Take one day off and everybody posts show themes 🫠 These are all super cool tho!
The Good, the Bad, and the Galactic: I'm super interested in seeing how this pans out! Is it like a space cowboy theme? Anyways, I know that it's gonna look super cool! (I'm biased though, I love The Planets)
Pipelines: The show banner thingy looks super cool! Does anyone know if Austin is bringing back their guard or will it be dance for an indefinite time?
Alterego: I would die for this show theme! If its about duality or polar opposites or alter egos, I really want to see how this is communicated with the band and gaurd's uniform and choreo.
Feather Brained: I've also had a bird show! The music looks super cool, and it's super colorful! Do y'all have uniforms with feathers, or will it be like feather patterned but not actual feathers? If it's feathers, good luck with the shedding.
Metalmorphosis: Okay Elkins! I really like the idea, or what I've seen from the Insta post y'all have. Looking forwards to seeing y'all at contest!
Kinetic: This theme's got super cool potential, and I love the linear abstract pop neon colors! I already know the uniforms are about to eat that up 😋
Super cool shows all across the board, and I know it's going to be a treat watching everyone perform at Area this year! I'm also looking forwards to seeing all of the uniforms (mainly Alterego and Feather Brained), and I bet any guard choreo will eat up! Good luck everyone

I am a sophomore clarinet player looking to become clarinet section leader for my junior year. For my band in CA, I am required to do a leadership project to benefit the band. This goal of these projects is to develop me as a person and help me become a better leader and make the band better. I need ideas for my project so I can start working on it for my leadership application.
This is probably too late, but you could try to do something such as providing lessons to middle schoolers or new players. I'm a guard girl, but also a harpist, so I know a bit about music. Provide them with some basic warm ups, or host an instrument petting zoo! Maybe even try to help people get into music theory! Another thing could be working on a problem specific to your school. For example, my guard doesn't have any sabre guard that aren't broken, so if I was doing a project, I'd probably fundraise for new sabre guards. You could try this, but for like materials your musicians need! Think providing free reeds for beginning band/freshmen, maybe some valve oil, rags to polish instruments with, etc. Good luck with leadership!

Dawson’s 2025 show is entitled “Ring of Fire”
THAT IS SUCH A COOL IDEA!!!! (pyrotechnics in the show? /j)
Not going to lie, as a Clements kid, I saw that and thought of our 2023 show "Around the Fire" 😆
I hope y'all will have cool uniforms and a great season!

- Is this an advantage? (or conversely how is it not?) ...after all if you never toss you never drop. Or is it not and no one cares?
- If it's an advantage, why would anyone continue to toss anything and risk dropping? Especially if...
- My understanding is that degree of difficulty is not factored?
As a gaurd kid, I'll toss in my 2 cents:
I think it's neither an advantage nor a disadvantage, as UIL doesn't grade gaurd as a separate category. We're lumped under visual ensemble (I think), so we basically just add to the effect of the show. I've heard some people say its "marching BAND" not "marching band and gaurd" or "band and dance team", so I think to some people we just really are like another set of props. For example, in Around the Fire (my schools 2023 show), the gaurd was the fire, and we helped to tie the whole thing together.
As for dance vs gaurd, there are advantages to having a dance team (such as dance having generally better timing, more likely to have kids who have been doing it for a long time, little to no wind interference, better dance technique) and advantages to have a gaurd (clear vision of the show through silks (think of it like a mini picture of the show), more variety in movement on the field, can sometimes highlight musicality more, traditional part of marching band). Personally, I like bands who have both a guard and a dance team, as they get the best of both worlds
Also, sometimes there are dance teams on the field due to little interest in gaurd/not enough members, so some schools may be doing it out of necessity. There are also some schools that can't have a gaurd or a dance team on the field, so it's not really fair if they miss out on points due to their circumstances. As for the continuing to toss with the risk of dropping, I think marching season typically has tosses that are either easy to do (think basics, like a pop toss or a J toss) or slightly harder tosses for more experienced members (think 4-6 for seniors, who are really good at catching those)
Since guard isn't factored as our own section, difficulty can't really be factored into the equation, so it dosen't matter to the judges whether you have a dance team with skirts or a gaurd with sabres; at the end of the day, 99% of the comments will be about music/marching technique, so...
TLDR: No advantage/disadvantage on guard/dance team/lack of them

Maybe in the near future we'll see a change to the judging at the area level. Just this past season the UIL advisory committee approved "in concept" to reconfigure the 5 area judges into brass, woodwind, percussion, visual ensemble, and visual individual. This will hopefully be implemented next year. I think that this will definitely improve the judging(especially for this area lol) at the area level and make it a lot easier on the judges, instead of having them judge all of the music of each band. This is also very similar to the judging panel at the state level, except without the music ensemble & content and design judges. I'm also pretty sure that this change is only for 5A and 6A Area contests.
WOAH! That's a cool idea - I'm assuming that the visual ensemble judge would judge guard & drill?
There are some other cool ideas on this email; I'm hoping they add a guard judge! I feel like that would be fun (maybe thats bc im a guard kid)

Can someone explain to me how the classes work? I made JV at Clements last year (JV doesnt compete in WGI at our school), so I never got the classing/scoring basics explained to me.

