Area J is one of those areas where you could say that each of the 23 bands that participate are cracked. It sounds like an overstatement but i really mean it, i feel like every band in this area would go so far if it werent for the fact that these bands had to be ranked.

Though this could ALL change in February, with a potential rezone (which I think is likely, as the fact that every band that advanced to State from J last year made State Finals really highlights how utterly unfair this area is). In theory (and this is my prediction (and hope)), a lot of these bands could be moved back to Area C, restoring a modicum of balance to the whole northeast Dallas situation. I have heard a rumor from a couple of 4A bands that Melissa is thinking of having another contest for smaller bands (4A/3A/2A). Not sure how accurate that is or not. But if I was a 4A/3A there is no way I would go to Melissa any more with the contest the way it is. It's gotten bigger every year and if you are a band that is trying to compete at a high level you want to go to a place where you can get in 2 runs. The odds of a 4A or 3A making Finals at Melissa is slim to none now.

Moe & Gene Johnson. They were 1 year into existence in 2020, with only Soph-Seniors that year. Now they're making UIL State in 6A + multiple Super Regional finals appearances this year.
