2019 BOA Grand National Championships

DUUUUUUUDDDDDEEEE THAT WOULD BE SOOOO AWESOME!!! I would so try and get our band director to move our Disney trip to that timeframe so we can do that super on those years. I would do love to compete against TSOPE and others from that region.

Apparently there could be a regional in Orlando at least. That would be such a fun band trip. My HS band went to Disney my Senior year and it was a fantastic trip. We even played on some little stage in the park and then we spent the rest of our time there on the rides. So fun!

We usually go every other spring, and next year is a Disney year. I went last year with the band and it was with out a doubt the best experience of my life. We did a parade through Magic Kingdom and did a performance clinic as well, both were soo much fun. I took over 1000 pictures while I was there lol.

Every band should get a chance to go to Disney at least once every 4 years. :)

Yeah we were pondering that in another forum. The popular consensus is that it could be a new super regional announced near Disney World in Florida. How fun would that be? It would certainly be a big draw!

or additional changes to the format to the Super Regional? last year they used the block 1 and block 2 - maybe they are going to change that format. or finally add semis in San Antonio.

though a SR in Orlando would be pretty awesome as well - and I agree, it could be a huge draw. - but hurricane season runs to November - that could be a huge investment in travel for Texas Bands that could be cancelled a week before due to a storm

I know Hebron had the opportunity but they turned it down because most of the kids thought it was too expensive. Instead they went to a beach here in Texas and still had a great time. I bet now they are saving up for an amazing show for Indy next year.

Im assuming theyd be 1a? If so, I could see them winning the class championship.

Even most 4As are 2A in BOA, there are some that would be in 1A and could be very interesting competition, including North Lamar actually. Argyle would probably be barely 2A, although Canton would easily be in 1A.

As far as who's going as a whole, I don't expect any smaller groups to make the trip though, but I'm interested to see what the "Tex-pocalypse" people are talking about brings!

Didn’t know where to put this and didn’t want to create another topic, so its going here.

I met a kid from Avon today, presumably a snare player. He was really nice and classy. We talked for a little bit about them coming down for the super regional and it was really cool to hear his perspective. Class act, for sure.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the entire schedule was announced next week.

Also, hello.

Hello,

And they are doing this thing where they are releasing part of the schedule kn Facebook every day leading up to midwest, where they will do a special announcement on the 19th. There has been some speculation as to what the announcement is.

This is a very interesting topic.  I think Leander has the formula to challenge for the Eagle next year.  Their guard is phenomenal as was showcased winning that second highest WGI class last year.  Their score was so good they could have challenged for the win at the top level.  Beyond that Leander has shown they can play with Vandy, Hebron, FloMo, CTJ, etc.  Not even counting the 3A captions sweeps they won music in Austin this year, and have won it a time or two before at a regional in the last few years when perhaps they were not expected to.  I think what also helps, although it is silly that it does, is politics.  What is key is this will be the first time that Leander has gone to Grand Nats fairly quickly after a previous trip.  They only went in 1999 and then in 2016.  They are not a mainstay, although I think they will be now.  I just always had this feeling even if they were capable that judging wasn't going to allow 'some Texas band that hadn't been to Indy in 17 years' to do that.  Perhaps I am a little off key here, I just think there is something to it.  They also have the recipe in design, and here is hoping they find just the right mix to bring to Indy next year.  I enjoyed Fourth Dimension in 2016, although if I could be a little critical, I am not ever quite sure it communicated all that it needed to from a GE standpoint.  To me Choral Works in 2015 did this the best.  I loved Polarity, but if I had one critical comment there it would be for lack of delivering much emotion.  To better illustrate my point Vista Ridge really grabbed people's hearts this year with their show.  I don't think it was a GE monster or even overly visually stunning, but it just had this it factor and it was done well and it kind of had that let's get on our feet the last 30 seconds, throw babies on the field reception.  If you notice with Avon and Carmel for some reason their design as it parallels with the music is astonishing.  They are not always even shows that make you go crazy, but I think that is what sets them apart some times.  It is the only thing I can think of really because Texas can play with them and execute with them, but I do think there is this missing variable and it is hard for me to put into words.  Bands should definitely feel that they don't need to be over the top to win.  Just note how Tarpon finished 5th with RP1, etc.

I don't think it hurts by any means, and you want to bring the excitement to Indy, but it very may well be that finding the perfect design, selling that design as it conveys the music, etc. and doing it clean is the magic recipe.  I'd be interested in hearing some more thoughts on this.

The only politics I've seen doesn't involve Texas schools. Even then, there isn't anything close to the politics in Texas with UIL. It's a tradition here.

Ahhh, an alumnus. That’s great. I hope you do make it to Indy next fall. I’m going to take my Leander band alumni kid as well. It was fun as a band parent in 2016, but I am thinking I will enjoy it even more next year with my band kid sitting next to me in LOS.

It's a totally different experience going without kids in competition. I went twice with my daughter competing and once without, and it was much more enjoyable without all the pressure of the outcome. I plan on going again next year just to watch and enjoy.

We will see you there, friend! Now, if they would just hurry up an open the flights for that time period so that I can book it already. ;)

I have been once as a parent, once as a fan and plan to return in 2019 as a parent again - but for my wife and I even as a parent, we are spectators. we do not chaperone for this one and plan our own trip so we can see all of the shows

That’s what we did in 2016 when our daughter was a Senior and Leander went. She flew with the band. We drove and did our own thing. Watched nearly the entire thing, which may have been a bit much to be honest. :D In 2019, my daughter and I will fly up and back which should be far less exhausting!

In 2015 my wife and I went as spectators (she was actually working in Cincinnati at that time, so I flew there and we drove to Indy). In 2017 she was a heavily used volunteer (nurse), while I made sure she was fed and was her gopher during the trip. Was able to see some on Thursday and Friday, and large chunks of Saturday, but not as much as I wanted. We haven't decided yet on 2019, and she is considering helping on the Indy trip since there will be a new volunteer band nurse who won't know the ropes of that trip. Coordinating daily meds, dealing with the injuries during practice, and the waves of illness that sweeps through the 300+ kids is non-stop.

It’s a huge job for sure. I know at least 3 nurses went to GN with Leander in 16, and they were very much needed. It’s nice having so many band moms who happen to be nurses, but it is indeed a heavy workload and I have the utmost respect for those ladies!

I “may” have seen more of your wife those three days than you did- and I admire her work with the kids. We are trying to decide between me chaperoning again, or just going separate from the band. We’ll have a child in both guard and band next year- but the cost for me to chaperone would be as much as the two of us traveling separately from the group... decisions, decisions.

It seems a lot of speculated bands in the hunt for finals outside of the Texas "Big Five" are changing their schedules. Haltom pulled out, Coppell seems to be going to St. Louis instead, and Timber Creek does not have GN listed. It seems Vista Ridge is waiting, and we also know Keller confirmed nonattendance. Round Rock did confirm, and their path back into finals looks better again. It seems that the chance at a record-breaking six in finals is a lot shakier, but still looks very possible.

On the other hand, I'm glad the Texas line up is a bit lighter, as I really, really want Park Vista in finals.

if Coppell has pulled out, it still leaves

Hebron

TWHS

CTJ

Leander

Round Rock

if those earlier confirmations stand - but as we have seen, Coppell was confirmed earlier and now a no go???

still think there may be others that we will not hear about till the schedules come out

should still be a great season -
