Love the list! I'm still coming up with mine. I'm worried about Weiss since they are the very first band to perform. I hope they don't get lost in the mix because they do have a finals worthy show this year. -

The record isn’t broken, but it’s now a 3 way tie! They do however have the highest placement out of all of them by far! -

UIL 5A State Marching Contest 2023
Karma_Savior replied to Dave609's topic in Past Contests, Events, and Festivals Archive
The biggest thing is that Hendrickson getting first was not unanimous like it has been in the past. It was really close between 1st and 2nd place. If a majority of people have Hendrickson in a high finalist spot, then you also need to have Lake Belton and even Pieper up there as well. Don't be surprised if either: Hendrickson takes a much lower finalist spot than expected or Lake Belton/Pieper make a finalist spot and bump out some dynasty band programs. -

UIL 5a Area B Competition 2023

Do band directors flag videos of their show from being on YouTube, or do people really not post marching band performances? I’ve been dying to watch Lebanon Trail, but can’t find them anywhere! -

They are first/second out by a slim margin. LASA and MacArthur are also on the bubble for Finals 😬 -

I'm looking at the results, and I'm not seeing them beat super competitive bands... If they won a USBands comp where they beat bands that traditionally make Area Finals, I would understand that assessment. You can obliterate everyone at a contest, but was the contest that competitive? Not undermining the accomplishment, just stating the facts. -

I honestly think the show last year was SUPERB! The blue vs. red was visually incredible. I haven't seen McCallum since Cap City, and I know you guys are a lot stronger now. The only thing I'm not 100% sold on this year is the closer. I just think it's a little out of character for the kind of shows you guys normally do. You're performing it very well, it's just not my preference musically. Here's my thought process in regards to placement. US BANDS: Copperas Cove barely beat Hays and McCallum. 6A AREA: Weiss and Hutto beat Copperas Cove. Vista Ridge: Lake Belton beat Hutto and Weiss by an incredibly large margin. I know contests, judging, and performances are all subject to change. Opinions vary and every judge's preference of what they like changes. I also know every band in 5A Area D is working very hard to clean up the messy spots. Aside from Hendrickson, I think placements 2-5 are going to be a complete toss up, but I do believe all the bands I had listed will advance to state. -

Hendrickson Hays/Lake Belton Lake Belton/Hays McCallum Smithson Valley Pieper Comal Canyon Seguin Pflugerville Georgetown Unpopular opinion, but this makes the most sense to me. I’d love some discussions or questions on why, because I’m fully confident on this list! -

Not surprised at all. After last year’s state run, I’ve noticed the district and the community as a whole are backing the band. The kids understand what is needed to succeed at a high level and the directors are working incredibly hard. Unless there are significant director changes, expect this to be the new norm for Gatesville. -

No one is beating Hendrickson. Pieper’s show astounds me because there will be moments of pure GREATNESS, and then they’ll be in a hold for 32 counts with zero visuals. I’m worried that the visual content score will be low. They execute so many things well, but there’s just not a lot of marching taking place in a marching show. I want them to do really well next week, and I’m very curious to see how it’s scored next week. -

I’m surprised Lake Belton isn’t a lock at this point. I looked at their marching festival results and they’ve beaten: Georgetown (5A) Weiss (6A) Brandeis (6A) Sandra Day O’Connor (6A) Taft (6A) Hutto (6A) New Braunfels (6A) -

The goal for prelims is always to assure that the bands that are meant to go to finals, go to finals. Of course, you try your best to rank them appropriately, but judging 20-30 bands back to back is exhausting. Having the the prelims scores count for finals is always a hard pill to swallow, but that’s what happens when the weather comes into play 😔
