But the warmup area at Gupton is brutal with no shade. Actually the spectator stands too, they’re getting blasted by the sun all day. I like that it’s closer for Austin bands, but dang if it isn’t hot as heck.

It's mostly a selfish thing. I live in Austin, so it's infinitely easier than rolling the dice on I-35 traffic on any given day.

The best solution for everyone would be if area was held on "neutral" and centric ground, like a stadium in San Marcos or New Braunfels. Of course, then you'd have to pay to use it a whole day, and it'd be a logistical nightmare.

When San Antonio traffic gets bad, and you're on the school bus, the trip from west side of SA to Converse feels just as bad as the trip to Austin.

having suffered multiple bus/traffic issues over the years, I completely understand the desire to keep travel to a minimum. I’m just saying for the kids’ sake, I’d rather not have contests at Gupton when the weather is hot.

otherwise, selfishly i’d much rather it beer in my backyard than a two or three hour drive away

The weather actually looks quite nice for Saturday. Some scattered showers. But a high of only 81.

More kids ought to be wearing sun screen though (if you're a kid lurking, learn from my mistakes, my insurance won't cover mole removals because it's "cosmetic").

Gupton isn't the only Austin area stadium, and a good chunk of my growing up happened at Gus and Ferris stadiums in San Antonio, so there's a nostalgia factor. It was just a remark mostly made because of how much I hate going down I-35.

i know they hold boa competitions at college university stadiums such as mclane stadium at baylor for both boa and uil as well as bobcat stadium which was recently put into use for the new boa san marcos regional, so sometimes i think about what would happen if boa or uil ever put a competition at dkr memorial stadium at ut austin (totally not speaking on this because im a student at ut austin)

No way! I'm here studying at UT as well. I live a 10 minute walk from that stadium. That would truly be a dream. They'd just need to match it up with an away game, or conversely during the week (which isn't the best idea academics wise).

I believe state used to be held at UT before the Alamodome and Floyd-Casey.

What's your favorite part of UT? For me it's a tie between living close to so many good bands, and getting to visit the LBJ Library (I go at least once a month now). Jogs along speedway are a close third.

i haven't been to lbj library myself yet since i rarely have time during the day to (engineering major lol) but the campus in general is pretty nice. there's one study spot that im gatekeeping that's near the EER its so pretty it doesn't even look like its ut anymore.

also being close to many goods is also pretty fun, i have been to a few of the competitions here like boa austin and region 32/area h uil competitions to support my band as well as other bands in leander isd that i have friends in. im part of the longhorn band myself and the difference between high school band and college band is really something

UT is pretty strict about use of the field these days, I don't know if they want the hassle and risk associated with letting so many various groups use it throughout a day.  It wasn't always that way, when I was in marching band in AISD way back when, we had the AISD Festival of Bands at Memorial Stadium every year, on a weeknight same as most ISDs do now, so it wouldn't interfere with other events the university was holding there.

Anyway, it would be really cool to see a BOA-style marching band competition there.

Good luck in engineering, I graduated UT with my BSEE way back in 1994.  It's been the foundation of my professional career and opened many doors for me, over the years.  Studying is important, but be sure you get out and enjoy college life, and assert your independence, in a great town like Austin.  That's just as important a part of your college education, as anything that happens in the classroom or lab.

I'm in the Master's civil engineering program, but only doing part time so I can work. It's a lot lighter than undergrad, and probably a bit easier to be honest (Professors want to give you A's).

Never joined the band in undergrad. It was too much time commitment, and by sophomore year, I'd already broken my wrist so I couldn't play percussion anymore.

I do recommend you check out the LBJ library though. It's also a museum of 1960s America, and civil rights. They occasionally have guest exhibits. A few months ago it was an awesome exhibit about music in America (from Charles Ives to Rappers Delight). Right now they have a Vietnam exhibit that is incredibly powerful.

Anyway, don't mean to steer this post off topic. I'm sure Area will be lots of fun.

yeah i imagine it'd be a challenge to hold any sort of band competition at dkr whether its boa or uil. it's cool that austin isd used to be able to play in there, it's such a large and nice stadium.

thank you! im in BSECE and im getting my butt kicked but just being at ut and also being in longhorn band make the college experience better

I saw Lake Travis at Region 32 and loved their show. They sound fantastic and will be difficult to keep out of the State slots.

Thank you, we've been working on putting together a bigger group for the first time so we'll see how that shapes out. I saw part of the Brandeis show, and it is a shame they have such a hard shot at making it to state, it really is such a good show, especially with that trombone feature. Sotomayer I'm not as familiar with but I also thought their show sounded good, at least at the drumline competition early in the year, I'd probably say they have a shot at 6th place, any other schools that might place around 6/7th?

I'd consider 6-12th a true tossup since most bands are about as good as each other. If I HAD to choose one, it'd be Del Rio. Maybe Stevens or Taft or Steele.

Brennan, O'Connor, Sotomayor, and Harlan are also all contenders that have done reasonably well this season.

I don't know. It kinda depends on who has a good performance Saturday night. They're all so close to each other in level, an excellent performance could push anyone ahead of everyone.

It’s a program I’ve been waiting to really upswing. I think they have it in them.
