If I had to order them though: 6. Steele 7. Taft 8. Stevens 9. Del Rio 10. Brennan ------ 11. Sotomayor 12. O'Connor It'll be interesting to watch. i think the battle for 4th between lake travis and brandeis is going to be tougher this year, brandeis has had a great year so far Quote

Brandeis has improved a lot since their first area finals appearance 10 years ago. But Lake Travis has also been starting to match the caliber of bands like Dripping Springs and Westlake. Brandeis has been having an amazing season, especially playing with the big names at BOA, and barely missing TMC Finals (I personally had them in finals). Making state would be awesome for San Antonio (since there aren't many bands playing at that high of a level). I can't find many competitions Lake Travis has been at. They may be a wild card in all of this. Maybe they won't be as strong since they won't have as many judges comments to apply. Quote

Probably because of their trip up to Midwest this year. Not a ton of marching band competitions I suppose. Quote

Roasas Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 As a Del Rio Alum, it pains me that Del Rio is lumped in with the top 4 bands in the entire state. The Rio Grande schools should be lumped together as they have consistently less resources than the rich Austin schools. They should get the reward of going to state for their hard work. That's my bias opinion though. I knew they'd never make it again once they were moved to that district. They could easily make state consistently in at least three other areas. Quote

But I get it. The area switch affected NISD (which may have to wait a while to see the state competition again unless Brandeis can pull it off), Judson ISD, and SCUC ISD, many of which would make state if it was all San Antonio area schools against each other and there were 4 or 5 spots. Richer schools tend to pull more students that can afford private lessons, students might not have to work while in school, they may have nicer equipment, etc. You can't deny, however, the growth Del Rio has made as a program. I remember Del Rio got a 2 at region my freshman year. Just last year, Del Rio was 6th in area. A key part in getting better is competing with better bands. Del Rio was competing with valley bands for a while and wasn't seeing much success. I don't think an area switch is the only thing that caused this growth, but I do think it's been a driver for growth. Roasas 1 Quote

They're that confident. I highly doubt that's the reason. Making state is never a guarantee. We don't even know if there will be 4 spots this time around, considering 2 of the region competitions haven't happened yet. I do think if there are 4 spots, it's Lake Travis's to lose. Or they may even rise to 3rd above Westlake. I don't know. There aren't many recent recordings online to judge them. I get you might be doing playful banter, but I don't think it's gonna be as clear cut as you're making it out to be. Quote

FEDude Posted October 21, 2024 Posted October 21, 2024 Oh my, that's an early time for Marshall. I have family in that band, so I'll try and see them. They're doing a Joker show and it's really quite nice. They play Smile and have improved A LOT since last season. Taft is doing a Faberge Russia type theme. They play music from Anastasia and the Barbie Movie (not 100% sure how that one fits into the theme, but it does sound nice). I don't think I have the energy to stay from Marshall to Vandegrift. I'll probably go and watch Marshall in the morning, then come back for finals. Quote
Samuel Culper Posted October 22, 2024 Author Posted October 22, 2024 I've seen a number of posts, this year and prior years, commenting on the fact that Area H and Area D both combine Austin and San Antonio schools. The lament is that this seems to limit opportunities for San Antonio Schools (outside of RR and CTJ, primarily) to advance to State. I get the frustration, but I do think the TMEA sets things up this way to keep a competitive and a numbers balance to the State contest. As a thought exercise, I wanted to take a look at what a more "Austin centric" grouping of Regions would look like for 6A. So, I'll create a new Area Z contest that encompasses Regions 18, 26 and 32. These regions cover all of the Austin metro and immediate surroundings. This list of 6A schools in those Regions looks like this: Sixteen total schools, so there would be only three State spots available, at most. Look closely at that list and imagine only three of them at State. So, maybe we broaden the geography a bit and add in Region 8 - the only other region really adjacent and not impinging on another large metro: This gets us seven more 6A schools for a total of 23. So, we have only added a 4th State spot. Finals for Area Z would be a high-stakes bloodbath, with multiple State Finals quality bands left behind. Big-time oof. gregorydf01 and lost 2 Quote
seafoodbuffet Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 What does your thought exercise say about effects on San antonio schools’ advancement? I’m guessing a number of school that doesn’t normally appear at state world start appearing at state. This is the problem with any division of state slots, there’s going to be winners and losers in this because it is literally a zero sum game. You can only crack or pack districts, benefiting some while hurting others. I don’t know what the solution for this is but we’ve got what we’ve got.. Quote
