but that brings the question of where’s the foundation for judging? how do you judge a show on the enjoy ability of it and the effect it has on the audience. and if it doesn’t make sense to the idea of the show is that something that should be judged when we’re talking about performers. if the show it’s super clean but it doesn’t fit the theme do points get taken off simply because the design doesn’t compliment the music? if so, the kids can’t control that and I think we should be judging the kids performance and execution of skills rather than how non-performers designed a show.

so basically just music and visual? there’s already judges for those. and for these categories I feel that it is more of a solid judging ground than the GE category. there’s ensemble and individual judges for both so feet in time and completing phrases are things that are already judged and can provide a solid reason for their scores. For GE on the other hand I feel it’s a little bit more opinionated. If you say a band executed better than an other you have to back it up with the music and visual (which we already have a category for) so there’s not really a point in it in my opinion. And if you say I feel like said band executed better because their their show sounded and looked better that’s more opinion based than student production based. GE to me feels like a glorified combined visual and music score but with added things like design which again, the kids can’t control.

then what’s the point in GE if it’s mostly based on cleanliness? If it’s about how well they play while hitting their dots we already have categories for that. If the GE category is about execution that’s basically the same as the subtotal, but just built as its own category. And design is still money based but I see the point you’re making.

I’ve thought the same thing. General effect includes stuff like props and uniforms, basically the feeling you get after seeing a good movie, but in this case after a marching show. And that’s stuff the kids don’t control. That counts towards 60% of their scoring!! You would think a contest would be more focused on the work the kids produce, and not the things money produces. And not that kids don’t control GE, just a HUGE portion of it is produced by money that not all schools can afford to fund.

Performance schedule!

could definitely see lake ridge on top this year. what do you mean that berkner sounds like a concert band this year? haven heard much from them or their show yet this season.

I’m looking very forward to it, surprising yet well deserved results last year so hoping for a good time! The contest section on the Mansfield website has not been updated yet so not much information about performing bands this year yet.😢 I do know by their band calendar that Colleyville, Berkner, Timberview, and midlothian will be participating this year.

super confused about the “d-ville over berkner” lineup in a lot of predictions. berkner seems to finally be bouncing back after covid and last year placed higher than duncan at boa and area. i’d imagine both making state but I see berkner over d-vile and potentially rockwall too

When will performance times be released? Comparing to the time last years were released won’t be a bad idea.
