takes a glance at the calendar

Oh hey, it's Texas High School Football Time! Thursday kicks off the 2022 football season and 17 straight weeks of action while we wait for the competitive band season to start.

Really interested to see how this season turns out. There are a lot of interesting storylines to follow this year. Does Westlake's dominance continue in 6A even after the retirement of Todd Dodge? Will anyone stop Galena Park North Shore (or do we get Duncanville vs. North Shore title game part four)? How does Highland Park do in 6A? How does Argyle fair moving up to 5A DII? Does Allen continue its free fall? Do we finally get an RGV team into the state semis of any classification this year? There's intrigue across the entire state.

Closer to home, Summit catches a break being one of the biggest teams in 5A DII but got placed in Region II with defending champ South Oak Cliff and Lovejoy, one of which the Jaguars will have to face in the third round of the playoffs. Getting to a third-straight state semifinal game will be challenging, but this team has shocked me (in both good and bad ways) before. So we shall see. Summit faces cross-town "rival" Lake Ridge to open the season Friday.

As for games to keep an eye on this week:

  • Manvel vs. Shadow Creek will be the game on Bally Sports Southwest Friday night in a great match up of state ranked teams.
  • South Oak Cliff vs. Duncanville ought to be a battle despite the difference in school size. We'll get to know a lot about each team after this game is done.
  • Gilmer vs. Tyler Chapel Hill features a state ranked showdown in East Texas.
  • San Antonio Brennan vs. Cibolo Steele closes off a great triple header down in the Alamodome (that game will be streamed online by KSAT).

So, how are you feeling about your team's upcoming season? Excited? Dejected? Don't care?

Here's hoping for a great season for all and no injuries!

Alright, so Argyle is the one that may have a great year in football. They just moved up to 5A and they are already 5-0. Even if its Division 2, that is still very impressive. Melissa, the school I went to is going 3-2, having lost to Argyle and China Spring, and winning against Royse City, Crandall, and Terrell. Their next game is against Mesquite Poteet!
