The point still holds if you're comparing just the music and vis captions and weighting them more similarly to UIL sheets. Lots of overlap in the judging panels at these contests and its likely that at least a couple of judges will be getting their 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) read on at least a group or 2 on monday tay_3den and AWF2014 2 Quote

Alabama beats Georgia beats Texas A&M beats Alabama. So who is top dog? It's all nonsense at some level. Like, there is no meaningful distinction between bands ranked in the same tiers. Clearly a 2021 Hebron is superior to a band scoring 2's at region UIL level, but Hebron is not clearly superior to Flower Mound, and Cinco Ranch is not clearly superior to Langham Creek, nor are the Blue Devils clearly superior to Phantom Regiment. Within tiers, rankings become almost entirely subjective. It's actually worse than college football--at least in college football, you have concrete results you can point to. Victories, points scored, yards run or passed. We are judging and scoring art, which is really kind of ludicrous. Speaking of which, I've had an idea for a show for some time that points to the absurdity of the entire system. Take a "top" band like Flomo and have them do an "evolution" of the life span of a championship band. Their first part is full of missed notes, flubbed set assignments--all very obvious, all pointing to the first years of a school's life. Each part gets progressively better. The second-to-last part is Flomo in all its perfection and glory. And then the last part is diminished again, the inevitable cycle whereby every champion band eventually dies and reverts to being solidly mediocre - at best. Who's got the guts to do that show? lunareclipse18, Brahms Symphony No.3, Trombone_lover17 and 3 others 6 Quote

In all seriousness, a lot can change in a week in terms of cleanliness and music performance. For example, if one band was having really bad stickouts by one person and they told that person to shut up. It would cause an instant increase in their music score. Objectively I think predictions are stupid even though I do them. I think they are fun to do. But as been said a million times before what our predictions are has no actual meaning to the contest. Any member should take anything as not true and just bull crap. Spectator should not take it as results. Nothing set in stone. As we know area I is prone to random fits of craziness. For all we know bridgeland could end up dead last and 2014 Bule Devils could end up being our grand champion. The thing is is none of us are judges, we're just people who enjoy the sport. We don't see the same things that judges see, we don't see the same things that members see, and we all have personal biases and so do the judges. As entertaining as it is to try and predict who will be who our winner it doesn't really matter. What matters is bands going out there and putting the best performance they can on the field. It doesn't matter who wins or not. What matters is you being proud of either the band you're supporting, or the performance you put on. Quote
Popular Post AWF2014 Posted October 23, 2025 Popular Post Posted October 23, 2025 I like the way you think. It seems area I is always a controversial contest because you just never know what the results will be until you see them. As an ex-band parent of a Woods student, I know they traditionally start slower and get stronger, which is likely true of other programs as well. For what it's worth, I'm really excited for Jordan this year. They are very strong and I'm pulling for them to get to state. They are a state-worthy band for sure. And your attitude about this whole process is refreshing and mature. Best of luck to you and your group and to all the others who I hope their best performance run yet! tubapop Posted October 23, 2025 Posted October 23, 2025 I'm pulling hard for Cinco to make it. I feel terrible about them missing out last year, given the circumstances. If I recall, it was some other band's fault (ineligible marcher? can't remember) and that cut the number of bands that could advance, which meant Cinco lost its state spot. Not saying they *deserve* to make it for that reason, but I sure as heck would like them to. AWF2014 and CincoRanchNerd67 2 Quote

Lots of difficulty and very well performed. I just think that it was design “heavy” and not as well balanced when it comes to execution. But again, Peter Warsaw and Fred Vollmar, had them going to state. They know what they’re doing so any cinco student on here just needs to know we are speaking our unqualified thoughts of no value.