Can we take just a minute to focus on all the cool and unique show ideas?
I'm gonna say Sam Rayburn had such a cool idea with the Medusa theme, and I loved how they literally carried the flutist off the field after she "got turned to stone". 🐍
Clear Brook also spinning the band kid inside the prop was so cool!
Tianlong (Idk which school) was so cool! I loved the little dragon bridges, but it would have been SOOO cool to have a dragon head stage for soloists to stand on (that would probably cost a fortune tho
)
I didn't understand Pearland's show (especially the circle things at the end) so can someone enlighten me? From what I figured, it has some sort of Greek theme. In any case, 14 sousaphones is crazy work, and a 50 person guard (maybe 40 or 60, I'm not good at counting) is actually crazy 😮
Loved Cloud 9 from Ridgepoint! Such a cool theme, and the guard members are so nice 🥰
All in all, so many bands getting slept on because they weren't finalists or in the finalist bubble
(not taking the finalists down or saying these bands should've made finals, just want to appreciate all the show ideas!)
Congrats to all the state bands btw! (Loved the slides in Dawson's show!)

Hoping everyone has their best run tomorrow w/ no rain! We all put in hard work so I know the judges will have a really hard time deciding our 10 finalists/5 state qualifiers ♥️
(PS Might wanna bring a change of clothes/socks (or an umbrella) just in case yall do get rained on while performing/watching XD)

Hey! Travis guard member here, I just wanted to know yall's opinon on our show this year?
omg another guard member 🙌
let me say first of all i LOVE the uniforms (yall are the strait laced ones right?)
imo yall have a rlly good show, band & guard looks GIANT on the field & clean (when i saw it back in early october)
all in all, 10/10 show! i think ill get to see yall on the 1st against dulles so if i do ill update this post to add more tidbits

A bigger concern for me are the predicted southeast winds at 15-25 MPH.
Im less worried for the guard kids tossing and more worried for the band kids that will get 360 no scoped by the wind

Thoughts on shadow creek ??
Yall are the dragon show?
If so, I personally find it an absolute JOY to watch. I saw yall at one of the contests my band attended, and I have to say that the sound is amazing (I'm guard, so take my musical opinion with a grain of salt or two). Love the theme btw (so cuteeee) and me and my friend watch it A LOT
10/10 show love it have a slay season ❤️

Gonna be interesting if the rain is bad enough where they have to go with the backup date.
When's the last time that has had to be done for area?
Wait; why would they use a backup date and not just prelims only? /srsq
Is there some prelims bands who will get tied up in the rain?

Hi, I'm from Dulles. Has anyone seen our show this year and have any opinions on it? Unfortunately, we weren't able to attend any non-UIL competitions this year, so it's been quite a rough season for us. We don't have a strong history of making it to finals but I just wanted to hear some outside opinions on our show. Thanks and good luck to all the bands!
I'm a Clements kid, so I haven't seen your show in person yet; however, my cousin marches in your band so I have gotten a few recordings of the show!
I LOVE the Bloombox idea (such a cutesey idea) and yalls soloists are amazingI'm a guard kid, so I'll just talk about them (Sorry I can't offer band opinions, but it sounds nice
)
I like how they add a pop of color to the monochrome band outfits
I especially love the swing flag section & the flower contraption thingy
All in all, an amazing show. I loved watching the videos, and I can't wait to see you at Area!
(Also kudos to your band moms for the creative mums at yalls hoco! Loved the bloombox mums :D) -

I've been really interested in joining Carolina Crown for a while, but I'm a junior in high school so obviously I thought I couldn't join. When I found out that I could still join while in high school I got really excited, then I looked at the price.... I do currently have a job with slow hours due to my own marching season, but I am getting some payment every now and then. I would definitely be willing to pay the audition fee, but I'm not making my parents pay for the actual program because of the thousands of dollars... I may not be looking in the right places but I can't find stuff about how to pay for the corp on either the dci website or the Crown site. I don't know if I'd be able to pay later and just be in debt or what. So with that I have two questions. How does the payment process work? And what would be the best way to be able to pay for it?
I did a bit of research into DCI a while ago; there are a lot of scholarships available (I can send you a link if you still need it) & when I asked a similar question on DCI Planet Forum, I was advised to talk to the Corps directors for more info

This is open to DCI, UIL, BOA, any marching show!
Not who will win or who won - just personal faves.
Personally I LOVEEEEE Spartacus (Phantom Regiment 2008) and Eagle Air [idk the name lol] (Barber's Hill HS 2024).
What are yalls fave shows?
Who ARE you, people?

No qualifications here 😭, just a guard girl sharing how hyped I am for marching band. I know a good amount of musical terms (I paly the harp & arrange music), so I understand what y'all band kids are saying, but I don't really pay attention to music.
