Get Ready, Texas - Here Come the Crossmen!

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

By: Caryn Goebel

Registration remains open for audition camp

Ready to be a part of drum corps history? We've gazed into our crystal balls and know this weekend will be one for the books. The Crossmen will hold their first camp in the corps' new home of San Antonio, Texas. And just like everything in the Lone Star State - it's going to be big.

Requests for registration and audition information has been frenzied since the September announcement that the Crossmen were relocating from its long-time home on the East Coast to San Antonio. While interest is racking up, you too can be a part of what many are calling the rebirth of a drum corps legend. There's still time to register for this weekend's Crossmen Experience & Audition Camp to be held at Ronald Reagan High School in San Antonio.

Camp kicks off Friday, Nov. 24 with registration from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by opening remarks and staff introductions from new corps director, Mark Chambers. Then the action all drum corps nuts love kicks in as the newly named caption staff take their sections for rehearsals. The weekend comes to a close Sunday at 1 p.m. after final farewells.

The Crossmen held their first audition camp in Carneys Point, N.J., last weekend with many hopefuls thrilled with the prospect of marching with the corps its first year out of San Antonio.

Tim Pianka, 18, wants to follow his brother Jeff Pianka in marching with his second family fondly known as Bones. Jeff has marched with the Crossmen three years and inspired Tim to pursue the Maltese Cross when the time was right.

It couldn't be more right, Tim Pianka said, during the New Jersey camp.

"I've learned so much. Playing with 70 great brass players right now, it's a good thing," Tim Pianka said. "I'll be back - definately."

Chris Hess is one of more than 20 Crossmen veterans known to be coming back to march with the corps in Texas. The Erial, N.J., resident played mellophone in 2006, his rookie year, and had every intention of continuing his drum corps experience with the corps - no matter where it was based.

"This is going to be a first for the Crossmen. It's a good opportunity to start fresh," Hess said. He admits interest in the corps is huge since its relocation to San Antonio was announced. All the better for the Crossmen, Hess said. More interest means a strong talent base that will, in the end, only benefit the corps.

Don't regret it on Monday. Show up Friday for an incredible weekend in Division I drum corps when the Crossmen make their unforgettable mark in San Antonio. Register now here

Man, the Dec. camp was absolutly AMAZING, it was really cool playing in the brass arch, congrats and gl to all those like me who got another callback!

Did you guys learn any music from the 2007 yet? I can't wait to hear what they have planned for the show.

Congrats on making it to the next round!

Keep your lip in shape and you'll make it all the way.

what moose said is correct, we have an idea of the show, but nothing is firm, and we wont say anything until the staff posts it on dci.org. The sound is incredible, after we stop palying we hear our sound reflecting off buildings (we weree outside) for atleast two beats!!!!! With our amazing texas talent and direction this corp will be in the top 10. We were told all weekend that we sound better at the december camp then they sounded in APRIL(drumline) or MAY(hornline) of last year.

Exactly the same with Capital Regiment 2006. The most talented corps they've ever fielded, with the best staff and design team, and also the lowest placement they've had in a while.

You can't control the judges or the quality of other corps on a given year. Just because a corps is way better than they have been, doesn't mean that other corps won't do the same thing.
