I'm always hesitant to mention this trend because I don't want to seem like I'm dunking on the programs for this, but I relate a bit to this. I speculate that it's a result of designing mainly for the (adjudication) sheets over the years (even though I'm sure many designers won't fully admit that). If you look at tons of shows from the mid-to-late 2000's to the mid 2010's, in general, you'll hear more cohesive music, more purposeful music selections with theme in mind, fewer section features, section features that fit into the context of the music, and demanding phrases for the full ensemble (sometimes with high velocity drill). That was happening with the old UIL sheets, which i think eventually led to placing a priority on designing for achievement. More and more, it seems to me, that designers are using formulas to maximize achievement and general effect and it has evolved show design to what it is now. I see it in both drum corps and band. I don't hate it, but it's not usually my favorite flavor of show design. Another part of it is that it's a lot to ask 250+ kids to learn hard drill while playing hard music. It's a lot to ask a drill writer to write for a 300+ member ensemble, especially when using the whole field is no longer the meta. And not every program can get students to buy into a super physically demanding show. I'm not sure a show like Spring 1993 will even happen again (As cool as it was, I'm not sure it should happen again), especially not with the 8-hour rule.

Lol it only shows finals, theres a typo for Monday, and it says the contest was held at Freedom Field Stadium. Kind of insane work from the UIL. -

It's definitely a trend and it certainly makes an impact directly and indirectly on a band program. Yes there are programs who succeed despite their Title 1 status (like North Shore, Dawson, Dickinson, and Del Rio for example), but everything from how much time parents are able to put into these programs, to likely having fewer directors at the middle school level, to being not being able to invite clinicians as often or subsidize private lessons for their students, etc.. As a result fewer students tend to stay in band going into high school, the pool of support is smaller, and the quality of instruction suffers, not because the instructors aren't good, but there are likely fewer teachers and they are under-resourced. Their priorities become getting kids to stay in band rather than doing honor band or going to the state marching band contest. It's what comes with local property taxes funding the School districts. The unfortunate reality is not every student gets an equal opportunity in their k-12 education for this reason. It's why supporting the Arts state-wide, supporting football in this state, paying teachers more, and pushing for a lower student to teacher ratio is super important. It is very tough for educators at these schools. Lol sorry for soap-boxing. -

Idk where he got it but I do know that booster club Form 990s are basically public information and you can search them on CauseIQ. I don't really recommend snooping around because it's basically like pocket-watching, but it's somewhat understandable if you're paying the band fees for your child. Usually budget discussions are held during band booster meetings for each program. -

Maybe not a full movement on second thought. I haven't seen North Shore live, recordings look and sound great. I just feel like I can get a better read when you see a group live. They're probably getting 2nd or 3rd at area. -

From what I can tell, they might still add a closer. Hot pink wigs would match the color palette... -

I watched all 6A Region 9 bands minus Oak Ridge. Prediction + some thoughts: The Woodlands: Clear favorite in my opinion. Good amount of detail in their visual content and they execute it super well. Guard is elite. They sound excellent. Tomball Memorial: They could absolutely snag 2nd place at area. North Shore College Park: They sound great and move at a high level, they most likely go to state. Tomball: Yeah, I think they are that good. This area loves its train shows lol. Oak Ridge, Klein Collins, Klein, Magnolia, Klein Oak, Grand Oaks: Each one of these groups were excellent and have a pathway to getting this final state spot. It really depends on who cleans well before area, who has a good run at area, and if anyone has a bad run (God forbid). I'm not going to bother slotting them in an order. (Also, Klein Oak mellos are playing up there! Way to go!) Klein Cain: Great performance today. I think this area is just too competitive. Also lots of notes in that drum book, I'm a fan. -

Complete Staff turnover is pretty rough. I don't know how common turnover like this is in this profession but I know many bands in this area have dealt with some drastic staff changes over the last few years. -

I feel like the top 15 or so groups in this Area have gotten much stronger over the last decade. The achievement is higher every year. And yeah we should pay attention to New Caney. A lot of their music is on the move at brisk tempo and they sound good. Visually very solid from both an individual and ensemble standpoint. If they can't take a state spot this year, they could be poised for one next year. The Woodlands TW College Park GP North Shore Tomball Memorial Grand Oaks Tomball (I BELIEVE WE CAN GET TO 6!!) I think I basically already said this but depth is mounting in this area. Everyone seems to have improved overall slowly but steadily in the recent years. Yeah the top groups have been the CISD schools and North Shore, but this area will probably get way more competitive in the next two seasons. It might turn into the bloodbath that is Area I. -

This area is cool because there are quite a few programs that are "on the come up," which I guess you could say for basically every area in the Houston Area. You've got the Spring ISD programs becoming more solid every year. The Klein ISD schools have also performed well in recent seasons. North Shore is no stranger to making state in this area. Tomball Memorial continues to look good. New Caney, in their first year as a 6A school, could make finals. I wonder what this area will look like in a couple of years. -
