to slip at HEB. I might add Keller back to this after seeing the results of BOA Prosper.
i agree! i would argue that duncanville could slip in there somewhere, but admittedly i haven’t seen their full show this year haha. if it’s anything like the past few years, i could definitely see them being a lock.
i know this is just for finals, but i honestly think finals won’t be as predictable this year. the past two years have shown a common trend in which schools advance to finals, as this is arguably one of the most stacked areas, but i could definitely see a few shocks this season! super excited to see how this plays out.

who are y’all’s locks for state? i know they were said earlier in the thread, but things have definitely changed since then….
-
anyone have full results for this region yet? who all has gone so far? the uil websites are borderline impossible to navigate on my phone, lol.

Arlington Lamar did Area and Waco BOA on the same day last year - I guess Martin isn't going to get outdone.
It's nice to see Mansfield doing well. It's a shame that Mansfield ISD dismantled Summit - I guess they could no longer stomach an Arlington school representing MISD.
just curious, what do you mean by dismantled?
-
i know a lot of people were counting on martin to make finals, but they seem to be having a hard time adjusting this year. (though maybe they’ll pull it together before area!) anyone have any guesses on who could take their place in that finals spot ?
-
idk i think mansfields show is pretty strong this year but i could definitely see martin winning lol. really just depends on the boa thing and if mansfield locks in…they did decent at usbands but i’m wondering if it’s enough. just my two cents though. good luck to everyone competing today!

y’all think it’s gonna be a mansfield sweep again this year? curious to know ur thoughts….

Anyone else see that AMP had to withdraw from finals?? Very sad for them ☹️.
