  1. Says the person from Westlake. The judging is not off in this case. There are tons of errors that can sampled on field level and still not be heard/seen from the Press Box. A student can be completely struggling with his notes but that sound may never carry upstairs.

After a looking into this I found that Hebron, Rouse, Leander and Vandegrift were the only bands that had the opposite be true, their individual scores being higher than their ensemble.

How is that even possible? Shouldn't good individual music scores (such as Leander being 5th place) imply a good Ensemble music score? (Leander ended up in 30th) How could they be that far apart?

  2. I have a question on another rule for UIL and BOA. Can a director or non-student direct/conduct the band while they are marching in competition? I have seen several directors serve as drum major of sorts and conduct from the pit area and wondered what that was about. I know this thread is about area competitions, so am sorry, but the discussion on rules and such brought this to my mind.

Vista Ridge did this at Area D yesterday.

  3. My head is spinning from all of the discussions over what a bubble versus a lock means. Who really cares? Look at how many times its been said that every single band that will be there is a great band. It's obvious that nobody is insulting anybody, it's simply a discussion of the bands that people have heard of because they have made a name for themselves. Bands like Mansfield, Plano East, or Legacy are still in the process of making a name for themselves and therefore will not be discussed as much as Bell,Marcus, or Bowie. That doesn't mean that they aren't as talented, just that not everybody has heard of them.

That being said, who has the best GE this year? I've heard of some unbelievably high scores in that category this year.

Oh no... not GE... the most controversial topic of them all.

  4. ^This

Austin-area and San Antonio schools will always go Friday or EARLY Saturday morning. Though, like Daniel mentioned, there are extenuating circumstances.

Though for some reason, Leander schools get to go in the last two blocks on Saturday. I guess because they are farther north?

Exactly.. for some reason every single Leander ISD school is on saturday this year.

    odd.

  5. If I remember correctly, those bands that are closest to the competition go on Friday as they can go home easily and return to the stadium on time if they are called to Finals-such as the local San Antonio bands and also the sooner you turn in your money and paperwork stating that you want to compete the better your 'pick' of the day that you want. The 'first come-first served' principal.

I was always under the impression that everyone had a random pick.

  6. Hey I just thought i would start an official thread to talk about BOA San Antonio.

Just by glancing at the list and with the knowledge of Bands i know. (I haven't heard of every band on that list) This is kinda how i think it might stack up for those 14 final spots.

    Final "locks":

    Cedar Park

    Bowie

    LD Bell

    Marcus

    Reagan

    Stephen F Austin

    Vandegrift

    Churchill

The "Bubble": ( i think any of these schools have a good shot at finals)

    Anderson H.S., TX

    Brazoswood H.S., TX

    Claudia Taylor Johnson H.S., TX

    Hebron H.S., TX

    Leander H.S., TX

    Mansfield H.S., TX

    McNeil H.S., TX

    Pflugerville H.S., TX

    Round Rock H.S., TX

    Spring H.S., TX

    Stephen F. Austin H.S., TX

The Woodlands College Park H.S., TX

    The Woodlands H.S., TX

    Vista Ridge H.S., TX

    W. Charles Akins H.S., TX

    Westlake H.S., TX

    Opinions?

I'm just gonna throw it in there that I wouldn't consider Reagan a lock.

IMHO the only true locks are:

    Cedar Park

    Bowie

    LD Bell

    Marcus

    Stephen F Austin

    Vandegrift

  7. Is this based on the first post of the thread? IF so, I think SFA should be put in the lock, grand nats finalists and constant finalist for BOA SA, Round Rock, when I saw them at area last year, totally shocked me, I think they can be great this year. Woodlands Id put in the lock too

Yes, it is based on the original post. I was at vista ridge. Westlake and Lake Travis were amazing, definitely getting to that level of prestige that people associate with Vandegrift and CP. Out of the bottom 5 bands, Leander definitely shone through. They sounded great. (the recap proves it) and their show (I think it's called "Russia") this year is very well put together... very BOA-esque. I would not be surprised at all to see them in San Antonio finals. Reagan's show was awesome as usual. They have a little visual cleaning to do in the next three weeks, but they're definitely in good shape to end up in finals once again.

Overall very impressed with the Area D bands this year. Seems like everyone is stepping it up.

  8. Can we PLEASE move on to another topic.....this is so stale! How about a subject about bands that have significantly improved in the past 2-3 years......

Based on what *I* have seen, the "Bubble" bands that I think have the best chances are: (in no particular order)

(Only using reagan as a comparison because they are pretty consistent and this thread assumes them as a lock)

-The Woodlands H.S., TX (always good)

-Leander H.S., TX (Placed 3 points behind Reagan @ vista ridge)

-Westlake H.S., TX (Placed higher than reagan @ vista ridge)

-Stephen F. Austin H.S., TX (always good)

-Anderson H.S., TX (2nd @ cap city? I dont remember)

-Round Rock H.S., TX (Placed higher than reagan @ vista ridge, although lower music scores than expected)

Pflugerville had to pull out of grand nats, which I think is really unfortunate :|

Here are the finals recap from Vista. http://schools.roundrockisd.org/rrhs/band/...alsRecap079.pdf
