Fortisimo Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Alright, check it out; I just finished a little weekend project; It's entitled D&B Suite Mvt IV: Drum and Bass Odyessy. As you may have guessed, it is of the D&B persuasion. For those of you who are not familiar with this genre, it is a branch of the familiarly called 'techno' label that is a faster, heavier and basically a lot more kick a$$ than any of the other branches. Anyways... just listen and enjoy. D&B Odyessy Quote
thesnareguy Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Techno ........... Drum & Bass<Trance Trance (Especially Uplifting & Progressive) & House are WAY better. "Techno" in my opinion is boring. NN SS NN SS the whole time with little or no melody. Trance is full of it. Listen to Above & Beyond, Smith & Pledger and Super8 and you'll know what i mean. Cool song and effects man. Im also starting to produce. Quote
Fortisimo Posted May 22, 2006 Author Posted May 22, 2006 Naw man, trance is like that, and darkstep/jungle drum&bass is like that, but this is a newer branchcalled 'intelligent D&B"; that, and technical step are both much mroe interesting. Trance is too soft for me I'm afraid. I've never been much for House music really. And thanks; I would suggest that if you are using FL studio to produce that you go out and do some research on third party VSTi instruments like Hypersonic and PSYN and the such. The prepackeged VStis for FL are not exactly top of the line, although you can do ok with them. The Sytrus is the exception to that; it has incredible potential (unfortunately it is also a CPU hog). But anyways, try searching for torrents and stuff for other Vsti's- otherwise they'll clean you out for them. Quote
mnkyman Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 started out way to slow, but picked up the voices were annoying (and most of the time un auidble) until they got the the pan right and pan left part - kinda like a question and answer sounds pretty cool ...just a llittle to techoy for my liking (dont get me wrong i like techno/trance) this was just to hard techno (like snareguy said with the constantly repeating rythms i need to find a copy of fl studios...its blows finale out of the water for midi output and electronic instruments Quote
thesnareguy Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Fortisimo said: Trance is too soft for me I'm afraid. Well, it depends on what kind of trance you listen to. Im a huge fan of progressive and uplifting. I really like emotional and happy songs, but once in a while I'll listen to hard stuff. Hard Trance I mean. ( Not Techno!!!!! ) Still stringy but club-like. Gotta love those Hard Dub Remixes. Current favorite : Love Theme Dusk (Signalrunner's Sunrise Mix) - Signalrunners Quote
Fortisimo Posted May 23, 2006 Author Posted May 23, 2006 Trance by nature is too light for my tastes. There are certain branches that aer considered heavier, but that's only heavier in relation to other trance, which isn't saying much. And it's all considered 'techno', per se; that is, Electronic Music is refered to as techno and it encompasses a plethora of other genres such as house, breakbeat, jungle, D&B, hardcore, trance, IDM, experimental, industrial, and a few others. Although, that's just its connotation as far as I understrand it. There are a few sects who refer to it as a subgenre on its own, but I am under the impression that such ideas are in the minority. And a question about the 'repeating rythms'- this work includes a vast amount of variation in comparison to the vast majority of trance. Perhaps you could provide a sample of something that includes more variation? I mean, D&B Odyessy contains both a 7/8 and 5/8 sections; such assymetrical type meters are (as far as my experience tells me) all but nonexistent in Electronic music (other than perhaps IDM; but its a black sheep of the froup anyways). EDIT: I forgot to mention, if you want rythmic variation, I suggest you check out some IDM, especially Aphex Twin; they have a very interesting style that has atmospheric drum&bass influences, and lots and lots of crazy snare work. Take a look at this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=12...58&q=Aphex+Twin It's their song '4'. It's pretty sweet. Quote
mnkyman Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 ^ahhh - lol i listened to about 30 seconds of that link above..and had to turn it off. its ok rythms and such its just - ahh ...i think im with snare guy - happy uplifthing trance songs - that feature "softer sounding" electronic instruments Quote
Fortisimo Posted May 23, 2006 Author Posted May 23, 2006 Actually those are pretty smooth, and its actually a fairly light-hearted song. I can only imagine what you'd prefer then... Quote
thesnareguy Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 (edited) I give up. Another person lost to hard music. Its just your style. Check out these choons sometime. Pretty nasty stuff...in the good way. Alt+F4 - "Alt+F4" 8 Wonders - "8th Wonder (Alt+F4 Remix)" Smith & Pledger - "Northern Lights (Original Mix)" Sunny Lax - "P.U.M.A." Smith & Pledger - "White (Original Mix)" Pretty awesome stuff. The "Experimental" music video of Aphex Twin is weird. TOO MUCH SNARE!!!! A drum transition is okay but snare licks every other beat is a little too much. I understand that you like a different type of "techno" than me but............ You should listen to better music. Edited May 24, 2006 by thesnareguy Quote
Fortisimo Posted May 25, 2006 Author Posted May 25, 2006 Haha, well perhaps then I should retort that you should listen to more heterosexual musc. The point of the song is to feature incredibly complex snare rythmic patterns as well as develop a smooth, but meanigful melody through a simple sinewave synth. The snare is an integral part of the song. Therefore, saying that it contains too much snare is like saying that the atmosphere contains too much air. I've got a Human Imprint remix of White (I think it's the same song) and it's pretty sweet. Since you know, it's D&B, and therefore it has ballz. And big, bold ones too. You know what else has balls? Progressive Metal. Check out some of the songs on this site from "Liquid Tension Experiment", a colection of four true virtuousos coming together in a blinding flare of heterophonic glory that only progessive metal and 100% pwnage can bring. Without further adue, Liquid Tension Experiment I would suggest you have a listen to Paradigm shift (and listen all the way to the end, for it is the coolest part) and Acid Rain.. oh, and Kindred Spirits. Actually they're all pretty sweet. Keep in mind they are reduced quality samples. And apparently Acid Rain is in mono.... =(. Maybe I'll post the full version later. Anyways, enjoy. Quote
