rsb3 Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 I was recently going over some region marching results with a group of friends when one mentioned that a particular region contest had a very large group of upper level bands (4A, 5A) and only one 2A or 3A school. They said that the region schedule placed this small school band smack dab in the middle of all these large schools. Needless to say, this poor band recieved a 2. My question is why would anyone schedule a contest this way if this actually was the case. Although I don't know the specifics, I would like to know if there's any truth to this. I mean, I understand that this band could've actually had a 2 performance.... but in my mind, of course they would after being placed to perform after all of these large schools with prestigious programs since it would be so terribly easy to pick them apart. Why would the UIL schedule any contest in this way? Quote
Xenon Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 It sounds like you are talking about Hitchcock HS in Region 17 that got a 3. They are the only 2A band in an otherwise 4A-5A only region. They almost always get 2's or 3's. The only reason that they would be put in the middle of that pack is if they chose to have a later time due to a scheduling conflict. Quote
trumpetman1288 Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 I like the way they do it down here...it's actually the only UIL organization that I like down here. For both marching and concert contest, you go according to level and class. Say you have a sub-varsity program, those bands go in order of class. Then after all the sub-varsity go, the varsity bands go in order of class. This was the first year we had a sub-varsity (Valley View from Pharr, they just moved from 3A to 4A and it was their first year to compete in marching band) go for a marching contest, so we they went first, and then the only 3A school in our region, Hidalgo, went. Why don't they do that everywhere? Quote
Xenon Posted November 2, 2006 Posted November 2, 2006 Many regions do do that, but each band can also choose to go later as well. Quote
rsb3 Posted November 2, 2006 Author Posted November 2, 2006 So they don't usually get a first division. But it still just kind of bothers me that they'd go in between all of those other bands. In my mind, it'd be good strategy to perform first, then let the 4 and 5A's battle it out for the rest of the day... Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 we have specified time slots in region 19 too, this year we had 5as in the morning and 3a-4a in the afternoon, the year before it was reveresed lol Quote
