2012 Area D 5A Marching Contest
ch1k3n123 replied to whodatphi's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
Well someone made the point earlier that going first does have the opportunity of setting a standard, and a quality band like Round Rock definitely would have set a great standard, but with a contest of 34 bands, it's quite difficult to stay in the judge's minds unless the show was absolutely phenomenal, which would have been quite difficult given the temperature conditions. In the cold, winds tend to go flat. Vibes tend to go sharp. Vibes are untuneable, and bassoons go pretty out of whack in the cold as well. Generally tuning issues abounded, but overall the band worked hard to keep in tune. The outcome was certainly a well in tune performance given the conditions, but nowhere near perfect, which would also mean nowhere near having an impression lasting the day of 34 bands which included the likes of Bowie and CTJ, especially when those bands perform in the afternoon. Some kids had the best show of their lives, one saying while he was marching and saw his shadow in front of him, he thought "dang, I look awesome!". The show was definitely the best for most kids, but still wasn't enough to be remembered by the judges and thus lost in the ocean of bands performing that day. I think it was just the luck of the draw, going first on that terribly cold day, but they played the hand they were dealt, and they accepted the results. Certainly their BOA performance will be performed with the highest level of emotional intensity ever produced from a high school band, no doubt! -
2012 Area D 5A Marching Contest

a point to think about is that the judges could each be judging on their own criteria. One could be judging individual marching, the other ensemble marching. One could be judging overall sound and the other nitpicking intonation issues. The problem with this, however, is that each judge has to be very consistent throughout the whole contest. Whether they were or not I don't know, all I can tell is that Bowie was the universal favorite from the judges. -

The inconsistencies in individuals really makes it hard to make a statement like this, but I'm sure once it's drilled into the heads that the show needs to be the best thing that anyone has ever seen to even have a chance at finals, then your statement will be valid. It's just that the shows aren't quite as solid, with many individual mistakes such as missed horns ups, foot timings, etc. Of course this could be said about any school, it's just a race to see which bands clean the fastest. And that of course boils down to each and every kid's willpower to achieve greatness. Plus it's supposed to be pretty cold, hope the early bands aren't hit with massive tuning problems! -

Wish you could've been there as well! Definitely would've given Round Rock a run for their money! It would've been a very tight contest for sure! -

ok jets cooled, I misinterpreted your sentence as you were talking bad at RR but instead you were talking about people talking bad about RR, and I don't like it when people misinterpret RR (as I misinterpreted your sentence) and yeah. Sorry about all that, I get worked up sometimes. -

If I remember right, Hendrickson got 2nd in prelims but dropped to 5th in finals. I can't remember that well, and I can't find an official website with the scores but I think that's how it went. I was very suprised when that happened though. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm confused if they really dropped 3 places or not or if I just have a bad memory. -

I do not understand what you're trying to imply... are you saying that Round Rock is consisted of a bunch of snobby children that aren't mature enough to be able to handle a high position in the contest? Because if so, you are horrendously mistaken. -

I would have to disagree with people saying Round Rock is first for the taking, as Anderson has proved to be a VERY worthy rival in the past 2 years! I am disappointed that Bowie won't be there, though. It's always fun to compete against them! Very fine group! -
So what about if you ask them to do something but they completely ignore you? I'm not a rank leader, but I'm trying to help by telling the freshmen around me to "look left and right at the form around you, and not have your eyes glued forward" and "this is a cover down situation" but they just don't listen to me. Usually they don't even look at me, sometimes if I'm lucky, I'll get a blank stare.

No mellophones, but we've got maybe 20 or so marching french horns? I don't really count them, but we've got a decent amount. (note cracking city over there! haha!)

Hello! Contest season's coming right up, Capitol City is always a big one and a good one to get a grasp on how the bands are doing so far! Anyone got any predictions or expectations?

Hello! I was wondering if there was an appropriate place to post an ad for a marching horn that I'm selling on this forum. I don't see a specific section or topic, but I'm guessing there probably is one, and if so, where is it? Thanks!
