Lots of interest among the state 3A directors on this region.    This region will be strongly represented at SMBC.    After a deep dive the following have happened in previous contests on head to head match ups....

Mineola beat Whitesboro (reigning state champion in 3A)

Redwater beat Mineola early season

Atlanta beat Redwater last week

Winnsboro has been highly competitive in this grouping.

Oddly, Queen City seems to be struggling but they have been consistent State Participants.

Commerce is having a strong year.   They were a representative at SMC in region B last year.

I have no predictions.    This is going to be a fiercely competitive region.   And, it would be historic but I would not be surprised to see the Region C advancing bands to all make State Finals.

I would not be surprised if 4 of these bands make top 5 at SMBC. This Area C has been very good over the last 4-5 years that I have been following our band here in redwater.

WoW! What a day that had some great bands in action!!

It was a very hot and humid day with no escape from the sun in the stands.  I think that might have played a part in some parents for a few schools who were very grumpy and said things that I would be ashamed of if I was a band director for my school or an administrator. Yes, it's a very competitive Area and everyone wants their school to win but in the end parents simply cannot wish ill will on other schools for winning. In the end we are there to support children and to help further their musical education.

So after watching all the bands perform, I knew it was going to be a 3 team race to 1st. Atlanta, Redwater and Mineola just were so far and above everything else I saw, each show left an impact. Yes, I did like some parts to Commerce/Winnsboro but I think there is still a gap. The gap for the top 3 is soooooo narrow. I think if you replayed the Area Finals 4-5 times and had new judges for each one you would get several different results with Mineola/Atlanta/Redwater in the Top 3 in some order.

Mineola/Redwater/Atlanta shows were all great and I think Area C is going to have 3 schools bring home a medal this year. Now, it's just a question of which school is going to put in the hard work this week to take them to the top at State next week.

Good luck to all going to state!!

What a day it was!

My wife and I finally had a free Saturday and chance to see everyone's show. I agree with everything you said. The top 3 bands have a razor thin margin of error as we saw prelims go from Atlanta, Redwater and Mineola to in finals Mineola, Redwater and Atlanta.

The SMC is going to be exciting!

Well said. Yes it was super hot out there yesterday. Feels like we go from one extreme weather event to another each year with area performances. QC, Winnsboro, Commerce all had good sound I thought but the energy and design of Redwater, Mineola, and Atlanta were far above anyone there that day. Mineola I thought put together their best performance I had seen of that show in the finals. Redwater had issues with mics not connecting well which made some of the solos/duets not as potent during the show. All in all I will be excited to hopefully see these three bands fight it out in the finals of the state marching contest. I know there are standards in judging but it is a bit subjective as well so it sometimes depends on what judges you get in whether they love your show or not sometimes. I think Area C will be well represented at State this year.

As far as wishing ill will—-that’s really not an example I think a parent would want to present to kids. I find myself critiquing the design or the theme with the music but to wish a kid to do bad on a solo/duet is crazy. All those kids have worked countless hours to put on a few shows. I may not like a school because of a rivalry or such but at end of the day applaud those kids performing-they have put in some work.

just wanted to shout out to all the volunteers that feed, bring water to warm ups, setup props, move props, load props, drive trucks and trailers hours to bring these shows alive. If you haven’t been apart of a band village you don’t know the hard work the kids and parents put into these shows. Thanks to all that dedicate their time to let these kids shine.

hope to see some great performances at State in a week.
