  1. I saw Argyles show at Area... I haven't really seen any others but I would not say Argyle is a shoe-in for the championship. I felt it was a weaker show than in years past and they still have a lot of cleaning to do with the drill. Music was uncharacteristically unbalanced, with horns and trumpets struggling.
  2. Area B 3A predictions anyone? Stacked like 5A (Argyle, Canton, Wills Point, Princeton, etc.), and I believe they are only taking the top 4 this year... one potential state finalist may not even make it out of area.
  3. March, Op 99 by Prokofiev is absolutely the best march I've ever played! Mostly because of the really fun clarinet part I love Spoon River by Grainger. We played it at Midwest Equus by Eric Whitacre, an amazing and chilling piece. I hope I get to play it someday. Three Dances from the Maid of Orleans by Tchaikovsky. I heard Marcus play it at Midwest, it's absolutely brilliant. The horn part is amazing! Nitro by Frank Ticheli
  4. We're learning our drill extraordinarily fast this year. Currently we've already learned through the 2nd movement of our show which is 56 sets. This on its own may not be that impressive, but what's really impressed me is that we've been able to put MUSIC to all 56 sets. This year everyone has been working extremely hard though. My section (clarinets) had sectionals all summer to work on memorizing music, and I know they other sections worked very hard over the summer too. It helps that we got a LOT of freshman, and that they are fast learners this year! I think everyone in our band is just extraordinarily motivated because of State Marching this year! We like to think that we've grown a lot musically since our debut in 3A two years ago. As well as our summer band is going, I do have concerns. One is that I think we may be putting too much emphasis on learning drill and putting music to it. I would like to see more fundamentals work. I'm also concerned about our volume. We're pretty small, even for 3A, and we absolutely do NOT play louder than we can play with a good tone. Of course this means we have to sacrifice loudness in order to achieve a good sound. I hope as the season goes on, we will be able to play both LOUD and in tune
  5. YAY!!!!! I'm so excited! One of my friends texted me earlier in the day and told me we got honor band, bu I didn't want to post until the official results were up. I was in the honor band my freshman year as 2A, and will be in the honor band again as 3A for my senior year! This is SOOO exciting! Congrats to everyone who entered tapes, I know there wasn't a single bad band at the listening today
  6. 1400?! Your freshman class is almost as big as our entire school hahah! I think we have like 550. We're barely 3A, but we've still been able to do pretty well I guess.
  7. terminator, I thought you guys were moving up to 4A? So if you won, you would perform at 3A honor band as a 4A school?
  8. I'm not sure that they submitted a tape for honor band this year. It may just have been a bad year for them concert band wise.
  9. Oh are you playing Holst's First Suite? I LOVE that song! We played it for honor band back when we were 2A my Freshman year. It's really beautiful. You guys have a great band, I'm sure you will sound wonderful at the murchison. Good luck with honor band
  10. What school do you go to Terminator? Have fun with Florentiner March by the way, it's a really fun piece. Argyle HS is playing: March Op. 99 - Forgot his name lol Sarabande and Polka - Malcom Arnold Trittico - Vaclav Nelhybel We're shooting for honor band too. Already have an excellent recording from a contest last month, looking to get an even better one at our spring concert next monday Good luck to everyone else!
  11. I would agree that Hebron has a little work to do, mostly I think in the music aspect of their shows. The tone is not quite there yet. There is much more to marching band than playing loud. With that many players on the field, you don't need to blast to have an impressive sound. I am a HUGE fan of Hebron though. Your show last year, music in every direction, was just AMAZING! I loved the DDR steps! All your shows are extremely creative. Honestly, I think your GE should be right up there with Marcus'. The scoring this year at Birdville was absolute BS. Not trying to degrade Marcus here, they made a flawless show, but were they 10 full points better than Hebron? Absolutely not. I think at most 2 or 3 points. I felt that their was very clean, but not exciting.
  12. Scores are on the UIL site. Straight ones for Queen City, nice!
  13. I'm a 3A guy, and Canton has certainly dominated the past few years. However Argyle moving up to 3A has made things interesting for sure. Placing 5th in their first year at 3A SMC isn't bad at all. Their show was easily the most challenging, marching and playing, it just wasn't as clean as it could have been. They had an extremely good program this year when I saw them at Plano as well, beating many 4/5As. Crystal City is also a great program to watch in 3A. Their sound is phenomenal on the field.
