If you go to the Texas Band Director FB page you can see the drama with Barbers Hill - I will also say that is not the ONLY issue with the honor band process.. for example the 1C winner and 2nd place do not FEED small schools - yes they might be 1C by the numbers but they feed 5a and 6A programs as "magnet" type schools - I know one of them for sure is a GT academy - I find it a little unfair to true small 1C programs - BUT that is not the kids fault and I am sure they worked hard! My opinion on this has nothing to do with those programs - they are well deserved of the honor - I just personally think there are some thing that need to change to even the playing field for the true 1C programs who feed small schools - otherwise what is the point of the classification system to begin with.

MMMM KKKK I also hold a bachelors and masters in Music and have been teaching quite a while. So basically what you are saying is that once you start music theory somewhere its impossible to transfer? What if you transfer from 4 year to another? I did this by the way and I was fine. Yes I had to work my way back to be able to pass a piano proficiency because I had been out of piano for a long time and I was not that great of a piano player to begin with, but I practiced and worked it out. ALSO my daughter has already decided where she is transferring to and they are accepting all her music classes. In Texas if you receive an Associates all of those credits must transfer. You clearly think you know and that is fine, but I am living it right now with my kid and your information is incorrect.

I am going to have to disagree.. Do your research... Have you heard of Tyler Junior College? Might wanna check that out. Last year my freshman child, who is an all-stater and a music major performed at State Marching Contest, and Midwest not to mention other wonderful experiences. My child is getting a VERY high quality music education. SO yeah... please do not put advice out there to unequivocally say one should NOT do something based on information that you do not have all of. While I do agree there are certainly community colleges out there who do not set students up for success in music education... I can also say the same for some 4 year universities. Better advice is to do your homework and research lots of schools, visit lots of schools, ask trusted people within your music circle, see what kind of scholarships are offered, sit in some rehearsals for the places you want to attend, and really find the place that fits YOU the best. Find out who is graduating from or transferring from these places and ask them about their experience both while there and after? A big part of college is what YOU make it of it. Once you find your place start networking with local directors, try to get some private lessons going or even tech at some local schools. While sitting in class and learning about diminished chords is important... there is more to music education than theory, music history etc.
